🏅 Whitney songs werent really about range it was more power. all her notes had power and techniques more so than range. this is why when other singers sing her song they seem to get vocal fatigue. because what they lack in power they seem to try to compensate with range and strain. 🏅
@Devon Hawkins-Anderson i mean out of the 2.5 only 2 will be chest. Other will be head. And only in few songs she pass F5. So it's more power than range when you consider other vocalists songs.
Lol you can’t say that because songs are only notes written on paper and really anyone can sing notes. What matters is what you bring to those notes. Power and a wide vocal range is something you’re born with. You can practice and get close to it but it’s an innate vocal gift. The thing is you’re so used to hearing Whitney’s version and loving her style of singing that you compare everyone else to her. That’s not the individuals singers fault.
@j w that's literally what i said. Whitney was great but not because of her range. She is a less rangey singer than most famous vocalists. But she had other areas where she exceled. Those things make her once in a generation singer, not range. My only comment was that Whitney wasn't a rangey singer as many claim, eg the comment who said 2.5 is large range.
There is a thing that is called supported range as well... Most females even sopranos can't support a note above eb5 while whitney could support of to g#5.
It will come, Random Girl. To be as good at singing this song at 22 when she did it at the White House was extraordinary. In 10 years she’ll be the best ever.
If popularity was directly proportionate to talent, Jessie would have ended the industry! And Leona definitely wouldn’t be nearly as underrated as she is. They nailed this! ❤️
@@Motocicleiros I tend to agree. The climax for Whitney's OG (B major) is already emotionally intense enough so you don't really need to do anything extraneous with it to make it great, like raising the key up to 11 and adding extra undeed runs.
Nothing beats the original, but I love So Hyang's version...she has an amazing range. Johnny Manuel from America's Got Talent should be in this list too, he did a great job.
Sohyang... I just know you would've made Whitney so proud, absolutely beautiful! And Jessie J absolutely KILLED that performance, gives me chills every single time I hear it!
Whitney was not one in a generation but in a lifetime. She made it seem so effortless with the beautiful instrument that was her voice. You realize when you hear so many good singers STRUGGLE to push it out. You are missed 😞
whitney jessie and sohyang for sure! whitney cuz.. hello, jessie cuz i feel like she really feels the song and embodies the message and i will never get tired of her added riffs, and sohyang for the amazing new arrangement and the sheer difficulty of it all
honestly i didn’t like Ariana’s performance too much. idk if this just me, but she sounded tired and very tense. if she did it now, i would definitely love it. edit: i don’t think she had the power in her voice like she does now.
@@skarlet8812 I agree!! I think it was the nerves cause her cover of Beyoncé's in like 2011/2012 were actually powerful. I think she's more technically better now so she's more consistent with her vocals. I wish she did a "I have nothing" and "emotions by mariah" cover again. Cause her voice is much better now.
So the guy Gabriel killed it. 🤯 And Soh Yang also absolutely incredible. Many of them did a great job, honestly. Leona, Jessie, both excellent. At the end of the day though, it’s not just about the notes. And hearing all these incredible singers does just reiterate how extraordinary Whitney was. There was an artistry about her delivery, and that tone is just incomparable.
Leona, Glennis and Jessie were my favorites. Ariana’s was a close second (although I base that on her Honeymoon Tour performance of the song) Also Jake’s version was actually a semitone lower, Glennis’ was just a tone lower (the same key that Whitney sang live), Davina’s was just 2 tones lower
Jennifer Hudson's was also a semitone lower. Glennis hit a C#5 and a E5 for the climax, whereas Whitney hits a Eb5 and F#5 in the studio version, so she is indeed one tone and one semitone lower. You are right that it is the same key as Whitney's live performance. Christina is 3 tones and 1 semitone because she hit a B4 and a D5. Sorry if I come off as rude or petty, I was really just bored.
jesus christ you guys don’t have to like the tone of certain singers or their approach, but that doesn’t make them bad just because YOU don’t like how they sound. Some of y’all are so negative, it’s painful to read singing comparison comments. Anyway I think everyone did a phenomenal job :)
Correct pitches (only considering the last part of the song): Jennifer Hudson 1 semitone lower; Glennis Grace 1 tone lower (Whitney used to sing this song in this key live); Davina Michelle 1 tone and 1 semitone lower; Christina Aguilera, 2 tones lower; Sohyang the final part in 1 tone higher.
@@Marco_Fabian37 a semitone is the shortest interval in our (western 12-TET) music. That is why we can find the key of F and we can find the key of F#, they are a semitone (half step) apart and they are two different keys. Whitney Houston sang I Have Nothing 1 tone (whole step) lower. 1 tone is made by 2 semitones (half steps). If the studio version is in G she sang live in F. G -> F# (Gb)-> F = 2 keys lower.
@@Marco_Fabian37 2 tones (a major third) are made by 4 semitones. That is the distance from C to E for example. From C to E we can find 4 keys: C, C#, D, Eb (D#)… and then E
Jessie and Glennis slayed it, the emotions, power in those belts... That was just brilliant :) the rest of them, lost depth while reaching higher sounds
I like glennis version. Whitney possessed amazing range and power together it was like god fine tuned the bass and treble of her voice at the correct levels !
You totally get it. What you describe is voice coordination. She is coordinating her registers so well that no matter how high she belts, you hear the same kind of richness, depth and darkness and also brightness. The other singers gave to give up depth and richness abs concentrate on brightness . That is why her sound was so palatable to the ears. Good ears I mean
Some of these people made my ears hurt. 🙉 Whitney’s voice was so powerful yet gave the most beautiful warm tone you never got tired of hearing it live.
Whitney usually don't sing any song live in the same key... Actually not only whitney, most singer lower their own songs when going live... Do you guys really think singing in the studio and live is the same thing?
When Jessie J's clip came up, I was reading the comments and thought the video went back to Whitney for a second.🤣🤣🤣 Also, Chris Colfer deserves to be on this list. He sang this song in its original key too. I played both Chris's and Whitney's versions of the song ( which is literally the exact same) at the same time, and had goosebumps for 15 minutes.
They all did amazing! It takes so much to accomplish what they've done! But I have got to give MAD props to Gabriel Henrique! I almost fell through the floor 😯
I will go for the woman who sang this piece very clear without any trace of strain. She took this song in a higher level and Her version sounds like she own this song. 😭 Who is this So Hyang?
@@jubilorencegeromo3959 They put the strained f#5 intentionally for the emotions, and also sohyang and whitney have different techniques, technically Whitney's techniques are superior, range isn't everything
@@jubilorencegeromo3959 Whitney didn't strain, she intentionally added rasp to her voice (for dramatic effect). And also, So Hyang sings in a very heady mixed voice, which makes it easier for her to belt higher. Whitney Houston was a true soprano that mainly used her chest voice in her upper belts, that's why Whitney Houston's tone is so rich and metallic. This is also why she is considered one of the hardest female vocalists to cover. It's not about range, it's her VERY difficult technique.
Fun fact: Whitney herself has never sung this song in its original key live. Also, you should've chose the The Voice one for Christina, the one she sang with Whitney's hologram
After rwcoeding i have nothing. from 1993 to 1994 whintey had to sing this song around 200 times . None of other singers in this video would even be able to sing it 5 keys lower for hundred times night after night lol .
@Devon Hawkins-Anderson The thing about is this song was most likely recorded at least a year to 18 months prior to her ever having to sing it live. And she was also singing I Will Always Love You at the same time she was singing this song so it’s understandable why she sang it in a different lower key from the studio version. Whitney had 3 albums and 3 concert tours before she began singing any songs from The Bodyguard soundtrack not to mention countless television specials/awards shows. I noticed some of the others that were on this video would either be strained and/or winded trying to hold these notes. The amount of off pitch notes on this clip is astonishing. I am convinced Whitney actually preferred singing I Have Nothing over singing I Will Always Love You b
@@jobuck879 Aside from that, they all do not have the correct balance in their voices for the song, they are all in their head and this song is sang with the dramatics of the way a tenor will belt, none of them could even belt in the coordination she used, they all have to access a lot of light mechanism to do it, hence the lack of depth in all the versions.. Only Jennifer had some depth, Jessie J in some spots, the rest just no...Charice had to fake her tone with distortion to carry the depth that comes so naturally to Whitney..The coordination she used in singing this song is what made this song so successful. it is full throttle chest dominant belting.Low larynx, open throat, big, fat notes...
More I watch these videos, more I think there are really few singers who can match the Jessie J range, power and vocal technique; for example, just Leona Lewis can be compared here (obviously excluding the original singer, W.H in this case).
who is the legend? if she is then everyone in the clip is, because nearly everyone in that clip is more famous and more lauded than the one who ended it...she is aligned only on RU-vid...and for the wrong reasons
@@liamcuerquis9631 I think you should ask yourself, what you mean by "ends with a legend? I do not see any legend at the end? so can you explain ? How the singer at the end is a legend like the one in the beginning? which is not even up for debate. The fact that all of them are singing her song, already shows who the legend is.. But are you okay? seriously? How is the lady at the end a legend?
@@liamcuerquis9631 Typical kid, when they can not sustain in a debate with constructive ideas, they throw their toys out of the pram...by way of personal attacks.. Kid, it is okay, you are a keyboard Ninja and cry when you are schooled by adults. Next time ask for permission from mummy, I think your online time is up.. You are loosing it.. It is a simple question, I do not see a legend at the end.. I only see a bunch of girls trying to sing the song of a legend. You are super pressed..kid..
@@internationalfilipino-arti4068 the song fits her just fine and if she was really trying she would nail like it she does just about everything she covers.
Ariana made it very beautiful I think she did it better than whitney, also keala made it wonderful, Jessie j gave her the power what it needed it was fantastic , and jennifer hudson just made it magic sound so beautiful.
@@moony._.j i can respect your opinion, but that era ariana? not better than whitney. she was straining. like a lot. i dont know if that me or not, but she sounded tired and strained.
The only one who looks effortless & like they're not even trying is Jessie. I'd never noticed before but even Whitney ( at the start) looks like she's trying, right at the top of where she can go .
I've watched several episodes of this channel and all I want to know is why do continue to exclude Kim So-hyang from here? She is the reigning Queen of female vocalists. I challange anyone here to go to RU-vid and put in Kim So Hyang and I have nothing. Then see if I'm right, some say she's better than Whitney but I will only say she is equal.
There's just no one...and I mean no one who can match Whitney's overall strength, tone, soul, power, and control all in one. I mean she was always SPOT ON and sang with sooooo much passion. Uhhhggg 😭😭 such a sad sad turn of events. Tragedy.
