Sinbad Legend of the Seven Seas (2003) Movie REVIEW | Does It Hold Up?
Released in 2003, Sinbad is considered to be a dud of a movie. Little more than a brief whoopsie-daisy by Dreamworks in between the release of Shrek and Shrek 2. But does it really deserve that hate?
The film has a problems, sure (I mean, what film doesn't) ...But perhaps those problems are not that important. Maybe its story, character, and heart really do stand the test of time.
Today on Hollywood Ruins Everything we try to sort it out once and for all. Is Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas really as bad as people thought it was when it was released or does it actually hold up?
Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas Cast:
Brad Pitt as Sinbad
Catherine Zeta-Jones as Marina
Michelle Pfeiffer as Eris
Joseph Fiennes as Proteus
Dennis Haysbert as Kale
Adriano Giannini as Rat
and Timothy West as King Dymas

Wait, the siren scene 100% has a point to it. It's for Marina to prove her independence and bad-ass tactics to save the crew.

This movie deserves another chance ! The animation is just smooth, flowing and full of surprises! Love the Soundtrack too! Even though there’s no songs except for the Sirens part, it still works as a very unique movie focusing on the adventure and the story! Love the character design for Sinbad, Marina and Eris! Sinbad himself is just so developed from being a selfish “black-hearted” thief to a wise and selfless hero! It would be awesome too if Dreamworks would revive the existence of this movie by giving it its own tv series just like Netflix did to Spirit! I’m pretty sure it would be interesting to see what adventures Sinbad, Marina and his crew would end up after the end of the movie to continue its legacy!

Underrated doesn't do this film justice. It's a really good film and I was really confused as to why it got as much hate as it did. Then I realized, the Blu-Ray version released in June of 2019, and that's the version I watched, so I'm interested to see how it compares to DVD quality, but even beyond that I found great animation decisions that blow some of the stuff today straight out of the water. I still, have NO IDEA, what people had against this movie, and I read TONS of reviews. Another problem was a lot of the reviews were conflicting. Some would say no character arcs that stood out, while another would comment on the uniqueness of some of the characters. It was really strange to find out how consistent it was that when someone mentioned something they disliked, another reviewer would tout that as an awesome part of the movie and it was actually this other thing that was bad. In reality, the reviews were really half-baked and it felt like a dismissed assignment the reviewers had to do, when really they just wanted to watch the new Terminator. It's a puzzle to figure out what the true problem was, other than it was a product of its time. Dreamworks had recently made Shrek at that time and audience expectations were thriving for the CG style w/ over the top humor. Also, Treasure Planet and Atlantis came out just before this movie, and I think the animation style was taken for granted, even though those are praised for their animation as well. Problem is, they miss out on an amazingly well animated piece of art. Tragic.

@@briannabrickey444 again, I think the market was saturated at the time. If anything, reviews of it now should be able to appreciate it more. That's mostly why I'm disappointed in this video. I want to tell you something important when it comes to the history of this movie. There is a high possibility that it didn't actually lose 125 million dollars and it's just a big misunderstanding. You might be thinking that I'm crazy since there are tons of articles which say it did but think about it, the film earned 80 million on a 60 million budget. I know that it wasn't a success but by doing the math, it doesn't make sense that it lost more than double its budget. Plus, DreamWorks doesn't like to talk about their past, in fact, Katzenberg once tried to make us believe that Sinbad didn't exist in an interview and that Spirit was their last handdrawn movie. So there is no legitemate interview or article that goes into the details of how this movie did at the box office. Then how did they lose so much money? Well, AniMat explained this in his "top 10 animated bombs" video. Maybe it's because of a couple of movies. Back then, DreamWorks Pictures and DreamWorks Animation were pretty much the same company and they split up shortly after the release of Sinbad, maybe they lost so much money on both Sinbad and other films made by DreamWorks Pictures which also flopped, like The Cat In The Hat, and maybe that's also the reason they had to split up.

I agree with some stuff, I disagree with other. First I was expecting the SOUNDTRACK to be mentioned, I think that it really really stands out even in the battle scenes, it’s really good. I agree with the fish scene it could have been maybe better, but I don’t agree with the siren battle review that you made. I think that you said that marina was proving that she was able to save everyone, but I think that this scene has a lot going on. First it shows you that man are not perfect, they make mistakes and sometimes woman need to step in. Second, I think that it shows that marina can “ take the ship” which is a reference to every woman can do everything that she proposes to do and she wants to do, every woman out there can do the same exact thing that a man can. In fact she does it so well that she saves everyone, gets the ship out, and when sinbad kisses her she punches him meaning that she is not only not into him, but she does not care about him at all in that moment. As a woman, I really like this scene, it’s such a powerful move. As for Eris I love her, the development and the sea creatures are amazing. I wished you could have talked more about sinbad and proteus relationship because that tensión it’s really interesting. Especially with Marina. Which is another thing that I enjoyed. She was asked to marry Proteus because it was her duty, but she realizes that duty and being yourself are two different things, therefor following the sea and with that falling in love with sinbad because she saw that goodness in him. This movie it’s really amazing and most of the things are meaningful. The characters are good and in some scenes the side characters are funny and interesting. Thank you for the review

It's a visually beautiful movie, just fantastic animation and beautiful scenes. Some of the cgi is dated, some of the monsters and the water and stuff is obviously 2003, but still. Aris is just trippy, weird smokey hair, her whole dessert is dreamlike, her star lair is cosmic and epic, it's just dope. The fight scenes are fast paced and sick, so we'll choreographed. The character development of sinbad is next level. He's so believable and personable and it's just tear-jerking. The romance is... Average. Not unbelievable, but not quite as sympathetic and cute as wall-e. The dialogue is quick and funny, with relatively few cheesy or cliché lines. I think that the reason this film flopped might have been the fact that plot was so linear. It was elegant and simple, proteus taking sinbads place was solid, nice, great writing, perfect setup. Sinbads desire to run, and marinas stowaway was just grade-A. But all 4 obstacles that our hero's face on the way to tarterus were just arbitrary and thrown in by Aris. With the exception of the sirens showing sinbads stubbornness and proving marinas worth, and the ice tower showing sinbads heroic heart, they didn't really do anything to further the narrative. The fish island and the end of the earth were just time filler action sequences. Pretty and fun, and they did show sinbads guts and brain, but still, they could have been left out of the film. They should have had challenges that more meaningfully tested our characters... Character. Honestly, the best parts of this movie are everything that happens in siriquece and everything that happens in tarturus. Sinbads test and his return to save proteus is just golden, moving, fantastic. The major chunk of the movie, the second act where the crew have to fight aris' arbitrary monsters, is just Dora the explorer-esque. Its crazy how fragile a movies success can be. It is unfortunate that this movie flopped, I feel especially bad for the animators that put so much time and effort into making a truly unique work of art.

Do you think Pirates of the Caribbean drew inspiration from this? There are a lot of similar plot points, particularly in the second and third movies. 1. Kraken-like monster 2. The pirates sail into frozen waters 3. They sail off the edge of the world 4. An obscure goddess from classical mythology is featured Admittedly, all of these plot points can be found elsewhere too, but I think it's very interesting to see them all in the same place in both Sinbad and POTC.

One of the things that made no sense to me is the fact that the town of Sirakuz or whatev seemed to do just fine before the book of peace was brought and after it was stolen everything went all hell and loose. So why bring the book in the first place lol

Well, one thing I find a BIT offensive about this movie is that, Sinbad is supposed to be an Arabian/Middle Eastern story, yet the movie made this movie all about Greek Mythology rather than Arabian. The only Arabic thing in the movie is the Roc! This is cultural white washing!

Lol the trope of "woman leaves absolutely perfect man to shack up with a mediocre asswipe" is strong in this one. Women that want a Sinbad instead of a Proteus are the ones that'll be divorced in five years chain smoking in a trailer with 5 shitty kids who call them by their first name instead of "mom".

Most of the Disney cartoon movies are good. I love this story of Sinbad.

This movie i underrated never found myself board of the movie and actually succeeded in making a strong female character which alot of movies fail by falling into the trap of just giving a woman character men qualities

But given no experience in sailing its a bit unrealistic how they survived the sirens and the romance is a bit cliche but im not a critic so i dont really care about that stuff all i care about is did i enjoy it

Hello comments section! Have you seen Sinbad? If so, what did you think of it? Also are there any other movies you want us to review? Let us know here.

I think your review was very well done and I agree with your assessment. Sinbad is a fun, creative movie. I think one of the reasons it wasn't so successful is that the promos didn't really sell you on the story it mainly focused on the actors. Kids don't respond to name-dropping unless it's somebody relevant to them. But overall I really enjoyed the movie. One thing you didn't mention was the score, which was really engergetic.

+Nina Cass Thanks Nina! Yeah the score was pretty good. It's unfortunate that the marketing was handled in the way that it was though.

I liked both your review and the movie. Could you maybe review another Dreamworks or Disney film that didn’t do well at the box office? Like Megamind or Treasure Planet?

Denise Ringo Treasure Island was such a great movie. I don't know why it wasn't a success. It had everything going for it.

+Denise Ringo Treasure Planet would be a fun one to do. I'm getting ready to move and start a new job, so I may not be able to tackle it right away, but I'll add it to my list for sure!

I bet they have made a lot money off of sales down the road I wonder how much it has made since then. They also shouldn't have wasted dollars pushing out a terrible game for no profit. Stupid marketing and management.

Worst Dreamworks film imo. No wonder it flopped so hard. Awful blend of cgi and 2d, unconvincing romance with no chemistry, selfish douchebag of a protagonist, lame ending, etc. Eris was the only good thing in it imo.
