Hi everyone, hope you enjoyed the video. Thought I'd give another display base a go to present my Kitty Hawk Fitter in more perspective. Since I'm new to the whole diorama/scenery making I chose the easy way by using AK's diorama paste. Its not the most inventive way of making a display I know but serves as a good foundation to add effects onto. I set the scene on Soviet airfield references but tried to keep the markings generic so that it could be used for other aircraft too if needed. This way I was hoping to give you some inspiration for a base of your own. Thanks for watching! The Inner Nerd

Nicely done! That AK product is neat, but it's so much easier to use 200-400 grit sandpaper to simulate concrete.

Thank you. I gave this product a go since I'd not done anything like this before so didn't know what to expect. But you're right, a lay of sandpaper would create the same effect at much less cost. Thank you and thanks for watching! :)

Great work! That AK paste looks pretty convincing, thanks for sharing. If you decide to build another airfield tarmac base, to give more interest you can make a small flat ground line or a square at the edge of the base with some airfield beacon lights!

Ecselent work. Just as recommendation add a little grass betvene an airfield blocks. On all Soviet airfields I ever been it was a grass there, particularly in the places where the planes stay.

Coming from the warhammer painting tradition, I definitely would have given the concrete an all over dark wash and dry brushed it too. Also hehe diluting the water with water!

G'DAY Mate its Oink here from down under. After making a major beginner error on my P38 Build I had a break while I watched your airfield build. So Have spent the last week making 3/4 slabs getting a grip on screeding the AK Concrete! So now making a repeat visit to tidy up a couple points before I have another crack at the P38, lucky I have a 2nd kit so can rescue the build;-)) Cheers and Beers from Down Under! oink

This is great work; thanks for sharing this. The mix of restraint and overkill makes perfect sense for this base for models that you can put some real effort into details with. I just love your work; I can safely watch you(and my other favorites) get into far too much detail and enjoy the results without spending dozens of hours on details nobody else will see(tank interiors and airplane cockpit details come to mind). Keep up the great work. Stay well.

Excellent work on the Sukhoi and your finish of the base is very good too. If I may be so free I do think that your use of the concrete mix was very labour intensive and a combination foam board for the foundation cut into recentangles and the mix for the finished surface would be a lot quicker. Also the Soviets used some wierd shapes in the ground slaps gives gives more visual effects. I suspect you will be adding ground handling equipment to the base ? These sort of items give the scene an extra pop. Soviet handling equipment is typically painted orange so its helps break the monotone grey cement. I enjoy your channel and admire your work so dont take the above to be negative.
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 года назад
Hello and thank you. Okay thanks for the tip. This is only my second base so am slowly building my experience and knowledge on creating the different effects. I got the slab shapes from the reference images you can see towards the end of the video (15:49) but I have also seen the hexagonal shapes used too on some airfields. I don't plan to make any loading equipment just yet although I did think this could be something for the future. Since the Fitter took so long to make I wanted a nice simple projects to work on next so kept model making and intricacies to a minimum on this one. But I agree it would add even more effect to the foundations I already have. Thank for the advice and it's not taken as negative - you've fully explained improvements and I like that :) I cannot stand blatantly rude and hate comments in which I would reply in the same manor.

@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd Год назад
Thank you. I kind of guessed based on the size of the model and reference images. Google will probably help if you could find out the real dimensions and then scale them. Thanks for watching :)
@DSHPerotecH
@DSHPerotecH 2 года назад
So I'll offer up my technique for making "pavement". Sandpaper, very fine sandpaper. Cut into sheets gives the illusion of slabs, and the fine grain is more in scale. I've tried making gritty paste and spreading it like the AK stuff, but it was too bumpy for scale. A 1mm bump is a 2" bump in scale.
@TheInnerNerd

Okay thanks for the tip! I want to make more scenes in the future so will use your technique if required :) Thanks for watching :)

Hello Inner Nerd ! Thanks for sharing, looks realistic. But are you sure those plates really used on airfields? For example, in modern Russia they use PAG concrete plates which size is standartized. Great work mate, just wanted to make sure you correct with X & Y sizes. Im sorry I could miss it, Im much better in reading. Your loyal fan
@TheBornDrunk
@TheBornDrunk 4 года назад
Sorry, for soviet aircrafts, plates are PAG-14. Correct sizea are here a-s-i.ru/wa-data/public/shop/products/17/28/2817/images/2949/2949.750x0.jpg just divide them to fit scale. Thank you!
@TheInnerNerd
@TheInnerNerd 4 года назад
Hello and thank you! Im not sure 100% about the sizes but you can see the references I used at the end of the video when I mask to clean up the edges. All images are of Soviet aircraft (MIG-23) parked up aside the main runway and I used these to guesstimate the size of the plates from there. They seem just off-square so used this a a very rough guide for my version. Thanks for the help though and I appreciate the effort you've gone to to get this in scale
@TheBornDrunk
@TheBornDrunk 4 года назад
@@TheInnerNerd Thanks, there are several kits with these plates from ICM in both 72 and 48 scale, there's also some photoetch kits but I don't remember who makes them. All I know is that PAG plates are sort of standart here, seen them many times.

This has been mentioned before in the comments. The images I was using didn't have any weeds grwoing between the slabs so I didn't add them in. You can see the references at the end of the video (15:49). I also didn't want to over complicate the build since I was intended to be a simple base using as little resource as possible.
