Excellent race at the Silverstone Classic with 70's Roadsports. Racing in the HSCC (Historic Sports Car Club) 70s Roadsports at the Silverstone GP Circuit with a Triumph Spitfire 1500. Historic Classic Car racing at its best!
That was fantastic. Just bought a ‘79 1500. Fairly rusty but good frame. I want to try at least to auto cross it and if possible race it. God knows. Lord bless you and your driving skills 🏎
My old neighbor fitted a forged TR6 engine and box into a spit 11 years back, plus load of other upgrades, brakes, suspension etc. It was immaculate, he offered to sell me it for £8000, I didn't buy at the time, I have regretted ever since.
Wow yeah! That would of been amazing to drive. The TR6 engine is great. My dad was going to buy one brand new and his mum said it was a stupid thing to do and he didn’t. He regretted that to this day!
Mark Alexander thanks. Not the smoothest drive but the only way to keep up with this lot is to throw it into corners to carry as much speed as possible down the long straights!
Are you running the stock swing arm rear suspension or a modified double wishbone or something else? I want to build a race car but I’m kind of scared of the stock rear suspension
We’re not allowed to modify the suspension. It’s a lowered rear spring with standard hubs. The main things to upgrade is the rear drive shafts. They also act as the suspension lower arm to take a huge amount of stress. I’ve ripped 2 wheels off at the back with drive shafts snapping. Either make them out of a harder material or if using standard ones, swap them every few races
That looked good fun, great drive. I'm actually turning my own spitfire into a race car, struggling to find an off the shelf cage for it. What cage is in yours?
Are you running a swing spring on the rear end of this? Edit - just saw that it looks like a 1500, so the answer is probably yes. Fairly active at the rear with weight transfer to the front in a corner.
@@Tomkitek thanks for your reply. Great to see how fun this is as we're building a Triumph based car/swing spring rear. Do you have a build thread on a forum somewhere?
Neil Rosh I don’t have a build thread unfortunately. It’s just been steadily improved on over the years. I’ve actually just sold it to help fund the completion of my latest TVR Vixen race build. Really sad to see it go
Jez Clark yeah was a shame to fluff the gear change at the last moment. Poor car was ragged to an inch of its life down the straights. Big red light is oil pressure warning under 20psi. it runs really good oil pressure around 70psi but when off throttle it drops heavily for a moment. A trait of a spitfire engine.....
would love to know what performance mods the car has. Cant hardly believe the pace of the car....that lardy Porsche wasnt able to get away! Gripping stuff, loved watching and I bet the neighbours could here me screaming!
Hi Paul. To be honest the car is fairly standard. Our regulations are very strict so its standard SU carbs etc. The engine has been balanced and a lot of head work but we cant even use roller rockers. Engine is around 115bhp at the flywheel. Brakes and suspension are standard apart from AVO shocks.
