the quintessential pulley airer is the starlet of the third episode in the journal of small work* and like its siblings, serves to illustrate a pairing of concepts that could serve us well in facing the challenges of living in this moment.
appropriate technology + downshifting as illustrated by the pulley airer in the journal of small work*.
what i love most fiercely about the principles of appropriate technology and its dear friend, downshifting, is their possibilities as ways of reckoning with the underlying patterns of the dominant culture at the same time as they actually practice a whole other vision of what life could be like.
if this gets at the core of why downshifting movements that draw resourcefully on appropriate technology -- like slow food, slow fashion, simple living, intentional living, mindfulness practices, radical homemaking, homesteading, minimalism, zero waste, community reliance, self-sufficiency, reskilling, homeschooling, permaculture ethics, sustainable and regenerative living --resonate so deeply and so widely, why they feel like a sane response to converging crises, then this little film has done its work.
as ever, that little apostrophe accompanying the small work* indicates a body of knowledge these films draw upon. do follow along at patreon, / appleturnover whether subscribed to support the work or not (you patrons! ♡ sustain me) for a growing collection of companion pieces and references (books! podcasts! interviews!) that expand on ideas i’ve translated into the films, by way of practical things we can do now to activate the core household economy.
*find small, slow solutions amongst the principles in permaculture
*with great thanks to kate raworth and jason hickel for their work into doughnut economics and degrowth

Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I've been thinking of the pattern languages of daily life. One of your last videos inspired my wife to use the patterns behind building a shelf for explaining the difference between a recipe and a pattern. We're deeply enjoying how you weave patterns with homesteading. It's making me think differently about the narrative work and community food work I do.

Your content is so easy on the eye, what we call it here. Absolutely love it! What was your “previous” life looked like? Where you involved in design of some sort or is it just a natural part of you? Everything in the little details, the angle of the video, furniture, books sorted in colours.

oh, that’s sweet, alice. i grew up close to a nz family and know that phrase well. my previous life is as an artist and designer, daughter of an artist…with a definite weakness for interiors influenced by a few years living in england too. i’m pleased you love it. i have to regularly assure people that the camera is pointed *away* from the mess, i definitely also live with the chaos that is a full life! i’m glad you love it.

I love this video. I did have trouble watching it though, the volume of the music is far to high. I had to turn the video down so low I could barely hear you speaking. Thank you for the wonderful content in your videos :)

sorry to hear the mix came out too pitchy for you. i do try not to have music and speech together- i grew up in a hearing-impaired household so it is a vivid concern. so hard to mix for all the players. hope the subtitling helped and thanks for your kind words.

Maybe the economy can invest in small farms. And those farms trade goods and then the city's can try different farming ideas.

aha! that’s a whetstone for sharpening blades. that one has two grades of grit, more coarse on one side, more fine on the other. i’m still learning to sharpen. i have another that i can hold in my hand/soak in a metal holster which i use for my scythe, it’s also great.
