Simple Hand Quilting - Big Stitch Hand Quilting 

Emma, I just love your videos. I have quilt frames and all of that but have been unsuccessful at quilting tiny perfect stitches. I LOVE seeing the stitches and I want to hold it in my hand when I quilt. You make everything so relaxed and non judgmental - no stress and no quilt police. I love your style. Please don't ever let any criticism bother you. You have an audience who loves what you're doing and that's what's important. You are helping people.

I love to hand quilt. It's addicting. I have hexes done, hundreds of grandmother flower garden hexes. I also have hand made cathedral windows. I haven't finished either one but I just turned 70 years old so I need to get with it and finish my projects. I love your videos.

Hand quilting anything bigger than A4 size is never going to happen for me, because I like seriously dense quilting. I think it is because I love the way the fabric puckers up and looks well-used after two or three washes. Your quilt has a beautiful design. ❤️

Thanks for showing the use of the marked needles. I was a little unsure of how they work. I'm glad you can get packages of different needles, which have different lengths of markings. Because I learned to hand quilt in the 1980s. The stitch standard was much different than it is today. I was never able to get stitches that small. But what I was able to manage is still much smaller than what is done today. With an assorted pack, I should find something that will please me. My problem is that I can't find those needles here in the US at present. Are you able to ship to the US? I have always believed in trying new things. I want to start your style of quilt as you go this year. First I want to finish some wips. I've made a list of up 9 wips to rotate through. It is helping not get bored and pushing on one at a time. After I finish one, I will put a ufo into that number in the rotation. After I finish 2, I will allow starting a new project. But from that point, I will only start a new project after completing 4 wips or ufos.

After a busy morning shopping, calmness washed over me as I watched your lovely video. The echo quilting around the flowers is so pretty, as is the whole quilt. Thimbles, threads and needles are a minefield ,😳it's taken me ages to find a thimble that fits my finger comfortably, and I'm sure I'm not alone in having numerous packets of needles of all shapes and sizes lol. Thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and love of quilting with us.

The hand quilting on this quilt reminds me of Japanese sashiko stitching. It is a beautiful quilt. 💖💕❤

I have being a patch work and quilter for over 30 years hand quilting has always being hard for me to get even, what a clever idea with coloured collar on the needle to keep it even and your thread looks very interesting to try. Also again a simple idea using your paper templates to create designs. I think I have always made things to complicated. Watching you work makes look so much more simple and beautiful. Thank you

I absolutely love this video. My sewing machine broke a few years ago and I can't afford to get a new one just yet. I really wanted to make a quilt to take to university with me for two reasons. One, because they look gorgeous and it would be a nice, sustainable item to take with me. And two, quilts, much like university, are very daunting when you first start. I was worried my project would never get off the ground because I no longer have a machine, and I wasn't sure if this would work with handsewing, but thanks to this video I'm now so close to finishing this thing. I am eternely grateful.

Great information and very beautiful quilt. It looks very accessible and approachable to a beginner. The first hand quilted project that I did was basically just straight stitching patterns around a patch quilt in different ways, like in circles, or swirled or lines, or whatever, and I love that but I wanted to know kind of more of a actual proper quilting way . to do it because I was just winging it. I have only done a few projects and only a couple of them involves anything like real quilting, and nothing like this that was well thought out. I did love my most recent one though, because the hand stitching was a lot more enjoyable than I had expected it would be and it was definitely a big stitch style so I would like to refine that a bit and this was a great guide. I gave that quilt to somebody and I don’t remember who and I am still so sad that I cannot remember who I gave it to and I only have one picture of it and I just loved it.

I love all the colours that you use, thank you for sharing all that you do xx if you fancy trying traditional small hand quilting, you can buy fabric with some designs printed on them. They are called whole cloth designs, and you can buy small samples that are 16”, I’ve brought some from the cotton patch and intend to make a table centre piece as some practice as I love the look of this type of quilting.

That is such a beautiful quilt, Emma. I've tried a bit of very simple straight line big stitch quilting, but had no idea that you could find hand quilting patterns! Your videos are such a help to those of us who are just beginning to learn these skills 😊

Thank you so much for this. This is exactly what I needed. For thimbles, what I have found when sewing, is that using micropore tape is great. I cover my finger with a strip of paper ( toilet paper or tissue paper) and then roll the tape around my finger a few times. This fits my finger perfectly, and because of the paper inside it's reusable for quite some time. Hope this makes sense and may be useful for someone else too.

Well done, Emma, another gentle and so peaceful video, and so packed with great information! I have been lap quilting for years, and I make a lot of my own templates. You don't need to spend loads of money to quilt, but as another lady said, there are so many videos that suggest you need all this expensive equipment when you can achieve lovely results without it. Anyone short of funds could have a look in charity shops for men's shirts, 100% cotton is easiest to sew through, and there is a lot of material there once it is cut down. I am about to hand quilt my first quilt!

You are such a good instructor, and an extraordinary quilter. Your quilting reminds me of the Amish quilter's skill-set. I loved the explanation of the tools, I learned so much. I wrap my fingers in electrical tape as I have not yet found a suitable thimble (ha, ha) - it works! Beautiful quilt!!
