Good to see you gentlemen. Great review. Thankyou. I heard my first track by Simple Minds in "Our Price" records in Oxford Street in 1980. It was called "I Travel" and I bought the 12" version, and the "Empires and Dance" album there and then. My favourite era of SM, and it's all subjective of course, are the relatively early albums, driven brilliantly by Michael MacNeils keyboards in particular, on "Empires and Dance", "Sons and Fascination" and "Sister Feelings Call". Thanks once again Andy and Mark for putting these episodes together. It's appreciated

Great episode! My first exposure to SM was Promised you a Miracle on early MTV US. I've only listened to some earlier stuff by them within the past year or two. Enjoyed hearing about the artists in Hot Stuff. Will listen to the albums featured. 😎

I've found much to appreciate in all their albums, lucky enough to discover them the day NGD released in the states when the record store was playing Love Song and I scooped up everything I could and was transcended. Things change, the music bands hear in the background changes, they grow up, life challenges change. I'll never think they sold out as their evolution was organic....shaped by chance and lineup changes that were not contrived. As much as I loved their early albums, I found that I was changing along with the band and developed ears for what they were doing. Never had to force it, Once Upon A Time resonated with me, it fit well with what I was dealing with at the time and is glorious. It sounds so good even today. Great vid gents! These 1st 3 records have aged well, sound inspired 40 years later.

Thank you Gentlemen for your honest opinions. I was 16 in 1980 and started my life in the building trade as a fresh faced apprentice stonemason. I remember at the end of punk and the beginning of electronic music Simple Minds we’re creating other worldly sounds but you could sometimes here Roxy Music and a lot of Mick Ronson also some Talking Heads. A great time to be young.

Thanks ! I'm a huge fan of Simple Minds. New Gold Dream is in my top 5 best albums ever ! Such a masterpiece (but you will talk about it in part 2 I guess.) I especially love Derek Forbes bass playing in all the earliest albums, that is hypnotizing ! And I love your Japan T-shirt !

The early to mid 80's were the motherlode for electronic pop/expermental music so it's not surprising that these young artists are so into it.

This is great guys! What I really like besides being a HUGE SM fan for like the last 35 years is the fact that you took the time to assemble this great video (can't wait to see the others). Sometime the music I'm exposed to on Electronic Cafe is new to me and sometimes I have issues keeping up. Really appreciate you pulling the car over and talking about this group. Allowed me to put my feet up and enjoy. :-)

Been a life-long fan of Simple Minds but like you guys at the age of 19 I found the first album very derivative so I didn't really sit up and take full notice until I heard Cacophony, which me and my then boyfriend became obsessed with and played constantly. We went to see them at The Studio in central London where they played the whole Cacophony set and were totally besotted by them. The rest is history. We Inter-Railed around Europe and Empires and Kraftwerk's TransEuropeExpress and John Foxx's Metamatic were our soundtrack. x

Top stuff, I was always one of those people who loved them up to New Gold Dream. At the time, I wasn't that mad on Sparkle in the Rain.But during lockdown in summer 2020, I really got into it...even gave the late 80s and 90s stuff a proper listen.They are still coming up with good stuff but like all great bands they have an imperious phase that they can't keep going.Cheers lads...love your videos.

Great show mark and Andy I love simple minds I started listening to this band in 1981 with their 4th album sons and fascination great album and bought all 80s albums best band of that decade. I’m checking out the new album you have recommended ear candy for sure this such a brilliant show thanks guys I love synth music 🎶 can’t wait for the next episode 🎹👏😍🎧🤘💿👍

Thank you so much for featuring my 2019 LP (wow... almost 2 years old!!) in the show. I'm mixing my new LP at the moment and really hope to have it out soon - those pressing plants are really backed-up and delayed at the moment but it'll be well worth the wait... a very synthy album about the space race !

Great vid again guys, Simple Minds at the time were a very experimental band with alot of influences from Bowie to Foxx's Ultravox. I really liked the instrumentals they did with Mick McNeil being the standout performer and they continued well until they became the stadium band and took on a more American sound.

I don't know why you stopped after the first 3 Albums ? Simple Minds were out of this world up to 1982 including " Sons and fascination " & Sister Feelings call " and of course "New Gold Dream ".

Great episode guys, I’ll admit I’m not that familiar with their catalogue. Even though I saw them at the Isle Of Wight Festival 2009. I wasn’t that knowledgeable. But it does amaze me how avant garde they were. Also it’s amazing as well, it just took a John Hughes movie ( The Breakfast Club ) to break them internationally. Which could have been a Billy Idol song.

Really good review of Fröst - spot on! Saw them supporting W H Lung in Brighton a couple of years ago (pre-pandemic) and they were really fantastic. I hope they're still going.

Empires And Dance. Their best ever release. Nothing else from them moves me. That is a perfect album. Also, has a Replicas keyboard line in it that links me into Gary Numan at the top of his game. I would rate this album against PiL's Metal Box and Joy Divisions Unknown Pleasures. Once they went all big hair stadium with the awful breakfast club song they had way lost it. But big respect to the early stuff here although i am surprised you didnt pick up on the Numan riff..... Btw DEVO!! Come on lads there are some great tracks there 😉

Chaps i dug out empires and played it again at work. Its a fantastic album and i see where the chemical brothers come from. So similiar in places. But the numan riff is on the track called capital city. Sorry i forgot its name. I am an old man now! Lol. Cheers.

Hi, simple minds… i really loved this band in their first years, but they lost me in the middle of the 80‘s. They developed too much bombast in their music since then in my opinion. Go on guys.

Everything up to New gold dream was quite possibly the best material produced, Sparkle in the rain was good too but for me, despite Once upon a time being their most successful album, they sold out & with the departure of some of the original band members & too much political influence on their later albums. A great band in their heyday but should have disbanded years ago but that's my opinion.
