Thank you so much for this review. I was thinking about the fractal design. But the fact it was not hot swappable was a problem. This looks like what I need in my first NAS build.

Wow... that's impressive. I know the tiny cubes tend to dominate the NAS circuit, it's nice to see a "Full Size" case for folks that don't have space constraints. I'm thinking a couple sheets of sound dampening material on the inside (a la Fractal Design) would help some as well as some quiet (Noctua) fans in place of the factory ones if you gonna put this puppy under your desk.

I'm really considering it just for nostalgia and budget reasons. It reminds me a lot of the file servers I used to work with back when I had an IT job, and it gives me room to expand in the future. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the cube form factor cases, but I have trouble justifying the mITX/SFF "tax". I get an eye twitch every time I see a PSU that has a 300% markup over its ATX peers because it is in the SFF or Flex form factor.

Hi, I'd love for you to look at the SilverStone CS351 NAS case. It's by no means a brand new case from them, but it has an interesting form factor and supports an immense amount of storage for its size - 5x3.5" hotswap, 2x3.5" internal and 7x2.5" internal all at the same time! To top it off, it supports an M-ATX motherboard so it actually has the space for the PCI-E cards you're gonna need to populate all those drive slots. It's a very strong contender for my next server hardware upgrade.

I would have liked to have had this as an option when I was building out a storage PC for my dad. IMO, the M-ATX form factor is perfect for a compact home server where you can have 2 slots of PCIE for expansion (x16 for SAS HBA + x4 for a 10GbE NIC). The price tag they hold for these cases though.... My main gripe with the predecessor (DS380) was the price premium for an ITX mobo (not to mention the interference of the drive cage with certain expansion cards.) They've gone down a real slippery slope charging the same premium price tags of yesteryears without delivering the same premium quality. I remember when Silverstone was founded in the early days by the old engineers from Coolermaster's ATCS division and were producing very high quality aluminium cases that justified the prices (the early days Fortress/ Temjin with thick aluminium unibody frames).

Exactly, used to own FT02 and I love it because of premium material and its innovative features at that time. Silverstone has lost its touch for a long time, no longer a premium case maker, no innovation.

Great video! I have a question about the lower fan on the drive cage; it seems very close to the power supply (so close that the distance between the fan and PSU would render the fan unable to do its job properly). Is this a valid concern or am I just worrying about nothing?

So...yeah. I do have space constraints (24" W x 22" D x 10" H)...but still want a decent sized chassis for my first home server/nas build that will support a full sized micro ATX board and full height PCIE cards. This is why I am considering this chassis, but laying it on its side. Thinking about modifying it for feet that will lift it about 1/2" off the shelf while on its side.

I would say that the ventilation of the discs is the same faulty design as in the CS351. The fans are mostly covered and there is less flow for the upper and lower discs. When fully loaded and working hard, the discs heat each other up. I have changed a lot of things in the CS351. Weak performance for this price.

I bought the Silverstone CS351 for 230 Euro and I am not so happy with it. Very thin metal and cheap plastic and when you remove the front cover the buttons and LEDs are fixed with hot glue. Don’t want to see this in that prize range.

overall fairly uninteresting case layout/design to be honest, I just realized an old Fractal Design Define R5 becomes rather competitive NAS case, with 8x HDD bays, 2x 5.25 bays, some 2.5 SSD mounts, standard ATX mobo support, more efficient cooling airflow and noise dampening included... would be really interesting if Fractal Design stepped up into NAS case game next year :D

I've literally just bought one of these and received it yesterday! Aiming to downsize from my massive Fractal Design case (that doesn't have any hot-swap bays) to something more manageable. Looking forward to swapping things over and adding some Noctua fans and possibly an Icy Dock 2.5" multiple SSD hot-swap caddy. 👍

Just out of curiosity, what's the main benefit of a hot swappable bay when hds generally don't need to be managed for a long period of time. I have a fractal design r4 and it doesn't have hot swap but I don't think I've needed it, but not sure if I'm missing out on something.

@@basdfgwe For me, it's the convenience of not needing to power off my NAS/unRAID Server when adding or replacing a disk. I previously had a HP Gen8 MicroServer that had hot-swap and I used that feature to upgrade from 4*2TB to 4*4TB then 4*8TB - all without downtime by ejecting each disk one by one, allowing each disk to rebuild then repeating the process until all disks were larger then finally expanding the array. Hot-swap is probably more a nice to have than an essential feature for home use.

I wish the vented panel under the 5.25 bay was optional. It looks like to me that they could have just as easily made it removable, as they've improved the 8 hotswap cages below enough that airflow is unlikely to be an issue. If they had done that, I could have slotted in 2 or 3 more hotswappable 3.5 HDDs through the two 5.25 bays.

In general i Like it. It they made it haev 4x 2.5inch instead of the optical drive bay it woudld be the perfect case. or make that section a module. I currently use a 20BAY and could shrink down to this easily. Looks like its out of stock here in AU where i am but comming in a few days

Curses. I was set on ordering the Jonsbo N3, but this would fit my needs more for having a NAS with a home theater streaming. That 5.25” bay for a bluray drive to rip movies, the 8 bays with sleds that the N3 does not have, and a M-ATX mobo for more than one PCI-E slot. Now to wait on the price and hope it’s no more than $200 USD.

Interesting but it looks very hard to fit a custom loop in there. If it had, say, 50mm clearance at the top, it would be almost perfect. They could even add another 5.25" bay.

I really think they missed an opportunity here by not making the case have drives all the way to the top and supporting ATX and E-ATX (Threadripper) motherboards. If you are going to make the case wider than a standard case you might as well do it to provide a no compromises product.

It is strange considdered the already rather large size of casing that they havn't designed it a bit wider so it could support a normal ATX mobo. other than hosting cabled brackets that connects to a smaller perifery connector somewhere on the mobo, there is like no Micro ATX boards that actually supports 5 onboard pci-e expamsion slots. There simply isn't space on them for placing them. It's like they have taken a standard ATX backplane design and just thrown the hard disk bays onto it and noone bothered to think how usefull it would have been if the case actually could fit a standard ATX mobo

Silverstone is considered a wee bit like CostCo, often quite affordable but never really that premium. Although one could argue what is premium? This case indeed looks very promising. The MB size (Micro-ATX) is, in my view, a bit of a limitation but can be overcome to a certain extend. Although one does have to keep in mind that the maximum height of the CPU cooler is 168mm. What I don't understand is why they opted for an ATX powersupply instead of a SFX powersupply instead? That way they would have more room for a bigger MB perhaps? And lastly, I do wonder how much of the drive-bay LED's would be visible with the front-door locked? In all it is indeed an improvement on the previous model and seems to have excellent cooling capabilities (they even mention radiators are possible) If I would go for a DIY, this would be one of the cases that would be top on my list. Once available in the EU...

I actually said I'd ordered the Jonsbo N3 after watching the review. However I canceled that order and ordered this case. Here in Spain needless to say it gets hot, and it's also quite dusty with ceramic floors. So thermals and easy cleaning are really important. Sadly doesn't arrive from Amazon until 21st April, but hey ho... that's quicker than the Jonsbo... FYI price is 225€ delivered

I thought I was the only one that was looking at the N3 and this case. I'm doing an 8 drive Unraid build. I love this case for airflow but I'm afraid my wife will think it's too big. I know she'll be fine with the N3, but I worry about temps for 8 drives. So I keep going back and forth between this and the N3. Hope you enjoy your case when it comes.

@@MichaelDeHaven well, moved my motherboard and drives off the old Fractal Design R3 ... and, now I'm in the process of removing everything out of the CS382, back to the R3... The drives run over 10ºC hotter than in the R3, the fans are noisy as hell and can't be controlled. Very sad, but this is the facts, at least for me. So, I do like the case, and I'm sure for some it would be ideal, but I live in Spain, it's dusty and hot, and I can't escape that. My R3 has 3 x Arctic P12 Max's in, two are for the drives, and one for the system fan at the rear, and it is way way cooler and quieter. The wife commented on the noise of the CS382, and to be fair she's right, but I personally could live with it. It''s sat under our desks in our home office, but the thermals vs the R3 is the killer for me. I can control the P12's via the motherboard, and tuned them to the right balance of cooling and noise. That ain't happening with the CS382. I'm 100% sure for many people they'd be fine, but I'm running 8 x 10TB WD GOLD's and these get hot. On my R3 I can keep them under 30ºC. Anyway, back to Amazon it goes... shame, really a shame. Finally I'd say the build quality of the Fractal Design is much better, in terms of quality of metal, etc.etc. Just my opinion

Massive thanks for your in depth review. I truly appreciate it. I'm probably in a similar boat, but just a little different. I'd have 8 Seagate Exos X20s so definitely wouldn't be easy to cool, like your WDs. However noise wouldn't be quite as big of an issue due to the room it would be in. In addition I always planned to replace the fans with Noctua and add more for better ventilation. But if temps get anywhere *near* 40C regularly, I'd consider it a failure. I was actually also considering the Fractal Design R5. It seems you and I have similar tastes. It doesn't have the hotswap bays and is a little lower on the wife scale, but it's cheaper and definitely has excellent reviews for cooling and good silence. You've given me a lot to think about. Much appreciated, from the East Coast of the US.

My wife firstly helped me move from the R3 -> CS382 -> R3 :) ... but I must say if you're not regularly swapping out drives, do you need a door and backplane etc. In reality for me, the answer is no. It's 100% about thermals and the Fractal wins hands down. I'm really pleased with the Arctic fans, and I may well add some more as they're so quiet. I can add 3 x more, one on the side door and two on the upper part. So investing in those, and they're like about 12€. a pop, is the best thing. I also have a DataVac which I pull out every few months and give the FDR3 a good going over with. Anyway, good luck with your build, do let me know here how it goes. All the best

The problem with this case is the MATX form factor. If you want PCIE GFX for transcoding, a 10GBE network connection and a SAS/SATA card for 8+ HDD's - you wont find a MATX mobo with enough PCIE slots. This is where the CS380 wins! Is the CS382 with the additional £90 (May 24 SCAN prices) over the CS380 for less bays and limited mobo options??? I dont think so...

Most modern cases don't have 5.25inch bays anymore, and most that do are going to be full sized towers. Anidees AL Raider XL has 12 optical bays but its big and expensive. Phanteks Enthoo Pro has 5 but again its a big boy, The Thermal Take W100 and WP100 can accommodate 11 Optical Bays but would need a custom bracket. You'll probably have to find older used cases for what you want or have one custom made. The Antec Nine Hundred has 9 optical bays its not a massive case but it is a standard mid tower. Other older cases to look for are the Cooler Master CM Strike Trooper or CM Storm Trooper and the Thermal Take Armor

Excellent review. I'm going to get this. I'm unclear on the rear SAS ports. I see it has 8 SATA ports behing the HDDs, but can I use an HBA in I.T. mode with two Mini SAS SFF-8643 to Mini SAS 36Pin SFF-8087 Cables?

You need to use mini-sas to sata cables instead. That's how you can use any hotswap bay that has "sata" ports in the back but is compatible with SAS. It will work fine as SAS

SATA Hard Disks and SATA Trays are always hot pluggable since it is part of the SATA spec. If your motherboard or SATA controller supports hot swapping, it is supported. But be aware - Hot swapping can be very annoying with consumer hardware even if it is supported in theory. Hot swapping is a delicate process that depends on proper OS settings and proper Adapter/Chipset/Motherboard support in your kernel. If you are interested in TrueNas: I once had a setup with perfect hot swapping support under TrueNas Core. I could pull drives from the running raid, plug the new drive in and add them to the raid. Everything worked flawlessly. When i switched to TrueNas Scale (Linux based) it didn't work anymore. The hard disk detection failed often. The point is: Everything including Software must support it and must be configured correctly. It was not the fault of TrueNas Scale or Linux - It was just a general software incompatibility / misconfiguration with my rather new board / chipset. Be aware: TrueNas for example is optimized for proffessional or enterprise use and is primarily optimized for proper server hardware. If you got a new consumer mainboard, you can't always expect Scale to support everything out of the box. Sometimes it takes a while until less common hardware is supported properly. The focus of TrueNas has always been enterprise use and server hardware.

MicroATX MOBO recommendations for an Unraid build while also fitting a mid-range GPU?

Good affords where made, but a lot of compromise too. First: I wish they had 120mm Fans in the back of the HDD trays. Maybe a bigger case? Why not ditch the odd optical slim drive bay? In a real NAS you don't need any front USB-A or USB-C. Usually one runs it 24/7 from remote.

Really disappointed they didn't go for proper SAS connectors, 2 SAS connectors would have been way more clean cabling wise than splitting into 8 sata cables.

They should of done this case with ATX mobo and 10 hotswaps, with an extra inch or 2 higher.... any update on the CS380 build you previously mentioned or are you ditching that, for this one?

I think a better idea would be for them to make a full tower case that has 3 of Silverstones own Three Optical Bay to Five 3.5in drive bay units included in it. I think its comical Silverstone makes products that adapt optical drive bays into hotswap hard drive bays and cases but doesn't make any cases with enough optical drive bays to put them in. Talk about a missed opportunity.

Do I need 8 SATA ports on my mobo to uses ll these bays? I thought I had read somewhere just one SATA for the top 4, another for the bottom but it looks like they're independent.

There nothing else that compares to this case. I've decided to use this for my TrusNas Build, but I'm definitely replacing all the fans with Noctua fans

Ouch £280 odd quid when i googled for the case and no atx mobo support is annoying for those that wish to reuse old mobo's they have. Looks good but i am glad i went for old antec cases with 2 x icy dock 4 x 3.5 to 3 x 5.25 internal enclosures and 4 x 2.25 to 1 x 5.25 internal enclosures. Yes they are honkying great boxes but i got what i wanted and it cost me alot less.

People have some idiotic ideas about air cooling. Most idiots think that you can put fans that blow air in all sorts of directions through holes that are everywhere is how cooling is done, and then they wonder why their PC's are so noisy... And reviewers follow up with this "the cpu is right here, so it needs MORE HOLES, and fans blowing in/out and all around"...
