Brockovich became a household name after she publicized the water crisis in Hinkley, California. She faced Pacific Gas & Electric in a multi-million dollar lawsuit that eventually inspired a movie.
Why is everyone so offended the mention of Erin being a single mother? It's only to highlight the fact that she accomplished all she did for the people of Hinkley while simultaneously raising children on her own. That's impressive and she deserves credit for it. Theres nothing offensive about it
You’re not raising your own children when you work. If you have a nanny, daycare or someone else babysit or watch your children while you work they are the ones who raise your children
@@Cabledeluz1977 It's not either or. You both raise the children. You and the caregiver. And you have more authority about what gets taught and rules, usually.
@@Terra_Lopez if it makes you sleep better at night then tell yourself that. But women who work and have other people take care of their children aren’t raising them, aren’t feeding them, aren’t playing with them. It’s a problem in our society. Women should be taking care of their children. What child wants to go straight from school to a daycare? Terrible!
I grew up in Hinkley and spent a lot of time in the hospital (Victor Valley Hospital) as a child. The doctor couldn't understand why a 9 year old boy was having "health problems that only old men have." We moved out of Hinkley when I was 12. I started getting better but still have health problems to this day. We never knew about the hexavalent chromium in the water. Then, one day, my sister called me and said, "You have to go rent the movie, "Erin Brockavich" right now and watch it." I asked why? She said, "You'll know why when you see it." So I did. It left me in tears. I finally understood why I've had so many health problems. I've had two different cancers, disks in my spine blowing out, and severe spinal stenosis. I actually called the attorneys and asked if I was eligible for some of the settlement money. They took my info and sent me a reply letter telling me we lived too far from the "contaminated aquifer." Years later, I found out that PG&E had bought almost all of the homes in our neighborhood and leveled them. 😢
I watched this film with my 14 year old grandson last Wednesday. He held my hand through the last 30 minutes. He is not the hand holding kind. This is frightening. When I told him this is a real story, he gripped my hand even harder!
She is in that town in Ohio. The one with the train derailment. If I was the company of the train. I be shaking in my boots. You go Erin. Take care of the people
$333 million settlement for 400 plaintiffs. That's $832,500 for each plaintiff, if divided evenly. Oh wait, according to the movie, Masry's firm got 40% of the $333 million which would be $133.2 million, leaving $199.8 million to be divided up among 400 plaintiffs. That would be about $500 grand per plaintiff before taxes. Doesn't seem like enough considering their suffering and losses.
You make and excellent point and I agree it seems unfair. However, would Mr Masry and Ms Brockovich and Ed's firm have fought the case pro bono? Also, one wonders who pays the salaries and consultants and the other research fees to fight the case? Did the judgment include any consideration for those who legal fees?
Something I like to consider is the fact that the company didn't just get away with it. I have personal experience with big companies being allowed to do horrible things to the environment without being held accountable. Of course, that amount of money doesn't even being to deal with the fact that someone'a health is horribly effected!
If you listen closely to the story, the money was not divided evenly. The money was allocated based on injury. Watch the last scene with the plaintiff who had all her reproductive organs removed. $5 million.
God bless Lilliana Melendez (06:39) for coming forward about PG&E having instructed her to take all documentation and destroy it . Brave woman!!! PG&E told residents it was safe, even good to drink the water! Sound familiar ... Ohio train derailment catastrophe?!😒 Thank Heaven for Erin Brockovich, what a brave, tenacious gal
I never realized how much Julia Roberts looked like Erin Brockovich until I saw this video's thumbnail. I thought it was Julia before even reading the title.
I just wanna give thanks to everyone and blessed the lives that were lost due to this tragedy! Also thank you Erin for shining the light and giving hope to all human kind! We adore you!
I was witnessing a clean air bus in LA today and knew it was a total sham. Even the cars nearby didn’t have the same wave of exhaust leaving the vehicle. It’s a bus but I was wondering if clean air meant transparent?
Why did you title this "single-mother" Erin Brockvick? She is well know for her efforts in stopping water contamination from big companies. Are you calling out her motherhood and singleness for a reason?
I think it was to show her resilience and strength. As if to say despite her (though position) as a single mother... She was able to investigate the water issue in her time. We all know that single mothers don't have a lot of time as they often busy looking after their children alone. Beside her being a single mother at the time was no lie, let's stop being sensitive.
I'm a single mother and the title is inspirational to me, as I believe it is for many other single mothers. This shouldn't offend you. Are you slow in some way?
I've been reacquainting myself with the movie and facts on Erin Brockovich and holy crap in a handbasket, Batman...NEVER MADE THE CONNECTION!!! PG&E being Pacific Gas and Electric. Wow do they EVER have a lot to answer for!! Practically ALL the destroyed towns from forest fires all the way up the California interior!!
Contrary to MTGs claims, wildfires in CA can be associated to PGE lines, not maintained, still hooked up to redwood trees. Like that. Our power line runs through a dead tan oak, been asking for maintenance here for 3 years.
@Make gulags Great again Lived here all my life. They make lots of money, kill lots of trees cutting from main lines. I think underground should have been done by now! PIGS, GOATS & ELEPHANTS!
RIGHT!? Especially after the 2019/2020 Ca fires... PG&E has been exposed more! Paradise Valley is easily connected to bad power lines and bad maintenance upkeep! I’ve always wondered why I’ve never seen much about PG&E... Keep covering it up!!!!!
As an American citizen, I never dreamed that I would end up in a situation where I would be fighting for my life and freedom from a corporation Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield aka Elevance Health that I had previously worked for. But here I am doing just that.
Too bad they do nothing or say nothing for all the American service members that are stationed at Fort Irwin just miles from this place who are getting sick and getting cancer and no one is speaking up for them !
Well that could be from a number of causes, like depleted uranium munitions or some such thing because as far as I know they stopped treating their lines with C6 over 20 years ago.
I need this woman, I need the water tested here and also the thick grey industrial dust that's in our apartment its in our hair so I'm sure we are breathing it in. I think it's coming from the Styrofoam plant that's located behind us.
I am with others on the constant "single mother" thing that is brought up in every post/youtube video and it drove me nuts in the movie too! Ok great you are a single mother who is smart, took care of her kids and ended up having a great career, I do applaud her for that. Throughout the movie she is constantly trying to make people feel bad because she is the single mom of 3 kids! There are millions of single moms out there taking care of their kids on their own. It's not anyone else's fault that she chose to hookup with losers and she wasn't forced to have any kids. I think she did fantastic work and I love the movie other than the constant single mom thing, I actually own it. It's not something that makes her special though!
@@voiceovers7080 There was a movie made about her. I thought it was about what she did for others, rather than about herself. People are people, right? People do amazing things everyday. It has nothing really to do with their marital status, whether they are rich or poor, what their skin color is or how many children they have. It's about what is in the heart. At least, that is how I see it.
@@V.E.R.O. I don't get what you are trying to say. Are you trying to discredit people? I say this because your "but" word discounts anything I just said.
@@yolonda8965 I'm not discrediting anyone or discounting what you said. I just happen to have a different opinion, everyone does, doesn't mean you're right and I'm wrong or vice versa. You said that what people do "has nothing really to do with their marital status, whether they are rich or poor, what their skin color is or how many children they have. It's about their heart". I happen to have the opinion that what people do and think is affected by the family they were born to, the relationships they form throughout their life, their wealth and in some cases their skin color. I know for a fact I wouldn't be the person I am today if I had been born into a different family.
This sounds like our little town here in trona California Pg&e is what we have here as our gas company We have a chemical plant right in our small town Plus they send us reports on what's supposed to be in the water One is arsenic but supposedly at ok levels We have some people in our town that wants anyone who talks about any problems here to shut they're mouth up 😢
As kids we all had dreams of becoming a doctor, lawyer, actor or singer. Not waking up every day Fighting for your life in the United States of America. This is what I am forced to do.
All I see in any Julia movie is Julia - and certainly NOT if she is portraying a real person. Her new movie Gaslit - Julia is the polar opposite of who she portrays. You can't unsee her and she does not dissolve into her character like a true actress/actor should. She is a celebrity actress. More famous for her beauty and charm that her actual work.
Can anyone tell me why we haven't installed a water pipeline to California and the other drought stricken states from The Great lakes? We have an oil pipeline across Alaska that is capable of delivering 35000 gallons of water per minute? Hello there infrastructure budget should include this
Uuuhh, hold on there Bub!! Those Great Lakes are shared by us, your neighbour to the North, (we're bigger and on top, remember?). You cannot just stick a suction pipe in and turn on a pump, (Nestle already tried that for their bottled water!). Lake Michigan could be an option, but I think Flint should have first dibs, don't you? I have already stated that the entirety of Ontario and Michigan and other northern provinces and U.S. States could be making better use of this natural resource. Leaving southern waterways, tributaries, and groundwater wells to supply those geographic areas. Also, we would have to manage the flow, so said southern tributaries wouldn't be adversely affected by directly using the Great Lakes for northern areas.
I was put in starship after having bial build up they keep telling me I'm fine but if you are in hospital you know something wrong they tryed to cover it up there still trying to fix it and pratend it's fine
Why do you highlight the fact she's a single mother? Erin's name stands on its own. Your highlight is sexist. Her status as a mother or single parent is irrelevant.
@@V.E.R.O. And a hooker..lol why do so many women take up for for strippers and prostitutes..like it was their only option gtfoh. I guess she was pretty at some time.
Tha girl that was my partner in a quinceñiera had toes instead of thumbs and yes I do believe this town did them dirty they ended up getting paid out fr
@@mikederucki I can only assume their aim was to show how much more exceptional her achievements were in spite of her circumstances. I mean there are not many people who would have done what she did, she could have just done her job of file clerk and called it a day. 🤷🏽♀️
They were highlighting the fact that Erin was a very strong woman, doing this while having to raise a child. No need to get all upset about it. Chill is the new cool.
