I love my sks as well. I actually use it in sandstorm just because I have one in real life and even though it’s not that good in game I still enjoy using it. The fire rate in game is definitely the biggest draw back. If u could shoot it as fast u can as most of the pistols in game it would be a pretty solid game
IIRC the SKS in this game is a Chinese SKS-D, which is pretty much a regular SKS just adapted to use the AK mag. Original SKS would have a 10 round internal mag that can either be loaded with a stripper clip or with loose rounds. As far as it's utility goes, it's got a longer barrel and a smoother action than the AK but it's still ergonomically and conceptually in the 1920's.
The SKS actually has nothing to do with the AK design-wise. It shares the same round but is actually essentially a scaled-down PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle. The SKS was developed right around the same time as the AK, and the two were adopted around the same time. The SKS was actually adopted as the standard rifle and the mainly took the place of submachine guns like the PPSh-41 and PPS-43. However, shortly after adopting them they realized that the AK could do everything the SKS could do and more, so they chose to standardize on the AK and give the SKS to guards and stuff who didn't really need a good gun since they probably weren't going to use them anyways. The model in-game is not a standard SKS. A normal Russian SKS would have most notably a 10-round non-detachable magazine, fed with stripper clips. The one in-game is a Norinco SKS-D, a Chinese export copy of the SKS that uses AK mags. The default mags in-game are actually not normal AK 30-rounders, they appear to be 20-round AK mags patterned off the 30-rounders. @@kepi-le9zn I guess I should clarify, they suck for military use. Not bad guns if you just want to have fun with 'em, but they were arguably obsolete before they entered service.
It has it's uses if you ask me. If you live in the middle of nowhere in Siberia or Alaska, it's a pretty usable general purpose rifle. It only sucks in modern combat because it's a 1930's concept that's only really used because they were made in the millions and any rifle is better than no rifle, especially if the rifle uses a very common cartridge.
Spamming the SKS with the drum mag is one of the most fun experiences you can have in this game and no one can convince me otherwise. The thing is a weapon of mass destruction in co-op.
Instead buff its stats I'd rather just make it cheaper, 1 point or free is totally acceptable. Being able to take more nades with you is also an advantage.
The SKS is a carbine made in 1945 made to fill in the role of "carbine" in the Red Army with the AK was still in development and was initially designed as an SMG. Essentially, the SKS was an M1 carbine with greater penetration and range. The reasoning was that a squad of infantry would have 3 guys with cheap SKS rifles and one guy with an AK-47 (which were initially expensive to produce), but AK production became cheap enough by the 1950s that they could just equip everybody with an AKM assault rifle.
I think here it shows again that this is primarily a Domination gun guide. I can see how even the Uzi would fair better in frantic close quarters shootouts but in Push I'd definitely score the SKS at least one step above the former, it can totally serve for a very decent budget marksman build.
The sks with the 50rd works great for playing coop as it lets you conserve ammo and reduce need to reload, while still having enough pen to kill light to no armor in one shot while many rifle rounds may struggle
As someone who's been playing Sandstorm for a bit recently I will say this. I have just recently explored the SKS and I've discovered that the gun can be a little situational. I usually run a recoil grip and extended mag and I've found that this thing can slap at long range, provide suppressing fire, hold down a flank or position (much like the Uzi), and slap people who decide to rush an objective straight on. I have used it to play push and Frontline. I have used the gun in co-op. While not as versatile and as good as the AK platform weapons available, it is a precursor to the AK platform and it was meant for a time where semi-auto fire really dominated the battlefield. The rifle was designed and manufactured during or shortly after WW2, and was a good rifle for the Soviet Union's desires until they fell in love with the design of the Avtomat Kalashnikov in 1947 which was later produced in 1949.
Quick SKS history rundown. Adopted at the end of WW2 as part of the replacement program that would standardize on one cartridge, 7.62x39mm. (This program included the RPD (1944), SKS (1945) and AK (1949).) Although a good rifle it was short lived and was quickly phased out in the late 50s as the Soviets got their stamping down and could put the AKM into true mass production. Around that time the AKM was a much better option with the 30 round detachable box magazine instead of the 10 round internal magazine fed by stripper clips. Main difference between the AK and SKS is that the AK is long-stroke gas piston operated whilst the SKS is short-stroke gas piston operated. In simple terms: The stick inside the upper tube that makes the gun shoot more than once is not the same. The gun in Insurgency seems to be a semi-auto version of the Chinese Type 63 SKS, which does in fact accept AK mags. One great option I can see as a buff for this is them adding a the standard muzzle brake and the full-auto function the original Type 63 has. Maybe even the bayonet for melee? Anyways great guide, I myself enjoy using the SKS from time to time.

The SKS, was the Soviet Unions answer to other nations modernizing their fire arms. Basically put during WW2 many nations were still using Bolt Action Rifles with rounds capable of reaching out at least 1100 meters, examples include: German 8mm Mauser, British .303, Russian 7.62 x 54R, and American 30-06. It became increasingly clear that many engagements were taking place at a fraction of that range, on top of the slow bolt action mechanisms which left soldiers exposed. Thus many nations began pushing for smaller ammunition in semi-automatic self loading rifles. With the US making the .30 Caliber used in the Garand's little brother the M1 Carbine, Germany began work on the 7.92 x 33 "Kurz" in the STG/MP-44 and MKB-42 Assault Rifles, and the Soviets began their own work in 1943 after it became clear that their original Semi-Auto Self Loading Rifle by Tokarev, the SVT-40, was plagued by the same issues as the then standard issue Mosin Nagant as they both shared the 7.62 x 54R ammo type, on top of the fact that the SVT often malfunctioned due to poor production quality and feeding issues. So the 7.62 x 39 round would be made in 1943, and Simonov, the same man who made the PTRS-41 Anti-Tank rifle, would be tasked with making a Semi-Automatic Self Loading Rifle to replace the aging Mosin and flawed SVT-40 rifle, and in 1945 he would complete the SKS. It would see mass production until 1958 when the AK-47 and later the AKM became the standard issue service rifle of Soviet Red Army personnel. However the SKS saw use in the Chinese Civil War, Korean War, Vietnam War, and is still used by insurgents world wide as a DMR, Sniper's Rifle, and Battle Rifle. Final note: The SKS in game is not a Russian model, but is likely a foreign made model as the original SKS rifle did not accept AKM mags. My best guess is its a Chinese or Yugoslavian SKS. Just thought I'd share some info on the weapon as you were wondering what it was exactly. Fun Fact: Nearly all SKS models have a built in retractable Bayonet.
Ok, quick history lesson on this gun for the uneducated. Near the tail end of WW2, the Red Army of the USSR was looking for new weapons to replace their current line of weapons. They had already done this with the PM Makarov which was to replace the Tula Tokarev, they wanted a new rifle that would replace the Mosin Nagant bolt actions and SVT-40 battle rifles. One of the chief gun designers Simonovka, would fulfill this request by making a smaller variant of the PTRS-41 anti-tank rifle, chambered in the new 7.62 intermediate cartridge. It would have a 10 round internal magazine that could only be fed using 10 round strip-clips. However, at the same time, a now famous Kalashnikov was working on a weapon to replace the PPSH-41 SMG, which would be similar in use but with a more powerful round. He also chose the new intermediate 7.62 round and would create the AK-47. Upon realizing that the AK could not only do the job of the SKS but more, they pretty much halted production of the SKS, and gave the Chinese the rights to manufacture it. China would eventually make a version that would accept the AK pattern magazines and sell them on the commercial market. Pretty much from the beginning, the AK could do everything the SKS could do and more, which to this day stands with the SKS being "the poor man's ak".
The SKS is a precursor to the AK-47. It fires the same ammo, has similar aesthetics but is basically completely different in every other aspect. Kinda like the M1 Garand is to the M14. The SKS was developed in the last years of ww2. It was mass produced but the war ended before it saw service. Then the AK-47 came around and make the SKS pretty much obsolete over night.
Well here it goes The SKS was first put to use in 1945. Two years beafore the ak was ready for mass production. But even when it was first introduced the SKS was allready obsolete beacouse of its usage of stripper clips and a limiting 10 round capacity. It wasnt untill the mid 1950s that the ak fully replaced the SKS in the red army. When it comes to internal similarity to the ak they are preety similar in the gas system but not so in the bolt. While they both use the same 7.62x39 round they first off did not use the same magazine. That was only a modification made by people who enjoy giving me anxiety. Hope this was somewhat helpfull.
I noticed that Rising Storm 2’s sks is almost the same, small clip size (not mag), aight tier damage, mediocre rate of fire. I’m kinda gettin the sense that the sks overall is just a meh kinda gun, which would make sense imo, it’s essentially a semi-auto ak from what I understand. It’s like taking a fantastic gun and removing one of its core features
SKS was pretty beast by console standards on battlefield 3, in hardcore lobbies. But I know we live in different times and are discussing a nerfed gun on a pc game...
give it the full auto conversion for a high point cost some of the scuffed chinese sks can get apparently it gets a blistering rate of fire when its modified like that
I don't agree. I'm relatively new to Sandstorm but I feel the SKS is a great rush weapon if used correctly. Especially in domination with drum mags. Everyone loves the FAL and the FAL is great in less confined areas, but it doesn't draw as quickly and it's a little clunky. I really like it with a suppressor and drum mags. You can tap quickly and punch through walls where an SMG can't. It's probably my second favorite weapon behind the PKM right now. And I can't wait to slaughter with the RPK.
Im glad i got into sandstorm when i did cuz every video i watch i think "what the hell is he talking about that guns great" then i realize the devs listened and buffed the guns
The SKS was primarily built for the less wealthy countries such as the union of Iraq and everyone against the Mujaheddin. It was built during the Russian-Afghan war and was the predecessor to the AKM/AK-47 as it had a stamped and not a milled receiver. It quickly became useless as the newer and much better AK-74 line of rifles came out right after The war.
This thing has a funny thing with the fire rate. In real life the firing pin in the bolt is free floating so that means theres no spring to push the pin back into the position its supposed to be in before you pull the trigger. So if you let it get too dirty the pin can get stuck forward and it'll pretty much work like an open bolt for a couple rounds, or the rest of the mag, and shoot at around 900rpm. the gun should be able to shoot faster in the game in my opinion, buff it and give it a bump fire option for close quarters lol.
I used this one in Insurgency and rather liked it. I put a 2x or 4x scope on it and used it as a DMR rifle. Bummer that it can't do that in this iteration of the game.
You remember the ptrs41 from cod5? The sks is a tiny version of that and was meant to replace the mosin and SVT while the ak was meant to replace the gaggle of SMGs in service at the time. Sounds stupid but we're talking about the country that blew up their own tanks with dog bombs.
I hate that you can SEE the integral bayonet folded into the stock, but we can’t use it. That could be a sick way to buff this gun, like yeah it sucks but you can go full commando pro mw2 on people
I have found that it is usually the person with the gun who does not use it properly. You know, like in those combat flight sims where a person tries to fly a bomber like a zero and then bitches about the bomber not being maneuverable enough. The SKS has its own niche. You cannot play it like it is a CQ gun.
The SKS was made after the 2nd WW with the intent to be a better service rifle than the mosin, but the russians and most other soviet countries instead adopted the AK. They are not internally similar and the only shared factor is the AKM having the same caliber. Very few SOviet countries adopted the SKS, such as Vietnam and China
Slight correction, the SKS was developed during WW2 and first saw combat in field trials against the final Nazi holdouts. There’s a great picture I’ve seen of a russian solider in Berlin with one of these trail SKS rifles. Interestingly they have a cheese grater heat shield similar to the SVT-40s
The thing with tis gun is, if you buy the extended mag, you effectively have a worse Alpha AK for the same cost. This needs to change. I would make either the SKS cheaper or the extended mags or both and reduce the recoil even more to make it a laser beam. I think it could get a buff in velocity too. That way, it would still be sub-optimal at close range but it would be more viable at long range and you would have quite a bit of points for utility or attachments.
Am i just dumb or does this look more like the Type 63 Chinese a weird copy of the Russian SKS and a modified bolt of the type 52 (Chinese AK copy) which might I add has the ability to have full auto fire which would be quite cool to see, it could be a FN FAL but with a smaller mad and maybe less recoil seeing as it’s basically an AK but heavier... it can even take the AK-47’s mags
Its actually funny that when i was a newbie to this game, the SKS was my favourite weapon, for some reason i was really good with it. I dont know why, but later on i have started to hate that weapon for the reasons you mentioned.
This being worse than an AK in every way is pretty legit. It got adopted by the USSR for like, five years, then they realised they could just issue the AK to everyone and just did that because the SKS was a little pointless. They're still used as parade guns in Russia now, and you see them cropping up in random low intensity conflicts to this day. The other point is that in reality they're no more accurate than AKs on semi-auto, so... yeah.
This is an AK precursor, light DMR, and this iteration is the highly adaptable/versatile Chinese export model that is compatible with almost any 7.62 AK mag, except magpul mags, cause outdated vs aftermarket BS.
Unfortunately the main reasons the SKS was good on Insurgency 2014 don't translate well into Sandstorm. It's not nearly as accurate, and back then, the AK 7.62x39mm ammunition could one-tap to the chest without armor at a decent range. Those are no longer the case and now this gun is just... bad.
The SKS is bad in this game? Never noticed since I usually do pretty well with it. I found that trying to fight with it at range though was not great, but it felt surprisingly beastly in close range with an MRO.
I top frag with the sks, no attachments other than an extended mag, any gun is good in the right hands, map awareness and good intuition are always more important than the gun youre using
SKS =Samozaryadny karabin systema siminova Model 1945. Short stroke gas piston and op rod with a tiliting bolt vs Long stroke gas piston attached directly to the bolt carrier group and rotating 2 lug bolt in the Kalashnikov system or AK-47.
Give it default 30rd mag and and make it 1 or 0 credit. Also what if you make EVERY attachment 1 credit cheaper on the SKS?? Get crazy with it! You'd be able to have heavy armor, a heavy carrier, straight frag grenades, a 4x-1x optic, a suppressor, and a recoil grip bipod/gripod
The thing I worry about with a buff is that the gun seems currently pretty realistic at the moment, minus the arbitrary 20 round hunting mags. The fire cap is already pretty high. So it seems to be another case of realism vs. gameplay. Sigh.
@Grass I think it's currently an okay speed. Imagine trying to pull an 8lb trigger 2.5 times every second, being hit with the recoil of each shot AFTER just having gotten out of a sprint, and also potentially in the middle of a firefight where bullets are whizzing past your head.
the SKS was developed seperately from the ak (it was developed before the ak, in 1943 by a guy called simonov ). Post WW2-- it ""WAS" meant to be fielded as standard issue generic main rifle (like the modern m16) and ak 47 was supposed to be an SMG (yes -to russians the ak was originaly an SMG) , eventualy the ruskies realised that the ak does just as good as the sks at long range and is full auto with a higher capacity, basicaly better in every concivable way . the only advantige the sks has is the ability to be quickly reloaded with stripper clips (less weight and ability to quickly top of a half empty mag in middle of combat, (ak"s techincaly have stripper clips but its nothing you would try in a firefight because you have to separate the mag and the gun then use both hands to load your mag,---its slow , cumbersome and impractical for combat)
The fastest shooter used the sks (btw it original version don’t have a detachable mag) the spacing between each shot is .165 rounds which is high also the sks needs the damage and rof buff definitely
The SKS is one of them guns where it’s better than nothing I own one it’s a glorified stick that shoots and has a pointy thing there obsolete in modern combat but hay the enemy’s got a nice gun and that were the sks comes in basically the liberator rifle better than a rock
change it... make it cost 1 but use strip clips and make it mag-fed for 1 extra cost and 2 for extended make it so you can shoot as fast as you can click and make its melee 1 hit since it has the bayonet... give it rifle grenade like the yugo ones add full auto conversion as ... idk 2 or 3 point upgrade
Sks was adopted along side the ak . (Sks predates the ak i think but not by much). Ak was supposed to be an smg and the sks the rifle. Eventually someone finally figured out that ak is basicaly a beter sks in almost every way
Sks had an affordability advantage because of being able to take stripperclips ,carrying ammo in stripperclips saves volume and weight(no metal box, no spring), and is much cheaper to stamp out so loosing a clip isn't as bad as loosing a magazine.it would be a good ww2 weapon but it is a cold war weapon so it is lacking. Its still a gun. It shoots bullets. Gud nuff for yugoslavias self harm phase.
@@somerandommen compared to just about everything else it sucks. I use to own one but it sucked so I sold it. Underpowered cartridge compared to anything more comparable and it's outdated as shit.
