From my 4 years old to 15 years old Parkinson was a don’t miss program late on a Saturday Night as I was growing up. I’m not sure how many of the earliest ones I can remember but Muhammad Ali (and Emu) made a huge impression on me along with other celebrities of the day. He leaves us with an incredible record of that generation (if the BBC didn’t dispose of the tapes!).

Most of the tapes from the first series in 71 were wiped and lost forever, but then years later a producer from L.A. phoned up Parky and told him he had one there right in front of him on his desk..... it was the one with John and Yoko. It was sent to Parky.

As a journalist he knew how to do a chat show. The shows he did in the 70s can't be bettered. A time when guests didn't always have something to sell. He interviewed a lot of movie stars, Orson Welles, Cagney, Mitchum and many more. I hate to say it but nowadays the guest will have a movie or something to promote and little else will heard from them. And I'm not being old fashioned, but Interviewers are not as good. Parky was the best.

I got to meet Michael Parkinson here in Christchurch, NZ when I was called to give him a therapeutic massage. He was a true gentleman, exactly the same in person as he was on the TV, with his sense of humour, warmth and friendliness. I kept having to ask him to repeat himself whenever he spoke while lying facedown on my massage table, and he quipped, "We need an interpreter!" It was an honour and privilege to have met him, and now he rests in peace. 😇🙏💗

If you like classical music, you will know the story of Johannes Brahms’ final work, the marvellous 4th Symphony. Not well received at first but then, in 1897, Brahms attended a performance in Vienna at which the audience stood up and clapped and cheered him at the end of each movement. He stood up too, a white haired and frail old man, to accept the ovation. He died a few months later. I have related this because it came to my mind on 28 May this year when I was at the Hay Literary Festival in South Wales, where Michael Parkinson and his son Mike were giving a talk to promote the new book they had written together. The tent, by far the largest at the Festival, in which the talk was given, was packed out and everyone was happy to strain to listen to every word uttered by Parky even though his speech was no longer distinct. At the end of the talk the audience stood up, to a man and woman, and clapped and clapped. I have attended many presentations given over the years at the Festival, by many many very well known and highly respected celebrities, but none, so far as I can recall, had received such a reception. I think we all knew, if only subliminally, just as those in the audience 126 years earlier had known with Brahms, that this was the last time we would ever see Parky. I hope very much that he was not one of a kind, and that there will be more like him. But undeniably he was special. I can think of no other interviewer so able to put those he interviewed at such ease, who was clearly liked and trusted by them, and who was regarded by so many as a genuine friend.

Michael Parkinson was unique, whereas so many other chat show hosts like Graham Norton and Jonathan Ross were not in the same league. Michael was really interested in listening to what his guests had to say, and unlike others, didn't have an inflated sense of their own importance!

I recall when ITV started airing Johnny Carson's Tonight Show. Their advertising campaign said "Johnny Carson makes Michael Parkinson look like Michael Parkinson!" and when Michael Parkinson was asked about it he just said "What's that all about?" and didn't say anything else. The Tonight Show flopped in the UK in just a few months while Sir Michael carried on for many more years.

Barely a second ago this eccentric message appeared in the ether. Some light needs to be shed on this mysterious missive. Perhaps a viewer from the Commonwealth could Have a Riesling and play the Ump. "Oh, you mustn't overdo these things, possums. Many of these people, these so called stars that Michael had on his show were non-entities. Some were real stars. They were friends of mine whom I had helped in the past and who needed an appearance on a show. So I mentioned them to Michael, working behind the scenes, putting shows together for him using my connections, taking time out of my busy schedule. I like to help people. It's just the kind of person I am. Every time I was on the show I got exciting reviews, being a megastar. The audience loved me and Michael did too. He was lucky enough to be my guest several times over the years. He told me I was his favourite, my female urges and juices coming out in great gusts. I shared my experiences, always in the strictest confidence. Sadly, all things must end. Thank you for reading me in your homes viewers! Dame E. Everage ".

Parkinson was two things, he was in place at just the right time, and all those stars he interviewed were still around. So we had some extraordinary insights and moments, with Peter Sellers, Billy Connolly, Muhammed Ali and so many others. However, he was one other much more important thing, a listener. And 95% of the time, that drew the interviewee out and gave us those magic moments. Now the interviewers just talk interminable shite 95% of the time and don't let their interviewee get a look in.

He certainly had his share of good times with his interviewees. I regret one of his failures - the interview with John Wayne who had a life in cinema dating back almost to the silent era and who could surely have provided much interest about his life and those he met and starred with in film. Instead, "Parky" seemed determined to focus on "Duke" Wayne's right wing political views and a great opportunity was missed. The nearest competitor to Parkinson was surely the multi-talented Clive James. Also sadly gone from us.
