Signs of the Indus Script and their variants

Dr. Asko Parpola takes an in-depth look at the recent claims of other researchers like Bryan K. Wells and Andreas Fuls that the Indus script has upward of 700 different signs. Despite the "wealth of new information" contained in the sign sets made by these researchers, Dr. Parpola argues quite coherently that the researchers are mistaking variants of single signs, and suffers from the "false conflation of two graphemes into one." He offers his own criteria of how to spot true variants (allographs) of a grapheme, and in general notes that we should expect signs to undergo changes if not transformations during a 700 year period. This is a technical discussion, but very important in terms of framing recent work and helps to anchor Parpola and Mahadevan's more modest sign lists (around 400) as a better foundation for research and decipherment. Dr. Parpola is the recognized authority on the Indus script, with important books and research covering many decades.

Thanks for posting this. I realise it is a bizarre yet very important subject discussing the characters of a script we can’t even be certain is a script let alone what the characters mean. So the lists and attempts at classification of those characters is certainly the best groundwork for any further study of this writing system. Having said this and with all due respect, it also appears a little futile to argue over whether some character variants can be counted as distinct characters-presumably having a different meaning-or not if we do not even have the faintest idea what kind of representational value to expect. Like in the Maya script or early Chinese writing, without insight into the concept of what graphic characters are to express, language, grammar, phonetics, people, guild emblems, items in accounting etc, the degree and quality of calligraphic diversification cannot possibly be guessed.

The Indus Valley was known to the Mesopotamians as ''Meluha' or 'Mel loka' Meaning 'top or upper world' in most south Indian languages.

The Indus Valley Civilization flourished from 2600bc onwards and then disappeared in 1900bcwithout apparent reason . It must be noted that in 2000bc the volatile and barbaric Horse riding warriors of the Andronovo/Sintashta/Steppe Culture were active in the area. Faced with the threat of imminent invasion the IVC inhabitants chose systematic and strategic evacuation of the Valley. Followed by migration east and South with family and wealth. Eventually, mixing with native hunter gatherers to become the ASI. In the mean while the Indus Valley lay abandoned until European and Central Asian pastorolist migrated into the area bringing new language, religion and the Vedic Culture Other male biased groups settled the indo gangetic plains giving origins to the ANI.

The IVC lay vacant for 400 years from 1900bc to 1500bc when settlers arrived.

interesting bull fight.. scissors facing each other.. long ;ong ago I took it as muruga crying or baby crying.. but Kangali has taken it as scissors.. as we have in Sumerian the sign frequencies plotted against times/periods used would give us additional input as with time, how signs transformed that with place as well should be grouped.. in one of my paper I postulated that Kangali reading represents earlier days and Mathivan reading to later periods.. as I approach Indus from Sumerian as both having treated as speaking ancient form of Tamil but about the same period though suing different pictograms, infact were using same primary education methods what we are taught...

The IRULA tribes of the Nilgari Hills in tamil nadu are believed to be the closest descendants of the Indus Valley inhabitants .

Our research shows that the Sumerian pictograms form the ancestors of the Indus Valley Script signs: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dClYybZLF4o.html In agreement with Asko Parpola, this also suggests that there cannot be 700 different signs.

Dr. Parpola, this question has probably been asked earlier but why aren't the min signs read as dates or perhaps some equivalent temporal term. The words relating to stars (technically planets but sangam lit refers to them as star like bodies in the sky) that are still present in tamil denote to days of the week right (like thingal (sun), sevvai (mars) bhudhan viyazhan velli (venus) sani (saturn) naayiru (sun again) - so why couldn't they have served the same purpose in the seals. As in to denote the day in which the trade took place (say i send buckets of fish on tuesday, I might write that down in the token to keep record of the transaction). Ofc I do not have any background in linguistics so this might be a dumb question.

Pl. visit the descendants of Indus Valley people still living following their traditional customs traditions and practices. This was my personal research many years Pi. Wait for my booklet that will explain the final solution in deciphering the scrips.

Need not unnecessarily arguing and implying. You can find the descendants of the highly cultured Indus Valley people who had settled there for making convenient trading with the western countries like Sumeria migrated due to some valid reasons. They returned homeland Tamilnadu. After a tedious journey they reached eastern seaport KAVERI PUHUM PATTINAM and continued their traditional trading with the eastern countries.

When after many many years the seaport threatened by natural disaster, they travelled further south and settled in a place away from sea and flooding rivers. Visit the place which is now called CHETTINADU and the people called NAGARATHHAR meaning people who live non cities. You can find Indus Valley traditions and practices still in practice.
