Yeah, too bad that website this was taken from was taken down because the guy couldn't afford to run it. There are so many full length episodes not only from this version of the show, but the earlier incarnations, so you get to see older episodes.
@@sha11235 I'm sure people would help financially but the guy doesn't have the technical knowledge I think. There was another guy who did all the website running stuff but he left. The site worked for a couple months but then broke and eventually the domain went up for sale.
The more of these I watch the more I see Ebert was on the money on the films that became classics. Siskel missed the boat entirely on Field of a Dreams. Wow.
Love how Ebert cracks up 16:15, trying to recover from Siskel's incessant bitching about She's Out of Control....almost worthy of the blooper reel.....
I related to Say Anything. The same year it was released in 1989 i graduated from high school, like the characters in the film. The soundtrack was ahead of it's time featuring Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone & Red Hot Chili Peppers. Bands i discovered b/c of this film & they would dominate my playlist into the 1990's
I recently re-watched Say Anything. I really identify with the movie because I'm a Generation Xer. Its a wonderful romantic comedy. One of the reasons why the movie is so good is because its plot is non-cliched and the characters are interesting. Siskel and Ebert are spot on here.
seeingsights Absolutely. After seeing John Cusack in his first-ever adult role the year before in the period baseball piece EIGHT MEN OUT (1988), I was surprised to see him go back to a teenaged role in 1989's SAY ANYTHING. I was initially skeptical, although the trailer made the film seem like it would be good. Well, I saw the film and I *loved* it. It was smart, funny, realistic, non-superficial, and had a real story about real people about whom I got to know and cared. 10/10
@@harlowrioux5790 really? name 5 well-known movies with that setup. But it's not even accurate. She is characterized as the smartest girl in school, not the prettiest.
What was interesting was that Cusack went back to a smart teen comedy, not like the ones he did like Better off Dead. To him, he felt this was the anti-BOD. Then he went on to more adult roles.
@@harlowrioux5790 you are correct, thankfully that isn't what say anything is about. It was a kinda of interesting twist making her a nerd who had spent all of of high school studying and the boy was the more popular one who brought her to parties where he knew everyone and was comfortable and she was the awkward one.
Heartless people is all I can think. I completely agree with their edosement for Say Anything. Its a very mature teen drama which works for adults too. She's out of Control looks the pits.
Field of dreams was so special The ending makes u cry & in a way it's not about baseball but a connection between father & son the speeh jones gives about how Americana baseball is , just chills
Great episode. It has a movie they both love, one they both hate, and one they disagree on. It's best when they strongly disagree on a movie or if there's a movie that one of them hates.
When Burt Lancaster crosses the chalk to help the little girl in Field of Dream and leaves through the corn...😫😫😫😫😫😫 C'mon Gene! Such a hardass. But he's right - you either buy in or not. I totally love this one.
Another Siskel & Ebert episode, another week of amazing films in the 80’s: Say Anything, Field of Dreams, Dead Calm-heck I even liked She’s Out of Control, when I saw it, of course I was its intended audience, a teenager!! Another thing I always find out when I watch these, is how many bad films were made that I have no recollection of, and I’ve never seen! Proof that really bad movies really do disappear into thin air. Case in point here, Kurt Russell in the prime of his career starred in a film with Kelly McGillis called Winter People??? I’ve NEVER heard of this movie, and it played theaters?? Wow!! Like I said, this happens often watching these old S& E’s in retrospect!!
58 year old lawyer that played baseball through my second year of college. I cried even at just this review. Baseball is special and I feel for the current generation, which is increasingly detached from the game.
Entire She’s Out of Control convo was hilarious, and heartwarming. Even though S&E don’t talk in detail about the abhorrent sexual politics of that film, they cover it in a gentlemanly way by their sheer revulsion. Gallant, those two. And a nice moment of them enjoying cracking each other up.
It's interesting that you'd mention that. Gene Siskel also give a "thumbs down" to the basketball movie "Hoosiers." In my opinion, his two biggest mistakes as a critic were Field of Dreams and Hoosiers. What he didn't like about Hoosiers was that it was yet another sports movie that ended with "the big game."
I forget the movie but they once said a movie would win the popcorn growers of America prize because it was so bad people would go out to buy popcorn instead lol.
I really didn't get Field Of Dreams at all. My dad was really moved by it, he grew up with baseball. I LIKE baseball, but I never developed any kind of LOVE of the game.
Field of Dreams is one of the greatest movies ever. If you don't cry at "Dad? Wanna have a catch?" you have no soul. Gene is the wrongest WRONG of the WRONG WRONG WRONG it is possible to be
I've been watching a lot of these old clips lately and it's become quite enjoyable to watch how wrong he is. Sometimes it's some minor flaw in the movie which Siskel then blows up and then ends up torpedoing the whole movie. I think I just identify with Roger's review philosophy more.
Gosh, that was one heck of a week for film! Discounting Winter People and She's Out of Control, Three films that really stand the test of time. A bit disappointed that Siskel didn't like Say Anything.
in case you're wondering, that IS about as riled-up and deeply scornful as Siskel & Ebert get on _She's Out of Control_ starting around 12:00. at least definitely Roger, anyway. his tirade is intense. i've never seen him THAT offended by a movie. not even _Stop or My Mom Will Shoot._ not even _North!_
As with a lot of Gene Siskel's reviews for films we now consider beloved classics, history tends to fall on the side of Roger Ebert. To say "It's not a bad picture." about 'Field of Dreams' only exemplifies how stiff Siskel was and how, most of the time, he failed to recognize a wonderful film when he saw one.
Waterworld tried too hard. Field of Dreams was effortless by comparison. If Siskel had lived long enough, at least he would have appreciated the game of the MLB regular season played at the filming location of the movie.
I can't believe Siskle doesn't like "Field of Dreams." Yeah, Bull Durham is good, but it is a different type of film. Abd you don't cry at the end of Bull Durhsm. Also, Gabby Hoffman lived at the Hotel Chelsea. And the James Earl Jones character is really supposed to be J.D. Salinger.
Famous film critic Pauline Kael trashed "Field of Dreams," but at bottom, as Kevin Costner said, we all have regrets, things we wish could be made right but can't. This movie is about, what if, for once , they could?
Winter People wasn't meant to be a comedy by any means and yet I was laughing uncontrollably throughout the movie. The funniest sequence in the movie involves a black bear. Gotta love how Kurt Russell wrestles that thing to the ground like it's some kind of WWE fight, and that stupid clock the town makes to mark the occasion had me howling.
I have to dissent - Field of Dreams made a huge splash but it has not held up well. Many of the scenes fall flat, especially when James Earl Jones is absent. Ebert was a wonderful critic but Siskel demanded more from movies.
Some people don't like the metaphor of the bridge to heaven(or the afterlife) being a baseball field. I've heard religious, and non religious people state this same thing. I saw it in the cinema when I was 11 years old, so it was magic for me. It's changed as I grew up, but it still has a great feel to it. I also love baseball, so I'm biased.
CorbCorbin Oh baseball is a fantasy for most kids that play it. And if you didn't you might not get it at all. I can see that. I loved it like the Natural.
That's the strength of this show, and the brilliance of teaming these two very different critics. Ebert was swept away by its whimsical, spiritual, magical fantasy, Siskel was not - but both presented thoughtful, respectful critiques. I loved this show because it featured two smart, thoughtful people who were different in many ways but who both loved film and knew how to talk (and sometimes disagree) about it in a civilized way. Two smart people talking with each other on television, something we don't get much these days.
Laughing Gravy Not only on TV but anywhere else nowadays. Especially on the internet! I have never been able to understand why some people are so hateful and talking like they want to kill someone? I know most of them would ever be that way in person so why here?! I had a theory that they were bullied in school and it gives them a format to lash out without repercussions so they let people have it. Hahahaha lols 😂
I disagree with if nothing happens in the first reel nothing's going to happen two movies blew me away at the end even though I was bored to the entire movie Dirty Dancing the dancing at the end which incredible and it made the whole movie for me and The Sixth Sense I was so bored it didn't know what was going on but the ending put it all together so sometimes you have to sit through the whole movie to get a good result
@@sha11235 now that I think about it you're right Sixth Sense had a great opening I was just thinking that after he died nothing made sense because he was basically a ghost so you're absolutely right about that I forgot that the beginning was so good Dirty Dancing I don't know maybe because I didn't want to see it and the girl I was dating at the time did so I thought I was going to have a horrible time LOL
these two gave thumbs down on Ghostbusters 2 I explained to Ernie Hudson on how the sequel lampooned advertising back in the day with the minx fur coat and statue of liberty gag .Frankie Croft Smales
Ty Cobb was one of Gene’s heroes? He wasn’t AS mean and ornery as he’s historically portrayed but he was still those things and definitely no hero. He was certainly no Lou Gehrig or Roberto Clemente. Those were heroes.
These episodes show Siskel was terrible... he repeatedly gives thumbs down to what are now recognized as very good or great movies ...panning Field of Dreams ??!
Usually I agree with Gene but he's so far off base on this a little league pitcher could pick him off. No the voice never said it was Jackson coming back. It was his father all along.
Siskel & Ebert could be elitist when they wanted to be. You just never knew. What was "good" or "inspired" writing was so subjective. You liking a style of writing doesn't make it true to life. So much of their ratings were based on if they liked that style vs it objectively being good or bad.
Bull Durham? Gene just proved that he never played baseball and he doesn't realize that baseball is a fantasy for every kid that is a baseball player and they lay in bed dreaming about hitting that game winning home run. To bad Gene you missed out in your life.
Ricardo Cantoral Well that’s not really the point I was making, baseball is a fantasy for a lot of kids, and they dream of being big time players hitting the game winning home run and that’s what this movie is, a fantasy a kid had about his father and Shoeless Joe Jackson. But I understand why you said it. Some people don’t like a lot of movies I think are good and the opposite.
I liked FOD but I understand why Siskel might not have done so. He's right - you either have to buy into the premise whole hog or it's not quite easy to invest in as a movie goer. He simply didn't buy into the premise.
Field of dreams i thought was boring and too hokey .Kevin Costner is a flat toned actor for me.The baseball movie or one of them i think is League of there old.tom hanks is much better actor then Costner....
Oh Gene! How can you say nice things about "Bull Durham," a lousy movie in every way, and actually prefer it to "Field Of Dreams." BD is an embarrassment and FOD is absolutely magical.
