One thing that could be misleading in the video, is that in order to pick specific clans battleline not only the general has to be either masterclan or that clan, but ALL other unit HAVE to be from that clan too. That is an incredible limitation to the options that are actually available to us. We might have a ton of potential battlelines to choose from... But they are insanely difficult to make them work. Otherwise, great video!! Looking forward to seeing more skaven things! :)
I think the main thing holding acolytes back from seeing more play isn’t so much an “ugly” model… it think that it ends up costing $75 usd for 65 points…
Mantic Games Veer-Myn Nightcrawlers, my dude; $25 for 20 ratmen with acid super soakers! Scruff them up a bit, an old-fashioned paint job, and we will show-show them! We will show-show them all! Nyahahahahahaha!!!
Great report there mate, There are just a few things I don’t quite agree with you. Clanrats: Their most effectively used unit sizes are 20 and 60. 20 clanrats are able to be used as a cheap cannon fodder unit, while loosing them isn’t going to hurt your army as much as a unit of 40 clanrats in a single round, since a good amount of units are able to deal 41-56damage. 60is a good size for clanrats, if your trying to hold an objective and be able to survive more then one combat phase with the unit, they are also the perfect target for your hidden weapon teams. Stormvermins: They have currently become a better cannon fodder unit than clanrats, since their price difference of 20 points often means, that you’ll very likely see 1-2 units of stormvermins protecting that huge unit of 60clanrats, which is kinda funny considering that they should be the elite horde unit of clans verminus. Currently their most efficient unit size is 10, not for their damage potential, but because they are the cheapest battle line option skaven have. Of course 30 is a pretty stable size for stormvermins, they have a hard time getting their calue out of their points with their current size limitations, since they almost always will loose their horde allegiance bonus immediately. Unit size of 20 are not recommended. Skryre acolyte: Amazing meatshield option in a clans skryre army, and that is mostly it. It is true that a unit of 15 skryre acolytes can deal a good amount of damage, yet they also die extremely quickly, I would not recommend using them as a damage dealer. Consider them as cannon fodder with some damage bonuses. Stormfiends: I personally don’t quite often use them, since I’m more of a doomwheels guy, yet taking Stormfiends in units of 6 or 9 (in a clans skryre army), can have huge potential. Stormfiends, are one of the best ranged damage dealers, with a few buffs like mmmwp, and the extra added damage through the warpspark. A unit of 6 or 9 will be able to obliterate basically most targeted units in a single phase, and is something many-many (boring) skavenplayers have been using in the tournaments in the third edition (and with many I mean the few who took part at an event). Plague monks: I’m very sorry for any plague monks fanatically faithfuls out there, yet with the save changes and their size having state at ten, they are currently not considered a worthwhile option in a mixed skaven list. It is true that the amount of dice you role for a unit of 20 plague monks is amazingly high, and with a priest using curse this could also be okish to at some points maybe even great, they have lost not only the change to really use their allegiance rules efficiently, since 1 model already means that they would loose all those bonuses, but their chance to be kept alive is even harder and currently not worth the struggle. Plague censer bearers: Don’t know what to say about them. They aren’t really cheap, and their damage efficiency is worse then that of plague monks. I guess a good chance of doing some mortal wounds and for any lore fanatics, they can be a pretty great option for having a few others units than just plague monks in a pestilence army. Night runners: I fully agree with you there. Gutter runners: I’m not certain about the 15rat unit of gutter runners, but considering the eshin part of the allegiance abilities, a unit of 15 gutter runners could do a good amount of damage against a bigger hero being headhunted by clan eshin. So I guess I mostly agree with you there as well. Anyways this are my thoughts. If you guys disagree or agree, I’ll happily hear you guys out.
I forgot to add that giant rats are currently the best meatshield unit in the whole book. 40points for 6models is amazing especially if your just intereted in throwing out the cheapest units multiple time as an army stopper. Works amazingly against any army. They also pretty great throw away units, if you need something that can take the unleash hell of a charge for another unit.
Im going to be honest, Storm fiends are not really worth it. 315 points for 3 models that also hit on 4s for literally everything except for doomflayer gauntlets. Also wind launchers are really the only good gun for them. For their points you can really use better things imo. Take 1 unit that would be ok but more than that their point cost is just too damn high. They used to be 260 points in 2nd and FAQ to 290 during the broken realms era. 315 is just soo much for hitting on 4s and only having 1 really good gun. Love their looks though best looking skaven models along with the hellpit abomination.
For an unsupported unit of 3 stormfiends I'd say your right. But stormfiends are absolutely terrifying in units of 6 with an arch warlock nearby to give them +1 damage and more-more-more warp power to let them re-roll hit rolls and wound-rolls. Especially the ratling cannons and windlaunchers get extremely powerful in that case.
Since been a couple of years since this video was made, I want to point out that Skaven now just have "Have a Hero of (insert clan the battle line is a part of) in your army."
Hey great video! A few things though. You should really go over moulder mutations with the rat ogors. Insanely rabid rogors in 4-6s are great hammers and the Toughened sinews version makes a fantastic anvil and boosts their scoring capabilities. Also, Giant Rats are extremely useful screens. A unit of 20 clanrats can easily be wiped in one combat unless they are screened. They can also be used to absorb unleash hell or zone out deepstrike. I find myself taking a unit or two of them over an extra Endless spell.
Thanks for the video. I don’t like Skaven, but I don’t know why. I like the concept, I like most of the models, but for some reason I really don’t like the faction.
As someone who has collected for a few years but never played, this is exactly the video I needed to try and get my Skaven playing in AoS 3.0! Is there any way you could share the Powerpoint you used for this video? It would be really handy to print and reference to while I'm trying to learn :)
About the Giant Rats battleline. They can be surprisingly effective if they make up almost your entire army in minimum size units. At just 40 pts for six models you can afford to bring 30 units of them plus 3 master Moulders. 3 rat swarms and 3 units of packmasters. It words out to like 240+ wounds between 42 units. That kind of mass is nearly impossible for most armies to beat off objectives. And the list doesn’t give up many secondaries. It’s a cheeky meme list but it wins. Give your general Hordemaster and for 1cp the unit comes back on a 4+ when killed.
That’s definitely an interesting idea! I was analyzing the giant rats in a combined arms or more “standard” army. But I can definitely see how the giant rats can be made to work.
@@WargroveofWoe I play moulder, and giant rats are dirt cheap. they get overkilled, but when a 200pt unit wastes a combat phase only killing a 40pt unit, and you have 19 more of them it really wears down the enemy.
Can you run clan rats and storm vermin in a skryre list? And is it possible to mix and match clans at all in a list? I'm new to age of sigma and all this talk of battle lines is hurting my brain 😂
clan rats vs storm vermin which do people recommend. currently looking at like 10 stormvermin for every 20 clan rats. or something like that also when was the last time they updated the model on both =/
@@taintedchungus k. currently my list looks like. 1 clawlord, 1 arch-warlock 2 squads of 20 clan rats 1 squad of 10 stormvermin 1 warpfire thrower 2 doom-flayers 1 warp lightning cannon and 2 units of 3 warplock jezzails. any advice?
@@Nyxcha in general you want to run 20 stormvermin. They survive better than clanrats, but not much and skaven shields only work if the unit is 10 or more so 1 death and they're saving on 5+ instead of 4+. I typically go for warplighting cannons over jezzales. They're excellent anti-hero weapons, though jezzales aren't bad. Clawlords are underwhelming now that so many things are capable of getting a 2+ save. You're better saving points and bringing a warlock engineer so that your arch warlock isn't tied to you cannons. It also makes the unit you've hidden your weapons teams in less obvious. I actually run an arch warlock, grey seer, warlock engineer and sometimes a plague priest depending on my build. (For 85 points the plague priest on foot is a decent buffing unit with the curse prayer)
Thanks for this overview, just the models are a mess for me. So many old models are really not that good looking anymore, and then you have some newer ones like the stormfiends. They just don't fit together very well.
