Stretch marks happen when the skin is tested past it’s normal capacity and has to do with the amount of collagen and elastin you produce. It all comes down to skin type some people get them some people don’t but you can’t prevent them with products or make them non existent. Cellulite is caused by fat there isn’t anything you can actually do to your skin to get rid of cellulite you need to exercise to reduce the fat, but you might still have it where your body stores it’s fat regardless of being overweight or not.

Thank you for recommendations, have been using an OTC Retinol for about 6 to 10 months now (about to 7 nights weekly). Could you make a video to clarify a good general guide to when and where in a routine would other actives be beneficial in regards to retinoids (vitamin C, lower strength acid AHA/BHA, lower strength azaleic acid) once someone has been using a retinoid without issue?

@@shantellhall1577 IMHO if you are using retinol nightly without reaction I would move up to retinal and slowly build up to six or seven nights a week then going slowly move up to Tretinoin (the gold standard) for five to seven night a week before thinking of adding anything else.

Is CeraVe moisturizer good for oily skin? Is has cetearyl alcohol, cetyl alcohol, cetrareth-20.
@chandracox6814
@chandracox6814 3 года назад
@@ireneshaffer914 yes it's great for oily skin. The moisturizer not the cream. Don't be put off by thise kinds of alcohols in the ingridients list. The kind of alcohols you mentioned are called fatty alcohols and provide hydration and act as a stabilizer to the formula. There are bad types of alcohols that should be avoided but these are not them. I recommend looking up alcohol in skincare and the difference between the good and bad alcohol. Cerave has great formulations and the moisturizer is great for those with oily skin while the cream is great for those w dry skin.

Thanks for the video Shereene! ❤️ I noted that you said that buffering a retinol by applying moisturiser first decreases the potential for irritation but in doing so it decreases the efficacy of the retinol. Another well known derm on RU-vid preaches the opposite - that being, that applying moisturiser first does not compromise the efficacy/absorption of the retinol. Do you have any further info on this/references on this topic?

Great video, thank you! I was always terrified of starting a retinoid, but with my dermatologists advice I went straight from nothing to nightly 0.025% tretinoin (edited for accuracy, I realised it was 0 025%, not 0.05% that I said before!) and my skin care friends looked at me like I was crazy! From all the skincare articles I've seen online I would have thought this wasn't possible, but I experienced no such "purge" or any adjustment period (beyond some very mild pinkness for the first few days), and instantly better skin, my acne improved and is almost completely gone after just one month. Keep up the great work, I love seeing more scientists and dermatologists put out information online alongside the huge amounts of misinformation that can easily spread : )

Dr. Idriss, I'm so glad RU-vid suggested your videos to me. I am a new subscriber, and I desperately need your advice. I am 54, with a moderately oily skin, and have very recently started on retin a 0.05% after extensively gone through numerous tutorials from certified cosmotologists and dermatologists. What I am experiencing is not excessive dryness, nor flakiness, nor breakouts. It is an intense sensitivity and a constant itchiness. Not just on the face where I apply it on the forehead and cheeks only, but also on my neck and ears. Oil-free basic moisturizers I have always been using are now stinging a bit before calming down the itch. Since I sometimes give in to the urge to scratch, I guess I'm causing micro tears. I do want to plough through the irritation with the hope that things will improve. Please advice

So glad you are stating this as many people think that we are supposed to suffer through this.. I remember what a horrible horrible experience I had with retinol. It was a prescription strength that my dad a physician had been given by a pharmaceutical rep for acne. This was back in the 80s told to put on daily. OMFG...It’s was so so painful and peeling and no cream would calm the fire 🔥. The rep said to keep putting it on since it was the purge. Finally my dad was nope this isn’t normal it’s certainly a reaction plus when I was exposed to the sun it would burn even more. FYI sun sensitivity on top of everything. I dumped that tube but wish I had it now 😅. It’s a learning experience.

*THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!* The same myth is told about isotretinoine. I had a conversation with my derm and we decided to go for a super low daily dose since my lifestyle already was the required by the substance. No purge, no liver damage, no Sahara face. Just a gentle and progressive diminution of my crazy excess of sebum production and pimples. Ma cherie, you would react as an exorscised person if you saw the majority of spanish derms who prescript 80-100mg isotret per day (three intakes 40+40+20mg) Yes, it' s not a typing mistake. I' ve seen faces spontaneusly breaking and bleeding from nose and lips. I' ve seen chronicle eye and mucoses damage... 🙄🥺 Nobody believes me when I say that I healed heavenly with 7.5 mg/day and just 5mg a few months after. Currently 46 yo and using tret 1% with antiaging purposes for years✨ Nobody never believes me neither with the isotret nor with my _tretage_ 😉 🧛🏻‍♀️🖤 Sending tones of love, my cousin.

I noticed with retinol that I only broke out where my skin was visibly congested before or tiny bumps were just on the verge of coming to a head, and no pimple stuck around for more than a few days. People say you’re “purging” if you’re breaking out on your typical areas, but even if I get a pimple on my cheek (where I usually break out) on an area that was totally flat and smooth before, I know it’s just a bad skin reaction. Really annoying that companies push the “purge” myth to get people to stick with a product for months that just isn’t working for them

I started using 0.04% tretinoin in October. I used it up until March, when I noticed my skin was only getting worse. I took a few weeks off before seeing a dermatologist. She prescribed a lower dose, 0.025%, in hopes that I’d have a better response. I’ve been breaking out ever since. Basically 7 months of horrible skin - the worst I’ve ever seen. So many people told me this was normal. I saw my derm yesterday and she agreed that tretinoin isn’t for me and my skin was actually having a reaction. Thanks for sharing this! People need to realize that these aren’t one-size-fits-all products.

I finally met someone who just totally has a similar experience to me. I also didn't find retinol suited my skin even in the lowest percentage. I suffered for almost 5months of breakout. When I went to the dermatologist in my area, she even said “how is it possible for somebody to not tolerate retinol at all?” 😅 I'm using only BHA to clear my pores and Vit C serum for antioxidants. Those two are likely passable enough for my skin to adapt. My skin now starting to get better with glowy finish 😊

@@santikadewi5090 wow, that's really unusual. Have you been able to tolerate bakuchiol? And peptides, like copper peptides for example, may also be good for collagen building.

@@ZakManga I know. It suddenly happened and I was in shock that my skin acted crazy. Now I diligently unclog pores and start using the granactive retinoid 2% to help me with keratinized and face oil to moist up the unclogged gunk so it didn't stick and find the way out. It’s much better like probably 80% better with almost Clear skin 💕

"It is a myth that the exacerbation of acne is necessary for the retinol to start working. There is no evidence that worsening of acne is needed and / or is to be anticipated before actually seeing visible clinical signs of improvement from your retinoid." - Dr. Shereene Idriss

This video was SO NEEDED, oh my gosh thank you… I’ve been experiencing a “purge” on my acne prone areas but with the overuse I also inflamed the comedones coming up, which was basically my skin telling me “ease it up!”. I’m so sick and tired of online skincare forums’ cult like thinking where everyone tells you that it’s ok to fuck up your skin bc there’s an end to this tunnel. All the scarring people had to go through! 😣
@leora2455
@leora2455 3 года назад
I did that with Tretnoin and SA... my skin inflamed all of the comedones and I got severe pitted scarring that lasts permanently! This video is SOOO necessary. Skin Purging is a GOD DAMN Myth!!!! If its worsening it after months of being on it - STOP IT!!!

🎉Summary: Purge- Hydroxy Acid and Retinol build collagen and increase skin turnover. Average lasts 3 weeks Skin reactions- Skin is sensitive and need the balance between efficacy and irritation. It doesn’t get better overtime. Not every breakout is a purge! To minimise irritation, start low and slow! (Lowest strength and 2-3 times a week) or buffer it with moisturiser

Salcylic , lactic , aha , bha , retinoids Vit c doesn't purge skin it reacts Lightest concentration and slow in routine , 2 times in week for 4 week then alternate and 4 week to 8 then see if it works then try daily or stick with slower ..... Consistency over intensity ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

I started Tretanoin on completely dry skin and use it once a week. I’m taking it slow becasue I have sensitive thin skin on my face. I also use Glossier niacinimide and zinc serum, an L Ascorbic acid serum I found in Amazon during day under moisturizer and spf… I listen to her advice and so far so good! I’m 49 and playing the long game and don’t want to over do it. If I can increase to twice a week then maybe every night I’ll do it SLOWLY ;-)
