Silicon Valley: Season 4 Episode 3 - Intellectual Property / Guest Lecturer

No character in Silicon Valley better embodies our tendency to mistake luck for skill than Nelson Bighetti, Jr., the mediocre coder and Chauncey Gardiner type who continues to breeze through the Valley without a trace of real accomplishment, or even a general awareness of his surroundings. After leading Hooli’s experimental labs and pioneering some sort of potato cannon (a Season 2 sendup of Google’s loony “moonshot” division), then blowing through $20 million and producing nothing as a hobbyist VC, he now passes on wisdom to the next generation as a guest lecturer in Stanford’s computer science department.
The story of how he got to the head of the class is probably the funniest part of Big Head’s arc so far. Under pressure from his father to “get a job or go back to school or something,” he applies to Stanford and is rejected… until the admissions officer realizes that he is the Nelson Bighetti, a famous person who was present near memorable things that have happened in the Valley. “You were on the cover of Wired magazine!” “Yeah,” he says, "and inside, too!” He’s offered what he thinks is a spot in the program as a student - “I asked if there’d be homework and they’re, like, 'if you want’…” -and doesn’t realize he’s the teacher until the first day of class. (HBO’s marketing department absolutely must turn this into a Massive Open Online Course, or, MOOC, by the way.)

@@JITCompilation everything doesn't necessarily has a hidden wisdom behind it. Sometimes things are said just for the Shits ans giggles. Here for example "Failure is ladder" is play on the popular phrase " Chaos is a ladder" since the character of Big head is shown to always be the winner , purely out of dumb luck. So while I agree that you must learn from your failures but in this particular case the character doesn't learn anything therefore your statement is invalid for the given sinario

@@epanecka Yeah, you’re lying. This never happens in real life. Higher education and academic institutions have employment standards established by laws and statues they must abide by. Most lecturers at universities have a bare minimus qualification of a postgraduate degree, let alone a bachelors. It does not matter wether you achieve exceptional success outside of academia, you still need to show proper qualifications that satisfy the legal requirements for employment at a university. Not only that, but official statistics show that the number of people qualified to be professors far outnumbers the availability of professor job openings, which means that the job market is extremely competitive. Even if you do all the steps above, the chances of your actually becoming a college professor are slim. This is of course considering that you are actually qualified and satisfy the legal requirements. In this particular case, it isn’t just any university, it’s Stanford, which is one of the most prestigious academic institutions on earth known for having a sizeable faculty of Nobel prize winning academics and highly distinguished researchers in their respective fields. Therefore, having delineated the probabilities of how likely you’re to be employed as a professor, there’s basically ZERO chance. You are lying. Be aware of being fact-checked next time before you post lies.

That Stanford admissions officer epitomizes many HR Recruiters in corporations. Only able to read what's under their noses on paper but unable to dig beneath the surface to identify the true worth of candidates.
@lucarossi8442

Being able to assess if a candidate is truly worthy or not requires mind reading and future telling abilities. Do not get me wrong, it always happens to me to be underestimated by recruiters (I have an inresistible urge to always tell the truth and I am unable to "sell" myself) but at the same time I think that it's almost impossible to asses what a person really knows and how she will perform thanks to a twenty minute Q &A.

Because he was hired by Hooli to get them the Pied Piper code, and then when he proved to not know anything about middle-out compression he was promoted within Hooli to a useless position, then when Gavin sued Richard Bighead was promoted meteorically within Hooli to give the illusion of talent to make a plausible case that Bighead was really the skilled one, the one responsible for Pied Piper. Then when that failed he was given a 20 million dollar severance package to leave Hooli and never tell anyone what went on. Then he lost the 20 million because Ehrlich scammed him out of it. The funny thing is that if Gavin had just had HR tell Bighead not to say anything then he probably would have done so for free.

Have not watched the show, but he appears to be outright foolish in the clips I see. The comment "and inside it too!" implies that he didn't realize that magazine covers usually reference an article they contain. "A lot of those classes were at 11" also implies that he's supremely lazy since 11AM classes are usually the latest a college student can expect to be reporting to school.
