2023: This is truly a transcendent performance of an already beautiful, spiritual and soulful song. Let's get it over a million to show others how special it is 💙
Beautiful, fragile but oh Sinead you're so much stronger than you know. An incredibly touching rendition that she is able to engender with her own sensitive Celtic twist. Lovely.
Sinead imparts a real energy to this song. And to think, in a parallel universe, there is all those stage prancers delivery anodyne songs in voices void of pain or elation.
She's beautiful... In every shape, manner, form, and fashion of the word... she's beautiful. Only someone who has known life's worst pain can bring that emotion...
Excellent rendition of this beautiful song. Sinead has captured the drama and character of the Mary Magdalene/singer as intended in the musical I believe.
She is amazing. Not a single thought, word or phrase un considered, unfelt, or insincerely delivered To take such a well known song, a song, that on the outside is just another live song, and make it truly her own without being untrue or unfaithful to the meaning and meter if the original - That is musical genius, people
Its not just another love song. Mary Magdalene was a prostitute well used to the (bad) ways of men and as the song points out - she had many men before. The point was he (Jesus) got to her in a way no man had, she is confused and working through her feelings. Its a brilliant song and moving song, with a powerful story line that most performers simply miss. Yvonne Elliman does the best version, because she gets the back story and was the original performer, but this is very good because Sinead also gets it. The tragedy is it gets sung as just another love song by most of those who perform it.
dnmurphy48 whats more some scientists believe based off of a semi-recent archealogical discovery that the real life Jesus and Mary Magdalene did get married and have kids
That is true. However, I think that the character, Mary Magdaline in Jesus Christ Superstar ( from which this song is from) was portrayed as a prostitute. I'm not certain, though. It's been a long time since I saw it
I help on a hotline for "highly sensitive" people or empaths, who have been through significant abuse from narcissistic people. They all want to know why, why did the people they love so patiently and truly, scar them continually, as if they were nothing...yet they never would let them go. We can listen to all the narcissist videos in the world, and they can explain or reveal a lot...but they can't really say WHY, other than "narcissistic supply", and that's just too horrible to fathom. Empaths, or just really cool people, can't get their mind around it. I was sitting here looking out over the Rhine, the moonlight shining down, and I just finally, had to get quiet, and ask so sincerely for help, anything I could say to give people a better reason...and this song just popped into my head. I loved this song as a child, I would sing it in the car to the back of my mom's head from my car seat and always cry at the end, but I never really knew why. Well, tonight, I came up with this...why did they kill Jesus, or any other person of love and wisdom? Because of how they made them feel, and how they could not listen to it, for if they really heard, they would truly get the wisdom of good and evil...and once we understand what evil really is, and are loved by someone who proves it is possible be good, it blows the whole illusion. Justification is gone, and honor is standing there in plain sight, and then, they have to choose. And most people, then or now, need to remain ignorant, so they will...kill you.
+Mark Holman By the silver in her hair I believe this is a late vidio. I think , at last, she , in all her great talent and tribulation, is making peace with God. Godspell Is Godspell!!
There are very few singers who could have matched Yvonne Ellmans original version of this song from Jesus Christ Superstar.Sinead O Connor was such a vocalist.Sweep softly my Stolen Child.
There are many renditions of this song on the internet. But there is something really special in the way Sinead sings this. She sings with all her heart and soul. It is absolutely beautiful and meaningful.
I always thought this song was sort of cheesy. Until now. Whatever her stumbles, Sinead is a singer with few equals. She sings with her whole body. It's really amazing. I'm digging the more mature, husky tone.
