Simple Camera Movement & Star Wars (MicroBudget Cinematography)

Inspired by a recent rewatch of Star Wars, I'm sharing some thoughts about using the tripod more. I'm letting go of the feeling that I have to use complex camera moves with a dolly, jib, or gimbal to be interesting. Learning to be more focused and intentional with what I decide to show the audience.

Just had this exact thought and wanted to hear someone talking about it... then ended up here. Thanks for taking the time to sit down and share.

Great video! One thing I noticed (even as a kid, I've been a Star Wars fan forever) was the difference in movement and cinematography between the original trilogy and the prequels. You're right that setting yourself a limit: keeping camera movements fixed to a tripod, you can also think better about your composition. I also notice the difference between the frenetic photography of The Force Awakens with a lot of movement, dollys and quick cuts, versus a calmer composition and less movement like The Last Jedi had. I think that is another good topic to compare, because in 2 films from the same trilogy, you can notice the difference in approach between 2 different directors (JJ Abrams and Rian Johnson). Great analysis, good luck with your film!

Thanks! That's a great insight between TFA and TLJ! I might visit that at some point in the future, tbh the new trilogy still bums me out a bit. Mostly because of the total lack of consistency between the films haha.

Thanks for sharing your insights! This is really helpful for my 3d animations especially that scene from starwars with r2d2 you took as an example for the tension you feel between a static shot which for me was kind of scary when the camera rests on the tripod and when it changes to shaking handheld movements to represent the pov of the creature.

Totally! Creating that contrast is a simple way to do so much. Good luck with the animating!
