I feel bad for them really, everyone took it the wrong way, they were supposed to poke fun at wannabe gangster types, but most didn't see them as caricature's and took the stereotype literal.
The thing I love about the official masterpiece is that it only came into existence because it was riding the 40th anniversary of the honda city turbo itself. Skids got an MP-tier toy because he happened to turn into a vehicle Japanese people fondly regard, not because he was deemed important or liked enough. Damn good toy, mind you.
Fun fact: Because Skids came out between the '84 and '85 waves, Hasbro didn't bother to send Sunbow's writers a bio for him. They didn't include him in either the original batch of bios, or the second one. Seriously, Skids isn't mentioned ANYWHERE in the original production bible. And because he missed the first wave, he also didn't get to appear in the commercials. And this is why Skids's few appearances in the cartoon feel almost like an accident; they kind of were.
@@dudunikolaishvili8096 Sorta, yeah. See, the first wave of G1 toys were meant to include twelve unique toys--but, for one reason or another, it only contained eleven, with the position of the twelfth being filled by a second Mirage toy. It's believed that the twelfth was supposed to have been Grapple, hence his very brief appearance in the pilot (which later got renamed to Hauler). And at some point in very late 1984, they decided to replace the second Mirage in the case with Skids. Why didn't they just use Skids to begin with, or just keep Grapple in the first wave? I dunno.
"Skids is a theoretician. This is appropriate, as some would say his existence is merely theoretical; everyone forgets who he is or that he was there."
I always loved Skids. Someone showed up on the school bus with him and no one had heard of him. Blew our little 8 year old minds. To me he is kind of the quintessential Autobot.
Same, still have it though, and still love it :D probably my favorite alternator together with ravage :) I think alternators/binaltech/alternity were pretty great lines in general. Id say arcee and windcharger kinda suck :') but even they have their charm imho.
@@ApenBaard I still have the Petter Solberg livery Smokescreen on my shelf of awesome! lol I wonder if we'd ever gotten MP figures if it weren't for alternators/binaltech. In hindsight they seem kind of the proto-line before we got the early alt mode accurate MP figures.
@@ApenBaard I agree. I currently have windcharger and I keep him in vehicle mode since his leg poseability is appalling. As it currently looks the one with the best poseability.
I wound up the US Alternator's release of Skids, but I did pick up the Binaltech Asterisk version of the mold in silver who I think was supposed to be Blaster...it's been a minute since I had the packaging out.
Skids, the Autobot Crankcase Blue SUV G1 toy that rarely shows up, has a terrible slobbering movie version, and never really shows up and when he does it never in the spotlight Also has Thew as their #1 fan
As far as narrative structure goes this actually kind of makes him the big hero of the story. What if Skids is the secret central protagonist of the transformers universe?
And the IDW comics the fact Nautica had her feelings for him removed wound up being an important plot point that saves everyone seems like an indignity. "Yes, Skids, the fact no one loves you wound up being a good thing." He is a favorite of mine I had the G1 toy back in the day. I liked how the tires folded up under his feet and the multiple weapons. He was treated so well in the beginning of IDW, making use of his super-learning ability and had a good explanation of his amnesia trope. Then gave him trauma so bad it literally killed him.
But hey, at least he will never be forgotten by comic readers. That's one of my favourite rhings about MTMTE, that they brought obscure characters to the forefront.
But even HOIST got a new figure, recently. It's not my cup of tea, personally, but for people that love Hoist it's as accurate to the original, to a fault in one, or two areas, but still satisfied his fans. So Skids is just that much lower on the pole because of that. Even if he never gets another toy again, he at least deserves one good, respectful, and of course crowd-pleasing figure as his final sendoff. Hell, they could even get away with reusing some parts from Earthrise Prowl, some of the them could easily be used, or reworked for Skids with a few modifications to get the details like the wheel shoulders, the car torso, and even take advantage of the extra storage space for the van-esque mode to make the legs, arms, and feet work even better. IT's not impossible, ESPECIALLY not for the wizards behind Earthrise, almost everything they've touched has been gold, and even Studio Series is getting amazing lose for the 86 movie.
@@ToaKoran Yeah, not to be a downer, but that hoist figure unironically stiiiiiiiinks. I have to clarify that because I initially gave him a glowing review earlier this year, but upon a second look in a collab video, he's not good in the slightest. I think we need a new skids.
Does Armada Sideswipe/ Micron Legend Stepper with his low status among Autobbots, blue colour and ability to store a tiny motorcycle seem a bit like Skids or is that too cruel?
@@thomasjames8009 Ya know I've NEVER realized this before; I always thought he was based on Nightbeat and Jazz's head but lost his name to his partner but somehow after you say this I'm baffled that neither Hasbro nor Takara DID name him Skids. And as much as nearly no one liked or cared for that character that STILL would have actually been a boost for Skids.
I approve of the increase of the term "dipshit". it has been my go-to nonspecific insult for years and finally it's becoming more mainstream, it just rolls off the tongue so perfectly and really, it's such a perfect term for anyone you're probably referring to with it
Fun Fact: That little scooter that X Transbots Savant comes with was actually a real thing that Honda manufactured. It was called the Motocompo and was specifically designed to collapse into a small rectangle to fit into the boot of the Honda City, earning the name "Trunk Bike".
@@TheSmart-CasualGamer I can't remember when I read it exactly, but someone was selling off one of the last working models and I think the car as well. The photos with the seller were interesting.
Just saying, but in IDW, Megatron got a depression because he and Skids were pretty close And Rodimus would become a lot less punkish because of his death
I hated how IDW killed Skids and treated him after death. Cause the guy was my favorite character in MTMTE, period. Idk why, I just really really liked him.
@@gavo7911 I mean, I understand that. I'm mostly mad about how they treated him after his death, what with Nautica having her emotions related to him erased. That was my biggest grievance.
I'm just glad I never really got into the IDW comics. I hate it when a story starts off strong then flops onto its face later on. Writers change, nobody knows how to keep the story going without ruining it, real life agendas are inserted, and it all falls apart. Better to end a story while it's still good then keep it going past the point that it starts to suck.
Man, Skids sure is the most easily forgettable Transformer from G1 but he's a classic toy. Just a nice pure transformer. Him and Tracks were the two I've always thought deserved a bit better. Although Tracks has had more rep in general over the years. You've done a good thing here Thew. Ensuring we cannot forget the blu boxy boi.
It's weird because Tracks actually stood out to me more than Sunstreaker despite both having the same high opinion of their appearance (I think? I don't even remember that about Streaker but everyone else does). Tracks def deserves to be remembered more.
@@ChouRaiyuki Sunstreaker basically did nothing of note in the G1 cartoon (putting him in a similar category to a lot of '84 guys). Tracks got a couple of focus episodes to himself, which Sunstreaker never did. It really just comes down to Sunstreaker coming first and being Sideswipe's brother, since Sideswipe is the other G1 character to be inexplicably well-remembered despite doing nothing of note.
well thankfully tracks seems to be getting some attention in the new Kingdom line as shown in the teaser poster. Not much luck for skids yet unfortunately.
Ok, I know there's like 17 minutes left in the video. BUT TRANSFORMERS CAN SCAN GHOSTS AND GET HAUNTED BY THEM!?!?!?!? WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN AND WHHHYYY????!
It’s more like an accidental DNA scan when Skid-Z ended up scanning the deceased driver’s helmet and picture along with the car. Thus, giving him that racing obsession and drive-to-win(literally, I guess) personality he’s “possessed” with in the episode.
What did it mean that Black Convoy (Scourge) scanned a truck with Junko inside? Did any of her bad luck rub off on him? Can he produce a replica of her as his fake driver?
Love me some Skids. He's one of the VERY few non-Prime Autobots to get his own solo comic in the G1 days, and while it's arguable that he didn't even do much in that, it was still kind of nice to see an Autobot have a crisis of courage and be honest about it.
that "minicon" thing, was called Centuritron (century + tron), part of the "minicon assault team", consisting of Windshear (helicopter), Runway (jet), and Heavytread (tank).
Back in the early 80's on a family vacation my grandfather let me get one TF at Walmart (or Wal-Mart at the time) and of all first and second years on the shelf I picked Skids because I had no idea who he was. And he's been a favorite ever since.
Can we get a movie about Sky Lynx and Skids going on a big ol road trip through cybertron while chasing Battletrap and Apeface across the planet Transformers: Age of the Nobodies
January 2018 Thew: I wish Hasbro gave us an impactor December 2018 Impactor announced (cause thew rallied us to vote for impactor n mirage) later revealed on toyfair 2019. October 2020 Thew : Hasbro I want a deluxe skids NOW!!! June 2021 Generation selects Deluxe skids announced.
Fingers crossed Thew says that he wants a new deluxe Death's Head figure soon then, yes...?! (Probably won't ever happen because of the copyright shenanigans that would have to be hurdled between Marvel and Hasbro, but a chap can dream, yes...?)
Just had an amazing dream A voyager class Skids was announced for studio series. He had articulated hands, no empty bits, cool weapons, great articulation and most importantly he came with a little bike with a holographic rider.
@@ArtzzyKid good dream but you know if it's Studio Series.. it'll be... that other... "Skids"... it'd be nice to have a real one throw a lot of homages to the Diaclone one. I think Hasbro has forgotten about him, Gears/Swerve, the other targetmasters and Autobot powermasters, Blaster's cassettes, Overkill, Slugfest, and Squawkbox...
"Skids is a theoretician. This is appropriate, as some would say his existence is merely theoretical; everyone forgets who he is or that he was there. But if they got to know him, they'd learn that he likes to daydream, get built into furniture, and pick up cowboy chicks."
Skids was the forgotten autobot for me as a kid, I had him at Christmas 84, I wanted to keep him in the box as the whole look of the product and packaging looks so dope, then when we moved house a lot of stuff got lost somewhere in transit between storage and the new place and Skids being Skids banished into oblivion , sad story really, he never even got out of his box
26:56 Did I just see a bunch of Autobots staring at the ashes that were once Skids, and then one of them says "Skids?" Like yeah, the smoking pile of dirt is going to respond.
4:47 Im sure nobody cares but my car guy soul compels me to mention that Wheeljack's alt mode is a 1976 Lancia Stratos Turbo Alitalia. One of the best looking rally cars ever made. 😄
@@zafool4997 yes exactly. Although Exhaust has the Marlboro livery instead of the Alitalia one. Not that the figure says Marlboro because you can't advertise cigarettes to kids
Somehow, despite the fact that I sent you that QTF Skids and the fact that you REMINDED me of that fact like a week ago, I was totally blindsided by him showing up here. Love that little guy!
A favourite obscure character of mine was Backstreet, as much as he’s never had a toy since 1988 and been ignored just like almost all other characters after 1987. His design with shoulder mounted launchers and an odd colour scheme of orange and green made it easy to love. Maybe one day the 1988 lot will receive the same Hasbro love as the previous years characters.
All of us already know about the Masterpiece and the Legacy Deluxe class by now, there's no surprises there. But just watching this video in late 2021 and knowing that not only 1, but 2 proper G1 Skids figures are on the horizon, feels like some kind of triumphant poetic justice.
One of the funny things about Skids is that with an 8, he was the highest ranking Autobot released in 1985. As the Theoritician, he should have been Perceptor's boss.
@@zafool4997 Yes, I'm well aware of that, and that makes me very happy indeed for Skids. :) Well, hopefully Kingdom at-least, because there isn't yet a vehicle mode quite like his to be repainted for the Selects line anyway. Or, if not for either one, then hopefully sometime in the future.
i love skids. i love him and his relationship with nautica in the comics was adorable and heartbreaking his placeholder status in G1 was fine for me since not me every character needs to be fleshed out for me to get there toy but i mean cmon hasbro youve been deep diving since the prime wars and this guy is still at the bottom of the barrel. and besides if he's not mrketable to the avarage fan then market it to the comic nerds like i and others and please let my boy get his comeback
Didn't IDW Skids have a mental breakdown and collapse into depression because he remembered that smelting pool scene? I mean...that was pretty horrible, I can't blame him. Not having remembered his past would have been a blessing. :-S Damnit, Tarn...
There is one thing about the Bayformers that I love is the amount of detail in the transformation sequences, you pretty much see every panel, gear and piston moving around as they go from one form to another, giving a sense of the extremely complex machinery and detail that has to be going on for a robotic race capable of changing their shape
I still want to believe that thew is the reason skids got his masterpiece and his legacy figure This review is dedicated to the forgotten son of G1 and it was up to one of my favorite people on the internet to bring him back to prominence
I’m hoping for the next generations line, they either do a whole 10th anniversary line for the entire aligned continuity, or redoing the combiner with the built in hands and feet similar to MMC Assultus (and of course, no scramble city combiner thing)
Everybody is always praising all those Steamed Hams remakes, but noboby seems to appreciate Thew's rendition of "Am I so out of touch" at the end of the video.
This is literally the most entertaining RU-vid video I've seen in so long. I didnt give a shit about skids before this video and now I love him. Thanks for the fantastic video
Skids is amazong in idw at least. Poor guy. I love his Nautica interactions and love. But i thonk you were a little too hard on what happened. They were all so fuckrd up about his death they were taking emotion dappening drugs. Nautica iirc still has her memories just not the feelings
