Hey Kyler, I'm curious about all the outdoor activities. I got a hold of you a few weeks back about my wife and I relocating to Bozeman. We'll be there in October and I'm just curious about the fishing, hiking and hunting in bear country. We are big on outdoor activities, but coming from the state of Oregon where we only have black bears and cougars to worry about, (which for the most part avoid us humans) I'm really curious to know what you guys do to avoid encounters with brown bears in general. Does it keep you on edge knowing that you're sharing the outdoors with the largest apex predators in the country?

Honestly, I have been out in the back country my whole life and have had bear encounters from the time I was a kid, so it just seems normal. I don't think about it too much. If I am going into the back country I pack bear spray and a gun. Even a Griz prefers to avoid people. Hike and camp in groups if possible. Make noise and let them hear you coming. Attacks normally happen because they are surprised or you are in-between the mom and a cub. There is a good class in Bozeman about surviving the Griz of you are interested in that.

Thanks Kyler. Yeah we never worry too much about black bears or cougars because they're always just elusive and avoiding human contact. I appreciate the great info. 👍

Griz are more bold and less afraid then a black bear but they aren't looking to hunt people. They are more of a scavenger by nature.
