Dumbbell and kettlebell grips are very different in placement and technique.
This video is an overview of how to get proper kettlebell grip technique for the clean, rack, press and snatch.

I know this video is old but you just fixed my entire snatch after this video. Before my hands were ripping and now because I'm gripping the kettlebell the correct way I feel I have a stronger grip and can go longer without needing chalk. THANK YOU.

Is it ok to use the barbell grip, but with my wrist straight not bent back, I ask cause I tried the diagonal grip and it feels really uncomfortable on the back of my forearm, but when I do the barbell grip I feel no pain at all and I can do alot of reps pain free. I don't know if it's cause the kettlebell I have is a 50lb bell from Walmart and it has a more v shape and it's not like the one you have in the video.

Yes do whatever makes you not hurt. But chances are it's your KB. This is the proper way for everyone to hold a comp and or cast iron kettlebell

Good information and thank you for the info. I have a pair of same brand 12kgs and a pair of 27kg...the 12 kg i bought so I can learn the proper insertion, especially with 33mm handles. Its helping but i am noticing pain in my forearms where the bells rest. Is that normal? Is it something my forarms will get used to?

Hi Joe, thanks so much for this. Could you please make a similar one for the unloading/downswing portion of the clean? That's where I keep tearing up my hands despite all your instruction to just catch it in the "J" of the grip.

You may have to catch it a little bit more in the meat of your hands but it's a timing and technique issue

Good video actualy makes me think about my bells a bit, I cannot quite get the same level of diagnol in the clean grip as you with my KBs.. I think its probably the shape of my KBs though.. I can clean it comfortably from hook to across my palm resting next to my thumb and that works for me without banging my wrist unless I get it wrong that is, If I try and replicate your grip resting it almost pulls my wrist into hyper extension, I guess your KBs benefit from the wider grip whereas mine arc back in..

Yeah ditto. I tried a similar technique with the kettlebells at my gym and I couldn't get into quite the position that Joe is showing.. Seems the handle gap is too tight and would put a twisting weight on my arm.

Start with a half snatch where you drop,into rack position then back swing after the overhead.,

Still the best video on grip and hand insertion on the youtubes. You’ve taught me so much, and I remember this video as it helped me out a lot at one point. If I ever teach someone what I know, I know where a lot of it came from.

Just bought my first competition bells. I have a really wide hand and am having some difficulty with the grip in the overhead position. I will definitely try this drill to improve the transition. Thank you.

Cool. I have plenty of videos to help. Thumb and forefinger webbing should be bear the post/handle curve. 45 degree angle. Takes some time,

It will work for any bell but a few comp bells are cool to get you thinking,and training differently as well.
