Simon Gawesworth explains and demonstrates the basics of Spey casting with a single-handed rod. This video doesn't delve into any particular Spey cast, rather it shows the concept of how to make a Spey cast with a single-handed rod, and lays a very solid foundation for improving casting skills. Many fly fishers believe that Spey casting is a tool only for salmon and steelhead anglers, and for using with long, two-handed rods, but Simon shows how important it is for trout anglers to have a knowledge of the Spey cast in their armory. In addition, Simon explains how this knowledge can help a caster make more efficient casts with obstructions behind, make angle changes with ease, and introduces the evolution a caster should go through form the humble roll cast, to the powerful single-handed Spey casts.

Awesome drone take for viewers reference 👌. Nobody better than Simon to clear the smoke by taking over the explanations with imaginary or visual examples to a better understanding of the exercise to later be easily to remember when we are knee deep. Thank you so much Rio, is like being a passionate artist beginner, and be able to watch Michelangelo explaining techniques on how to paint alfresco. Best instructor ever 👍👍👍

well done.. I am an old dog that is learning new tricks.. I did some fly fishing when I was younger but was self taught and found it took time form my rod and reel fishing.. But now at 67 it is more about the "job" then the results and so I am going off and learning more about fly fishing (still self taught.. everything I have ever learned has been that way.. stubborn I guess) so I can use it to get back out in the beauty of nature.. Thanks for the share and please carry on..

I have been using the single handed spay technique for the past several years and find it very effective on certain waters . Like the video :-)

Interesting way of looking at it. I personally always viewed Spey as a subcategory of roll cast. Just anchor setup being the major differentiation. D loop size is just D loop size. You can do Spey casts with small D loops and vice versa.

its just a way to get the line started to get the line where you want it to go at the end In Simpler teams. where having a larger D loop is OK

Very Nice Video! So in this Case You have a 9’ 5wt rod why do you loaded with a 7WF fly Line is not supostube to heavy for the rod or this’s how works...?
