Ebert "died" when he had surgery and lost his speech, and was resuscitated with the electric pads (he wrote about it in this blog). It is eerie to hear him speak about something that would happen for real to him decades later.

@sha11235
@sha11235 6 лет назад
No, what happened was the X rating was changed to NC-17 that very fall (1990) to erase the stain of the X. Now, that was a step in the correct direction, the problem was that everyone ran away from it. If newspapers had allowed to advertise NC-17 films, theaters been allowed by their leases to show NC-17 films, and big studios allowed directors to make NC-17 films, it would've been okay. But they didn't do that.

personally i dont care about ratings, when i was growing up in the 70s and 80s my father literally let me watch anything i wanted i still sort of marvel at the idea that watching some make believe film can cause harm in some way or other to children of certain ages. that said i completely agree with that idea of an A rating, to be able to make a film that is rated adults only but without having some stigma hanging over its head that its going to be lurid or perverse.

Spot on!! I thought exactly the same thing the first time I saw it. To take a truly imaginative concept and turn it into a simple morality tale was disappointing to say the least. Well, if you are going to remake a film, never remake a masterpiece. Remaking Flatliners is okay because it wasn't the biggest thing.

'It's very nice for Roger Ebert to decide what are acceptable standards to write about when it comes to the hereafter. Write your own version of Flatliners if you think you can do better, Roger.

@@davidmitchell6873 , LOL! What sad part of the world are you trolling from, my sad simple little troll doll? An old Siskel and Ebert review clip is a very strange place to be trolling on, my simple friend. Are you really that drunk, or that simple? Or is it both? My sympathies to your mother, poor woman.

The Two Jakes is an awful movie.

Maybe that's why it sank like a damn rock at the box office. I remember when it came out and Gene and Roger praised it, yet I saw many other critics didn't and the public rejected it on opening weekend.

Talk about overrated. Not a thing they said about The Two Jakes ever held water. Not even in the era the film was released, and certainly not today. That movie was a failure for multiple reasons.

I've always heard it was bad so I just wrote it off. I liked the original so much that I didn't want to tarnish it by watching a botched sequel. I'm tempted now that I've seen this review... I don't know what to do, ha ha.

TheWholeYearInn It really has nothing to do with Chinatown, other than the same character. At least I can't remember it ruining the character. It wasn't worth me remembering obviously, so I'm going to check it out again. It's far from a Chinatown level picture though, I remember that.

Teenagers do the same things at the same time all over the country. I remember in high school I couldn’t wait to go somewhere else where kids didn’t just drag the streets, so I went to my aunts in Las Vegas, and she let me drive her car and guess what the kids were doing in downtown Vegas. DRAGGING THE DAMN STREET LOL 😅
