in this film, see the walrus audio slö multi texture reverb vs walrus audio fathom multi function reverb. the fathom has 4 different algorithms {hall, plate, lo-fi, sonar} & the slö has 3 algorithms {dark which is lower octave, rise which is ambient swell, dream which is latching pad} as well as 3 different wave shapes {sine, warp, sink}. both of these guitar effects pedals are perfect for modulated ambience. in this review & demo, i compare and contrast the two to show similarities & differences. walrus audio are also known for the julia, arp-87, deep six, lillian, voyager, descent, monument, messemer, limited edition pedals & the phoenix power supply. use either of these with other effects such as delay, distortion, fuzz, overdrive, phaser, flanger, chorus, pitch shifter & tremolo on your pedalboard setup or rig for some creative sounds & tone. these could be used to make soundscapes for a various genres, including ambient, worship, indie, alternative, post rock, dream pop & shoegaze. comment below if you’ve tried either of these with a synth or bass.

I have 15 pedals on my board and really just came here to bitch that the buffer sucks tone....not by itself no, but as a gang with the other 5 buffers on my board....they say buffers are like beers, 2 or 3 can might help add a little sparkle or smoothness...more than that and things start to get sloppy.

For some bizarre reason no one else has done this comparison before. Good job! I've owned a Fathom and it's great for what it does. It just wasn't for me. BTW, on the Fathom, there's a secret delay algorithm. In Hall mode, hold down the sustain, turn the knob all the way to Sonar, and it becomes a delay. Just do the opposite to change it back.

@KipCount

@@bluesman000 I know what you mean about the Fathom sustain hold function. It seems to not vary all that much from wherever you have things set. It definitely sustains the tail more but it's subtle for sure. Do you find the Slö can pull off more subtle Room/Hall in Dream mode with mod off, and level and sustain dialed back? Just trying to sort out my reverb section right now, and I'm bouncing a few options around. If the Slö can pull off some subtle settings, it'll be more useful to me. Thanks!

@heavybending I have listened to many reverb pedal demos and kept coming back to these two Walrus pedals, Slo & Fathom. I finally realized that the Fathom made more sense because it can do some sounds similar to the Slo, but it can also provide the traditional Room, Hall & Plate sounds. So, the Slo is more of a non-traditional reverb, and the Fathom is more of a hybrid.

Someone who uses their pedals for cool sounding stuff and not generic blah playing (I'm not a 50 year old cover band dude) so I can't stand those videos. Anyways, Do you have an Old Blood Noise Dark Star, Caroline Meteore or an Earthquaker Transmisser to compare the Slo with? Your video's are awesome and those are the pedals I'm torn between lol. If you like that, you should definitely also check out the Haunted Labs "Dark Aura" modulated reverb. I just bought the Slo today. Tested in shop and even with a distortion combined to it. Sounds damn good. I now have a question. By considering my main influences alternate between Blues-rock/Hard rock up to metal. Will I have to set endlessly the three preset modes or is it possible to fix it pretty fast? By the way, your video is awesome and you made a great demo of those two reverbs. I fell in love with Walrus straight up. Congratulations and greetings from Belgium ;)

@Pedal Partners -- are you running a specific segment/sample through, like, a loop station here, and then simply manipulating that segment/sample with each/both pedals? Was mainly curious if these pedals are recycling a particular segment/sample, or if you're using an additional pedal (like a Boss RC-2, f.ex.) for that. Apologies for the novice question, and thank you for all you do.

no worries at all, good question! most the time nowadays we do live takes, i find when i'm just focusing on demoing a pedal that using a looper (like i have here) helps me focus on displaying each parameter to the fullest extent :)

Thinking about getting the fathom or the ehx cathedral, any thoughts? I love that the cathedral has presets, and I like the tone, but the same can be said for the Fathom; I love water and the fact that its an underwater reverb. And that it has modulation that can make it sound more true to a real reverbs tone and artifacts. Its also compact which is nice. I'm Primarily a rock, pop, lofi, punk and grunge person, but also into ambient and shoegazey stuff - I'm all over the board. If anyone has tried both let me know your thoughts. Also thanks for the video pedal partners, I love the vibes !

i have the ehx holy grail max & like the look of the cathedral too. whilst they do sound great, the walrus audio sounds is unmatched in terms of pure beauty & aesthetic. it's such a nice sound & the modulation really makes everything so dreamy. i would definitely go for the walrus, especially in regards to the ambient & shoegaze side of things. glad you enjoyed the video, thank you!

@@pedalpartners ended up getting the slo because I already have a basic reverb spring in my amp and a plate/echo in my canyon. I realized I wanted more of a secret weapon than just an average reverb. I already own the Slo but I've put some serious thought into also buying the Fathom and then running the stereo signals out of my delay pedal into each of them so I'd have Slo on one side and Fathom on the other. Would this work? They'd run in parallel instead of one into the other.
@pedalpartners
@pedalpartners 4 года назад
they're definitely unique enough, there's really nothing like using them together. i'm not sure if that would work, depends on your delay, i guess you'll just have to try!

@@pedalpartners I have a Source Audio Nemesis. The plan would have been to send the outs from the Nemesis to two different reverbs, then to two amps or two channels of an interface. Figured the Fathom could fulfill the other side well.

I don't think you've made a video similar but I would love to eventually see a video comparing the Slö to the Polara. I have a Polara on my board and would love to see what you could do with it and compare it to a slightly more expensive pedal such as the Slö!

Liam McCourt Polara is Digitech tho.
@billmint8122
@billmint8122 4 года назад
Also worth noting, Polara mostly has "normal" reverbs; hall, plate, spring, etc. with reverse and shimmer options. The Slö is its own beast.

@@billmint8122 I know its digitech and more normal, I would just like to see him mess with the shimmer and the reverse

I also know this is not important but he's made comparisons with the slö and EQD pedals so the fact the polara is digitech shouldn't make too much of a difference. I totally see where you are coming from with the fact that the digitech can be used for more standard reverb sounds while the Slö is more "out there". Just thought it was a fun suggestion

I’m curious about your thoughts on using one of these with an acoustic guitar with pickups, and which one makes the most sense if you had to choose only one (I know, blasphemy…). But still, if you could fit only one on your board, which would you recommend for this kind of setup? Guitar > BodyRez > Corona Chorus > Flashback Delay >Slo or Fathom is the likely chain (minimalist board + tuner).
@pedalpartners

hmmm the freeze function on the slö (dream mode latching pad) might be really cool with acoustic! i feel like walrus always take what they learn from one pedal & put it into the next i.e. fathom to slö to lore :)

Of these two I think the slo is the better pick. But even when I had the slow I couldn’t find much practical use for it outside of ambient weird stuff. I Swapped it out for a Strymon Big Sky.
