Thank you for focusing on the adjustable square and how you got the cut for the. End of the board. Not everything is intuitive. Some things I would have learned on The job site. In this case I learned from you. Thanks again.

Yo i had a roof supported like that in prep to replace a rotted soffett/ beam whatever youd call it.. original supporr was two 2x12 with a 2x6 on the bottom to make a "U" and they butted up two parts and didnt stagger so it sagged and rotted. But i had 6 supports with the offsets and had stakes to prevent slip out. But turned out that the concrete block i used to support the stuff , half were on clay soil and half was on typical dirt., and next day it rained which sunk one damn side almost 8" in the ground.. snapped one support completely in two.. and caused the roof decking to pull away from the rafters.. just heads up to anybody else who does this, use a good size 12x12 square to set the temporary supports on even if you think the soil will hold, shit changes when it rains a bit. And soak the ground first and jack up the thing more than whats needed for when the dirt dries out..

First video I have seen to give instruction how to brace a porch. I guess the others are afraid because of liability issues. Could you not have used a small framing square instead of adjustable angle whatever? I noticed it was at right angle.

Liked the ‘stiff back’ use; good idea for those of us who always like a more is better approach. :-)
@elizabethurse3353
@elizabethurse3353 2 года назад
So the stiff back is a 2x6 that is just toenailed screwed into the 2x6 flat? Also what if you have another deck below your porch that you are keeping ? How to you brace the roof with boards on a deck surface ?

I have soft dirt. What would you recommend for stabilizer at ground level?
@CliffandCliff
@CliffandCliff 3 месяца назад
You can try driving the support stake further into the ground. And support the main post at bottom with a concrete block.
@scrapmanindustries
@scrapmanindustries 3 года назад
thanks. how would you do that if the porch roof in question was 20' high with a 10" high metal deck you need to replace?
@CliffandCliff
@CliffandCliff 3 года назад
You are welcome and that is a Good question. I would visit a local store that has scaffolding to see if they have a solution.
@johnbetsey6216
@johnbetsey6216 3 года назад
How many feet should the 2x6 be?
@CliffandCliff
@CliffandCliff 3 года назад
It all depends on how tall your porch beam is from the ground. You definitely want it to be longer than the actual height so that you can put the support at an angle and anchor it.

On a old house isn’t a good idea to put them on the front ? I plan on reinforcing the connections to the house before jacking it up . My worst fear is the old , rusty , toe nailed nails fail and the roof falls . I have seen it happen to houses around here that we’re not even being worked on .
@AB-yc2mz
@AB-yc2mz 9 месяцев назад
They explained they moved it to the side because they were having the concrete poured from the front.

Could we use 2x4s to hold the roof up? I'd like to think this is doable on my porch but I think most, if not all of my porch needs replaced completely. 😬 Thanks for the video, I enjoy watching and learning ☺️
@CliffandCliff
@CliffandCliff 3 года назад
I would go for 2x6 or bigger. When supporting such large and heavy structures like porch roofs, foundations etc you can never go wrong with doing too much. Thank you for watching and commenting Lindsay. We appreciate it.

If you use 2x4s sister two together so it's almost like a 4x4... I'm using 2x6s and will be sistering them together so it's like a 4x6. I'm also using 8 footer long boards so staggering them will let me make them longer for what I need. It's too bad you can't include pics in RU-vid comments lol. Thanks for the tips especially for using the adjustable square or "bevel guage". Thank you, keep posting Cliff!
