TSB for GM 1500 suspension noise of clunking or squeeking when turning or going over off camber terrain. I walk you over TSB process as well as other non OEM solutions. Usually the culprit is the druver side leaf spring.
Dude Thanks! My lifted 2017 Silverado leaf springs were making a clunking noise at slow speeds. Installed 1/4 inch thick rubber pieces between the springs at each end. No Noise at all!! You rock!
Did you get it fixed. My 22 sierra is doing this now. They replaced rear pads thinking it was brakes but it's still doing it and you can feel the vibration in the leaf spring when I shake the truck side to side.
@clubtc05 I'd get it looked at asap. Mine has it and I checked torque on u bolts and they are WAY undertorqued. I've parked it till my appointment next week.
I ended up figuring it out. Had it at the dealer 5 times they couldn’t fix it. If you google (spring things ) that is your solution. Little rubber pads. Pry the springs apart and put them on top of the factory rubbers in there. Put one in all four contact points. (Two on each side of truck) I used a 2’ pry bar to spread springs and put them between. Installed them a month ago hasn’t made a peep.
I ordered them immediately. I probably could have gcut a piece out of an old tractor trailer mudflap but I'll gladly support SpringThing. Shame GMC can't just fix it...
Easily found the Spring Thing and video's ... Just so happen to have some rubber belting and ties that I cut to size .... Will install 2/29 ....And report on how it works .... Thanks ...
My 22 Sierra does this. They replace pads because it did it while braking commonly. Just realised today i can shake the truck side to side in the rear and here the noise without even driving it. Can easily feel the vibration of the noise in the leaf spring. I hate that i traded my ram for this thing tbh. Spends more time at the dealer than anything else 🤦♂️
Mine was fixed when they replaced the leaf springs. Shaking the truck from side to side is not always a good test because what you could be hearing is the axle sliding back and forth in the differential housings, and that is completely normal. It will sound like it's coming from the same area. You would have to make sure what you are hearing is not that.
@automotiveandmore you can feel the strong vibration in the leaf springs themselves and it only does it on the drivers side. Also checked u bolts and they are very loose. Set to the initial 60ft/lb spec and nuts started turning before it even reached that. Also the axle movement would be a clunk. This is more of a rubbing sound and does it while turning or braking on angles.
@MrDutch1e that definitely sounds like a leaf spring issue. Mine only did the noise when the truck was flixing in an off camber driveway or similar. Your sounds like it's worse than mine. Tightening the ubolts or replacing the pads did no difference for me, unfortunately. Only when they replaced the whole leaf spring assembly was the issue gone. I have heard of others having issues on their second leaf spring as well, which is disappointing.
For me i replaced my leaf spring and still clunks i had 2 inch drop shackles installed and after that my passenger side leaf spring keeps getting squished i thought maybe it was worn but even the new one is squished like where that rubber circle is it is making contact at all times
Yours a 22? Dam that truck should not have issues yet. My 18 has clunking noise in front, I could not find issue until I purchased the listening ears or whatever they are called. Then I traced it to the top bolt of the shock/strut assembly. I don't know if it's just the rubber part in there wore out or what so I guess it has 40 miles so I guess I will change out whole shock strut assembly.
I think I have the same problem on my 2021 duramax. I have that clunking sound and reared sways if I move the wheel right and left while I am moving. Did you have that same symptoms
A lot of things are involved in that desicion. But to make it short, it's 2 main things, price and complexity. Id probably expect the nect generation of GM half tons to be equipped with coils so they can still be competitive.
If you are under warranty they should absolutely fix it. Make sure to let them know there is a TSB on the fix for it. Either the same dealer or another ine should give you the same result. If they dont want too id escalate it.
YEP. "Normal". Sounds like the truck is going to fall apart when I take it off the roadway. I have a '22 Sierra 1500 3.0 Duramax. They retorqued the u-bolts... no change... They replaced springs on both sides, -great! -for about 8k miles I had no clunking.... I hit a pothole on the interstate, and now? Its back... clunk clunk!! Back to the dealer. They opened up whats called a "TAC" case, where the dealership technician submits data to the manufacturer for advice. GMC says "normal", so, no warranty repair needed. I guess our only option for a recall on these things is to start blowing up the phones at GMC.
