Why I'm Making My Feature Film Alone (& Why Maybe You Should Too)

Here's why I'm making my next feature film "Euky" all alone, and why you may want to give it a shot too! Making a full-length movie can be intimidating, but making it by yourself can lower the pressure quite a bit and can give you some more practice and confidence when you're ready to more heavily collaborate down the road.

Another great thing about solo filmmaking is the unlimited time. It’s only you, so you can take as long setting up shots as you like, and you can do as many takes as you want. And you can stop to think things out for a day if you want. No pressure. Just pure creation in a tranquil setting.

Totally. This is a great point! Pure creation in a tranquil setting is what I'm going after more and more.

Gosh, you hit on an important point that is never mentioned: stress! Making two short films entirely by myself (even acting in them) was how I started. And how I worked up the courage to use an actor and cameraman (unpaid) for my third effort. I am thinking now about a feature film, micro budget, made almost entirely solo. The new final frontier! I’ll be interested to see how your project unfolds.

You may not have seen it, but I actually have set this project aside now. Unfortunately, I let it get to a place with all my ambitious ideas for CG environments where I let it get away from me and get a little too "big" for what I can currently accomplish (at least without years of post-production work in front a computer, which isn't what I want to be doing for a single project). But YES, still figuring the stress and enjoyment part for myself, still in the midst of figuring out how to produce both a film I'm happy with in a way that I'm happy with.

I can totally relate to the feeling of wanting to get out of your head and just make something. Go for it! Wishing you all the luck, success, and enjoyment for making your next film.

I made a full-length movie alone. It took twice as long as it should have (22 months) and was twice as long as I had intended it to be (my target of 90 minutes became around 3 1/2 hours) because I misjudged how long each scene would be. I had to take a few weeks cutting it down to 118 minutes. Relying heavily on scenes from movies that were in the public domain, I made it only for my own satisfaction. Sound was a major problem because the noise of nearby traffic made it necessary to re-record the dialog at home and dub it in, and add other sounds to boot. It was worth it. I’ll def be following this as I want to follow this path. Btw. What blender tutorial do you think is good for a beginner?

This is a great question! There is SO many aspects of Blender to learn about so it very much depends on what you are interested in. Is it mainly green screen and virtual environments? Or do you want to composite VFX on top of live action shots? Or do something fully animated? I recommend following what you are most interested in rather than trying to learn everything, because it will become overwhelming and boring quickly (for example, I didn't find the famous "donut" tutorial that helpful. It's a good tutorial, but has no relation to green screen stuff). For green screen stuff, I may make a beginner's tutorial! I definitely recommend Ian Hubert's channel, though it's not all super beginner friendly. Like "wild tricks for green screen" shows you what you need to do. I recommend prekeying some green screen footage, downloading a free environment on a site like Blendswap or Cgtrader and then playing around with positioning it and setting up lights!
