For many Chinese Singaporeans, Teochew rice porridge is one of the ultimate comfort home style meals to eat. And around Singapore at many of the hawker food court centres you’ll find stalls that specializes in rice porridge and side dishes. There can be a huge range of different dishes available, most of them either stir fried or braised, and all different types of meats and fish. Some of the dishes are on the plainer side while others are more spicy or more salty. One of the top recommendations for Teochew rice porridge that I received was Soon Soon Restaurant (near Kovan MRT), and so one day for lunch, my wife and I headed over there. Luckily we just barely beat the main lunch rush before it got too busy.
Although housed in a shophouse restaurant, Soon Soon is pretty much like a hawker stand. You go up to the front of the restaurant, where all the food sits on display, and you pick and choose whatever dishes you want to order. From there, you can choose if you want the rice porridge or just a plain plate of rice to go with all of your side dishes. Many people order for takeaway, but if there’s an available table, it’s a nice restaurant to hang out for a while and enjoy a delicious lunch. There were so many different dishes to choose from that it was a bit of a tough decision, but I finally arrived to the front of the line and chose chicken in a dark sauce with shreds of ginger, eggplant with chili and garlic, long beans fried with garlic, a steamed fish, and a piece of braised tofu.
The Teochew rice porridge was a little soupy and sticky at the same time. Unlike congee which is very mushy and sticky, this rice porridge remains more individual so you can feel all the grains of rice. In Thailand this style of rice soup, known as khao tom, is also very popular. All the side dishes were as delicious as they looked, simple and tasty. The dish I really like the most was the chicken stir fried with lots of sweet and spicy ginger, that was amazing. Soon Soon Restaurant is a wonderful place in Singapore to eat Teochew Rice Porridge.
Address: 13 Simon Rd (Near Kovan)
Open hours: 8 am - 9 pm (closed on Tuesday)
Prices: All depending on how much you order, side dishes are about $4 SGD per plate
How get there: It’s about a 5 minute walk from Kovan MRT station
Thank you to all of you who recommended this place!

You should definitely try mixing the porridge with some Chinese pickled vegetables and salty or century eggs. Very traditional.

Hey Mark, eating rice porridge can also be a one-handed meal. Hold the bold with one hand, and eat with chopsticks by shuffing them into your mouth. My teochew grandfather used to eat rice or porridge that way and it looks so tasty whenever he ate it like that.

This is my favourite place to go to for teochew porridge. It's run by my friend's uncle! I usually add the gravy from the braised duck that they serve into the porridge, makes it a little less plain. Oh and you should've gotten the braised duck, it's the bomb and probably is the best dish there to go with porridge!

Hey Mark it's Nicholas here, I recommend you to eat this dish called Lor Mee it is located at Old Airport Road. This dish specialise in their awesome sauce, oh yeah remember to put more garlic in this dish as you are a big fan of them and also add vinegar to have awesome sourness taste. The dish I believe it normally sells in the morning. Hope you like my recommendation and look forward your next food video cheer!!!😁👍🏻

The "chicken" is actually frog meat, I think. Usually ginger and dried chillies are added to cook this meat to mask its fishy smell and it tastes like "soft" chicken and smoother when you swallow. Chicken meat dishes usually comes in larger chunks. Reminds me of a story..... the maid: Sir, what size of meat portion do you prefer big piece or small. Cut it the same size as my mouth.

Mark, you don't need the spoon when eating a meal such as this. The traditional way is to hold the bowl with the left hand, use the chopsticks to pick up the food to put in your mouth, and then bring the bowl to your mouth and use the chopsticks to push the rice porridge into your mouth. Also, the dishes that are eaten with Teochew porridge are meant to be eaten by a typical Chinese family on a daily basis, which means that they are known NOT to have strong flavour and taste. In fact, a Teochew porridge meal is known for its "plain taste". It is still tasty but definitely not the kind of strong, flavourful food that you would expect in a restaurant.
