The teres minor is an important stabilizer of the glenohumeral joint. It may also be implicated in axillary neuralgia due to entrapment of the axillary nerve between itself and the teres major muscle.
This muscle is usually strengthened in a 90˚ abducted position. However, many patients with scapular dyskinesis may not be able to get into this position safely. Thus I have created a variation for this patient group, which is performed side lying, with humeral flexion.

Thank you so much I just started looking for exercises to help stabilize my very weak shoulder girdle and this looks like a great one to add to the list. I can really feel it in my teres minor, and it seems to be at the right level for me right now. My t.m. is so weak, it gets tired with just a few reps with no weight! But I'm sure this exercise will help me improve it. Thanks!

very accurate for my case : my teres minor was super weak, i had difficulty trying to place my left hand behind my back. There would be a sharp pain that lasts for 15-20 seconds After trying this exercise out, the pain was minimal & lasted for 2-3 seconds (this is after about 7 or 8 sets of 20 reps). I should be "heal;ed" by day 5 ? great job Kjetil Larsen

thank you so much for the video! just one important question. i have been suffering from a chrnoic teres minor(left) denervation which disallows my left scapular from retracting properly and symetrically with my right scapular. This causes pain in my left shoulder. Is there any way to solve teres mminor denervation or this scapular problem? im a weight lifter and this causes severe limits in lifting heavy weights. thank you

I've been taught to always pack my shoulder blades back and down, and over since I held my self on that posture for a while, I have been in a downward spiral of dysfunction with my upper back and I feel helpless now. Thousands of dollars in massage therapy and chiropractic work and I'm still full of knots and clicking in my rib/shoulders. Any help would be life saving.

I have really enjoyed you videos and explanations. Is there a reason you choose to do the exercise at 45 degrees flexion as opposed to having your arm by your side? Do you feel that performing at 45 degrees flexion will be less likely to result in poor scapular position or is it for some other reason? Thanks!

By side = infraspinatus 45 degrees = teres minor

Why 45 degree and not at the side? 45 you shoulder is forward? Right?
