“You’re not going to REALLY put it on the knee cap. You’re going to put it on the skin outside of the knee cap.” 😂 LOL. Very grateful for the clarification.

I was once diagnosed with chondromalacia patallae, caused not by misaligned tracking of the knee cap but by "lazy" (slow) tracking, due to misfiring of the quads caused by a "slack" rectus femoris; at least that's how the physiotherapist explained it to me. The doc felt the roughness under the knee cap by rubbing it firmly from side to side while my leg was flat on the table. Luckily for me, I was pain-free in about week after doing straight leg raises with a few pounds strapped to my foot. Prior to being told about the leg raises, another physio diagnosed patella tendonitis (the pain is usually in the same area) and told me to rest, ice and stretch, but that treatment did nothing after a month. I could be wrong on the following, but: I suspect it's better doing the leg raises while lying down; in other words, starting with the leg lined up with the upper body prior to raising it. Either that, or standing and kicking out from a weighted wall pulley that's close to the floor. I guess that doing the movement this way doesn't tighten the hip flexors too much, whereas standing and kicking up passed 90 degrees might, due to the extra hip flexion. My injury occurred about 25 years ago, and sneaks back in minor way every few years, at which time it quickly goes away after doing the leg raises again. Yes, I probably should do them all the time, but, well, you know...life sometimes gets in the way. :-) In my humble, uneducated opinion, the "regular" chondromalacia that I had gets overlooked too often in favour of misalignment (PTFS), and I'm not sure why.

Many thanks for your informative and entertaining set of videos. A doctor referred me to an NHS physio who got me standing on the leg with the bad knee with my eyes closed - didn't work! Then I went to a chiropractor who wanted me to have expensive treatment for 6 months. All this took over a year. I have tried your test, exercises and taping method and my knee has stopped aching in 3 weeks. I am so grateful, and If any pain does return I now have plenty of tape which I ordered on Amazon.

Thank-you very much. I have a bit too much fat around the knee, so taping it wouldn't work - so I tried another approach with a patella knee strap but with a tightly rolled wad of paper towels (about 1" in diameter) stuffed between the strap and knee on the outer side of the knee cap. This shifted the knee cap over to the inside and solved the problem 100% walking downstairs. The pain didn't go away totally as you say, but it's not nearly as bad. I then pulled a knee compression sleeve over the entire knee to keep the knee strap in place.

Hi Bob & Brad! Great video, thanks! Hoping you guys still check out these comments! My question is, you mentioned most of the time the knee cap may be misaligned on the lateral side of the knee so you want to tape it and pull it towards the medial side. However, how do we know which way the knee cap is actually misaligned? Mine feels like its jutted more on the medial side but I'm hesitant to tape it as I'm just not sure.

Would be good to consider/discuss that we don´t always move/bend our legs in the "perfect scenario", i.e straight line and to the front (which would provide perfect tracking of the patella, in theory at least). Consider soccer movements: tons of out of balance, multiple direction, one leg stands, through a game. Anyway, to anyone reading: stretch calves, hips, hamstrings, quads, ankles and focus on glutes strenght (main culprit, consider how much time we spend sitting).

This is an interesting video, and I'd like to try this test, BUT... my kneecaps DO NOT MOVE! This is about the 12th video I've seen today, since I started researching the pain that started today, and in several videos, I watched kneecaps being moved side to side and up and down, and mine just don't do that. In fact, I can't detect any movement AT ALL. The only thing I can detect is my skin moving a little. I don't know if this is a bad thing or not, but watching this guy's patella move the way it did, blew my mind! He and I might as well be a different species! Either that or I've got some freaky knees, if his are normal! On REAL close inspection, and by pushing REALLY HARD, my kneecaps move about 1/4 of an inch. That's it. If this pain persists until tomorrow, I'll have to see a Doctor.

Me, too! My PT sessions ran out , leaving me only 1/2 thru my rehab. Only 75% functional. 2x a week. Insurance covered 16 sessions. Thsts it. Too bad. No more, gotta go. :-( I dislocated my patella. I'm a tour guide in NYC so walking & stair climbing is my livelihood. I must COMPLETELY recover. I've watched every video. But my therapist gave me no further instructions. He taught me how to walk UP stairs in 6 weeks. YAY! But what about the other part? LOL Never got to the down stair therapy session. WTH?!!! I'm up at 4,5,6am watching videos for answers & solutions. & HOT DOGGIT I knew i could count on my boo thangs * Bob & Brad* to get me together! They're not the most famous therapists on the internet , for nothing!!!! I believe after I try this tape thingy, I'll be on my way too 100% The injury happened 6months ago. As of now, 24 weeks post injury ( no surgery BTW)Now I can do everything , pain free , even sit in a low sofaseat for hours due to my diligent exercises and drills and TENS machine daily. Thank the Lord!!! But I still can't run -at all, go down stairs, and only dance I can do is electric slide. Basic. BUMMER! I'm a trained dancer, and fierce Lindy hopper. I won't try any stunts or any acrobats but I would like to at least dance like a sexy momma in the dance floor, again :-). Thank you Bob and Brad for all of your video. I had the Patellofemoral pain and have been doing the exercises for 4 month and now I have very little pain. Can you tell me what I can do to relive the pain in my quad? 6 Doctors and 2 PT's and no one knows what to do. I think the femoral nerve is trapped in the quad. Thank you.

Many thanks for this video. I walk up a 5 mile paved road with a 20% grade once in the morning and once in the evening for a total of 10 miles. I have been doing it for years without a problem. Yesterday my left knee started to hurt half way up the hill and on the way down the pain really kicked in. !&%#@! IT HURT!! I had pain in the knee even when I wasn't doing anything but sitting or lying down. I did the exercises shown and the pain was reduced 90% almost immediately. I want to WALK as I crave the feeling it gives me but I know if I go back out immediately I will make things much worse. So I will do the exercises for the next 3 to 4 weeks and gradually start the walking routine again. AGAIN THESE EXERCISES WORK!!

Thank you, Bob an Brad! I’m a 13 year old girl soccer player, and it turned out i have chondromalacia and soft cartilage in my right knee, and i’m gonna do physical therapy for a while. I’m gonna call the man who owns the gym in my hometown, Tvøroyri, and if he don’t know what i can do for my knee pain, i’ll have to go to the doctor AGAIN. I’ve been at the doctor’s office 3 times, the hospital 2 times, and 3 different doctors with my knee. I practice soccer 5 to 6 times a week. I know i shouldn’t practice so much, but soccer is my everything. My friends, family and doctors keep telling me that i shouldn’t practice so much right now, bcz i just came back on the field after exactly 6 weeks of being BANNED from playing. I love soccer with all my heart, but i’m in so much pain when i play. I may need to go to the hospital to do physical therapy, if it turnes out he can’t do anything to help me. I can go to another town to get physio, but then i’ll lose many hours at school.

You need to strengthen your inner thigh muscles! I have tracking issues and need to realign the kneecap with exercises, super painful and massive clicking noises especially when walking downstairs and I'm on 32 and feel like an elderly woman! Wish I didn't do too much exercise, one of the reasons why I have got this issue, need to be more gentle on the knees - no extreme sports!

I wish I could watch the whole video, but when the doctor in the blue shirt started to move the knee back and forward I've had to stop. My last MRI was in 2010 , and I've got Chondromalacia of the Patella with subchondral marrow oedema in the femoral trochlea I haven't reached 40 yrs as yet. I was a gymnast. My knee problems started around the age of 8 doing classical ballet. In order to strengthen the thigh muscles, I went on gymnastics. By the age of 15 my knees were killing me, and I've had to stop gymnastics. I did not stop being active and started dancing, and by the age of 18, I could hardly walk, drive a manual car, and it was then that I've had the Keyhole knee operation which didn't fix anything. In 2004 plantar fasciitis was added to the mix, exercise is very hard for me. My brain wants too, but my legs are telling me no. My knees will give away at anytime, going up a step, doing down a step, getting up from sitting down for a while. The amount of times I've almost fall is crazy e.g. when entering a bus (public transport), as the first step on the bus as is high, like going up a step. The bus drivers always look at me with big eyes, like what is wrong with this young lady? Not knowing my knees are of a 80yrs old lady (one with bad bones that is). Naproxen and codeine are my 'friends', McConnell taping did work for me. Nevertheless like I've been doing for years, is just leaving with these pulsating, unreliable, locking, give away broken knees, as they will not kill me.

I asked before BUT NO ANSWER ...what about no pain when walking or bending. Or exercising ..severe lightening pain whenever it wants..laying..sitting..sometimes standing.last 30 sec. Or so..sometimes everyday sometimes not...nothing therapists have done to knee has caused pain..no clicking..or catching..only severe quick sharp pain out of nowhere

Hi, i think i have a problem with my patella. Whenever i walk or run i can feel that my knee cap goes out of the groove and i have this strange feeling like grinding feeling that is really uncomfortable. I tried taping it and it lessens the symptoms. I heard that leg raises helps to cure the symptoms? How long it will takes to bring back my knee to normal without taping it? I also doing some stretching and foam rolling with my quads before and after my leg day training. Thank you in advance for your reply and more power to your channel.

Every since I was about 15, I am now 25, every once in a while, my knee cap pops or gets out of place and I will fall to the ground. I have not been too alarmed since it may happen once or twice a year or maybe less than five times a year randomly..I want to go see a doctor about this now, because it happened today. I'm just wondering if this is what I may have? I have never played sports or injured my knee in any other way than the times it's gotten out of place and I just fall or almost fall. Afterwards it hurts, I cry, and the pain goes away after a day or two...Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge, and wisdom with people.

So if you do the taping and of course any exercises and stretching for this kind of pain, will it eventually go away permanently? Or is the damage under the kneecap going to keep it from getting to 100%? I got very vague info from my doctors on this, didn't really describe how it came to happen etc, and pretty much told me you can do exercises but will just have to deal with it. Not particularly something you want to hear, especially when it can get very painful... (That and the fact that they did not do the scope for my knee, so this is more of, what they think I have)

Thank you for pointing out the obvious and helping me start to figure this out. The taping was also a brilliant and easy test. I've had this pain come and go for 20 years (since I was 18). Been to my dr. Been sent for x-rays that showed nothing and just told to ice it....I'm hopeful for some relief now.

I was having a considerable amount (major) of crunching in my knees when I sat down low. I noticed my knees going outward when I sat down. The inner side of my left knee started to feel like something was wrong and slight pain occurred in that area very quickly and then went away when I sat down. I remembered when my physical therapist once wiggled my knee cap up and down and left and right to free it up when he first started me on therapy after being on crutches for a while. I had watched videos on it and remember doing it myself at home. So, this week I decided to do it again. What I found was my knee cap was stuck. I did a little up and down and left and right wiggling the first day to free it up slightly, and repeated for four more days only once a day. The creaking is oh so slight now, hardly noticeable at all. Basically my knee cap was stuck. My standing and walking is also better. When I sit down, my knees don’t go outward. They are lined up better. A couple more days ought to be enough.

My other half has Attenuated patella alta and several dislocations a week / subluxations to her joints. she too has EDS. She’s had so many operations to fix this as she has NO grove to hold knees in place . They tried to make her one . and they all failed it’s made her knee worse. She left with complex regional pain syndrome . As her surgeons have damage the nerves in her leg from her knee replacement and left her with drop foot.. This is only a temporary fix the tape is fantastic and does work. I have watch her over the years splint / brace and tape her knee for over 20 years the tape is doing the job your muscles should be as they are too weak hence the tape but the problem is she has extremely weak muscles left dip in top of the leg from muscles waste just above the knee as a result of taping the knee cap daily. It’s a catch 22 as the taping the knee has left her with other problems
