Welcome to Smallville’s ‘cave era’ … this week Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum review Season 2 Episode 10: SKINWALKER!
After talking about how this is probably the unanimous decision for worst set to work on during the series, the guys get some insight from Al Gough on how important this cave plotline is to the vision of Season 2 and origin story of Clark Kent.
Tom remembers working with Tamara Feldman (as Kyla Willowbrook) and how intimidating the wolf was on set. Michael talks about the curse that is ‘knowing Clark’s secret’ while also giving props to another killer performance from Annette O’Toole..

Kyla absolutely could have been kept around for additional episodes. Sarah Carter portrayed Alicia in later seasons, who also had powers (teleportation) and was a love interest for Clark. Alicia’s knowledge of Clark’s abilities helped to shake up the show and created a great dynamic of both having powers.

i love the caves. It provides a very logical contact point with alien life. From the Kawatche legend, to an alien parasite, to Lionel's interest on Lex's interest in the caves. It'd make no sense if Lionel followed Clark just because Lex seemed hung up on Clark. But that there is trouble and phenomena emanating from the caves completely explains why Lionel is circling Clark's secret. It makes way more sense that the caves (being revered by the Kawatche) are a door to another world rather than there being a Fortress buried in the arctic that no Kryptonian even tried to use as a focal point of an empire building scheme until after Clark takes it. It is awful though that it seemed to be a rather toxic set to try working in.

Episodes this season I’m particularly excited for… visage, insurgence, suspect, rush, Rosetta, and Exodus. Rush is gonna be fun I think cause not only does Clark get affected by Red K, but also for anyone affected by the parasite, it’s basically Red K for them as humans. Insurgence because Clark does one of his first real big feats in jumping from building to building. Visage just really for Clark fighting his “clone”😂. Rosetta for obvious reasons, aka, Christopher Reeve. And then Exodus cause it’s, imo, one of the best finales of the series. Tense, bittersweet, sad… just straight up epic!

I normally hate "hostage situations" in tv shows because they're clearly a throw away episode and an attempt to cut costs by using only one or two locations while nerfing the main character. However, Insurgence is really good and it informs us on the Martha/Lionel relationship. Personally, I think Fever, Rosetta, and Exodus are the best of this season........ that we are yet to see. I still stand by my 3 Roses of this episode.

I can always tell when someone isn't a country boy or has never lived in a town like Smallville when asking about why they have dirt bikes. Being from a country farm town like Smallville, you're either quad-riding in the trails or dirt bike riding in the trails. It's what country boys and girls do for fun. Pete or Clark owning dirt bikes would not be out of the norm considering the town they are from in the show.

With the cave being introduced and depicting the arrival of our favorite Kryptonian, I could tell this was going to be a dive into the origins of Clark and maybe even explain if Kryptonians had visited before. What I found interesting is Tom's revelation about the owners not feeding the animals for a day or two before bringing them on set so they can be more responsive to their owners. It is interesting because an animal is your friend until it's hungry, and then you are its dinner. I recall a story I read a while ago where a man left his dog alone for a week while he went on holiday, and upon his return, the hungry animal made him his meal. I only bring this up because a wolf is more dangerous than a dog, and if the trainer has starved the animal for a day or two, it could be looking at the actors as its potential meal.

I love how the show brings in the idea of previous Kryptonian visitors, I believe that they used to be space explorers in the comics. Good catch by Tom Welling noting that maybe this is why/how Jor-el knew where to send his son.

Skinwalker is one of my favorite episodes of Season Two. As a lover of Native American culture I find this connection between Clark and the legend of Naman very fascinating and I love it and that white wolf was beautiful❤. Also I've always wondered if there's a possible connection to the fact that Tom himself is partly Native, maybe he was a source of inspiration himself.❤ Sorry to hear that filming inside the Kawatche caves was so difficult and unhealthy, thanks for holding on, you guys are great! Thank you so much for everything guys I will never know how to thank you enough and I hope I can be a patreon myself sometime. Love you all❤.🌹🌹🌹for me.

@@TalkVillePodcast- I'm really surprised that you all didn't rip into the sunglasses scene between Lex and Lionel at the end. This may be the first time I remember the show messing up on continuity between camera shots. Lex has no sunglasses on when the camera is on him over Lionels shoulder. Flip angles to Lionel over Lex's shoulder and he has sunglasses on. The camera flips back and forth a few times. I really thought Rosenbaum would critique this scene. FYI - scene where Lex buys the cave off Lionel.

In response to Michael Rosenbaum's question about Kylie's sudden discovery of the symbols in the cave despite her numerous visits, her explanation is both intriguing and profound. When Kylie rushes to Clark's aid after his fall, and he assures her that he is unharmed, Clark then queries about her sudden presence, Kylie explains that she had been engaged in some work in a different part of the cave for her grandfather, and when Clark had falling it created a landslide that opened up a different part of the cave wall revealing a previously unknown area of the cave where the symbols were discovered, and she had never been before. That previous unknown part of the cave is the part of the cave where she and Clark now reside. If you look at 5:27 mark from the SkinWalker Smallville episode you can see the wall collapsing due to Clark's impact and her coming from that newly opened wall .

When I saw Pete and Tom riding their dirt bikes, I never thought about where they obtained them; I just thought it was boys being boys and simply having fun. It is almost when you see a group of teenagers riding BMX bikes, and you assume that they have them stashed in their garages and it was bought or paid for by them or by their guardians. I agree with Tom about missing Pete because he and Pete are pretty funny when they bounce off each other or when they are breaking into places. For example, take the scene where Clark falls down the hole; Pete arrives but doesn't know that Clark has company, so he then shouts down to Clark whether he needs help or he can jump up by himself; much to Kyla's surprise, Clark then shouts to Pete that he has company before then stating to Kyla that he is a funny guy and Pete simply replies okay. I love that scene. This episode is also the mythology for Clark, starting from the caves. I also made the connection (long before Al confirmed it) when Kayla stated that people came from the stars that could shoot fire from their eyes and had incredible strength; it was apparent from her statement that Kryptionians had visited Earth before, and the caves were the link or the staging ground. Ps I thought it was the grandfather who was the wolf, at least the writers did an excellent job of misdirecting the audience, and also, Kyla stormed off because Clark was right.

It was great to have Al on the show or at least on the phone, as he always had a unique perspective and insight into the world of Smallville. Even before Al mentioned it, I was able to make the connections that other Kryptonians had visited Earth, which had been hinted at throughout the show. Kyla even mentioned that other visitors had come to their planet in the past, bringing with them rocks that had an adverse effect on some members of the tribe. In response to Tom's question, where he questioned if Kyla was the only one of her kind, I don't believe that to be the case, as she explained that the meteorite had affected most of her ancestors but not all of them. This suggests that the gene responsible for the ability to change into wolves was passed down through generations by those who were affected and so more than likely other members of the tribe likely have the gene as well. This is entirely possible through the fact that Kyla, who was born many, many generations later has the gene. The episode served as a gateway to Clark's mythology, as we learned in the future seasons that Kryptonians have been coming to Earth for thousands of years through a portal in the cave.
