At 51, I've lost 10-12 lbs over the years time and time again via different methods. And its always come back and remained insulin resistant for most of my life. IF and prolonged fasting were life changers for me. In one year I've remained insulin sensitive, and no longer have the knee pain, ankle, back pain, memory problems, skin tags, or mild rosacea that have plagued me through most of my life. Jason Fung, That "Chiropractor" Dr. Berg, and Mindy Pelz have all helped me, where traditional MDs have only kept me afloat, not really getting any better. Thank god I found them all last year.

IF has worked for you because it produced a calorie deficit. The issue with Jason Fung is that he promotes IF as some kind of panacea that cures everything, when in fact, a lot of the benefits are due to the calorie deficit IF tends to introduce, and not due to something restricted to IF in particular. I too find IF to be an effective diet, but when calories are equated, just about any diet produces similar results.

I have followed Dr. Fung (and other low carb / IF youtubers) since I started my weightloss journey only 4 months ago. He is definitely hung up on the fasting...and even extended fasting, for days! Seems a bit extreme. Ive tried his recommendation of "one meal a day", it did help weightloss, but not without suffering. I think we can all lose weight and maintain a healthy weight by eating our 3 nutritious portion/calorie controlled meals a day, without having to suffer hunger and anger and cravings on "one meal a day" diets like Fung recommends. Now that ive dropped the weight and started cardio and bodybuilding i've had to increase my calories even more for the energy for my intense workouts. I really appreciate your input on his ideas! Cheers, looking forward to the next one.

Wow, your title is actually mildly click baity yet not misleading, haha, nice going, nice video as always. Even Layne Norton was slashing at Jason Fung regarding the insulin sensitivity, talking about the same things as you are. This is why insulin is not "the only" factor in fat storage like many people think. I remember your video about ASP, Acylation Stimulating Hormone for example. I remember a study where obese people with type 2 diabetes lost weight and reversed their diabetes with a high carb diet but in a calorie deficit. So much cardiovascular disease can be prevented simply by not overconsuming food of any food group.

@11soWoo

@@SanjeevSharma-vk1yo the idea is moderation. even good food group needs it. kale with thyroid, cucumber with blood clots, and if you eat anything with the peel, u should go for organic to avoid the high pesticide. dandelions, although harmless may have some side effects. cabbage is nice but could give major gas and bloats. if you lack a certain food group, then it is ok to overconsume to rebalance your body but once your body has enough, don't force it. I used to crave 6 cucumbers daily, but now I just eat 1-2 /day and my body doesn't want it anymore. being healthy is not about the numbers and statistics, you have to feel it as well, if your body doesn't want it, don't force it because somewhere you read said its good. something that might be good for others might not be good for you. when in doubt, just be normal and don't overindulge

Dr Ben Bikman, Dr Jason Fung and Dr Jamnadas have given me tons of great information and encouraged me to start fasting. I started slowly with the idea that I would take the Turtle approach to fat loss. I chose to be the Turtle because I have always tried to be the Rabbit and lose weight fast. It was always a complete disaster. I starved myself and lost weight but I would quit and resume my old eating patterns of binge eating all kinds of junk foods every night. Chip, pretzels, Coke, Cake, pie, ice cream, cookies, pizza, etc etc etc. I was walking every day.Didn't matter because my caloric intake was way more than I needed on a daily basis. Its easy to get fat. Its difficult to take it off unless you have a very strong will. Now my Turtle approach is more realistic for me. Fasting 16:8 and occasional 18:6 Is getting easier. My sweet tooth seems to have disappeared but I know its locked away and just waiting to get out. I am determined not to let it out of the cage. Just like having a hungry Tiger in a cage. One day at a time is my way of doing it from now on. btw, I'd like to get your take on Dr Ken Berry and Dr Shawn Baker the Carnivore Diet guy. TIA

In the practical world, the type of food you eat makes all the difference. If you cut calories but still eat a lot of carbs, you will get an insulin response, which will prevent you from using your stored fat. As your blood sugar drops, you will get ravenously hungry, and eventually your will power will be overcome and you will binge eat. If you cut calories and eat a low carb, high fat, adequate protein meal, your insulin will rise and fall quickly, and then you will be able to use your belly fat. You will not be hungry, and by fasting you will reduce your calories. That is why Eat Less Move More doesn't work and why Keto is so popular.

I feel his book the Obesity code explained things better, also the studies he used in the book were claimed to be double -blinded and randomized. Have you had a chance to look at it? Basically he said eating multiple meals with snacks in between will keep the insulin level constantly elevated and thus more likely to cause insulin resistance, which made sense to me, any thoughts on that?

Honestly I found the video confusing… I take it is that the main point of the video is that insulin doesn’t play that big of a role when it comes to fat loss. Another thing mentioned in his book is that carbohydrates do not seem to produce any satiety hormones and thus often lead to overeating.. I’m no scientist but certainly seems true. I can eat 2000 calories of noodles and desserts easily, but not fat or protein. but still, what dr fung advocates have worked for both diabetes and obese people by the tens of thousands judging by the comment sections so it must work.
@gregg6398
@gregg6398 2 года назад
comments sections also suggested masks and vaccines stop c19 transmission, but we all see how that went. You'll learn about science through data and an understanding of proper methodological control, the differences between prototype trials and mass-production, an understanding of the importance of proper blinding, maintenance of control groups, or the effect of conflicts of interest on producing junk results disguising themselves as "evidence based medicine". So no... aggregating comment sections will not reliably bring you towards truth.

Hi Jason - thank you for the feedback. I appreciate you letting me know; I'll work on my clarity in the future. As for your second point, you're right, carbohydrates, especially liquid carbs, are less satiating. However, the type of carbohydrate makes a difference, as well. I have no doubt what Dr. Fung has mentioned has worked in the past and will work in the future - my only qualm is he doesn't explain why they work, correctly. No doubt he's helped, however.

You are caught up in the idea calories in calories out is an equation you can use to calculate fat loss and also insulin levels but the math simply doesn't work. You can't just reason out how things work based on known principles you have to measure them, which is what science is. When you fast your insulin levels will go down very dramatically in a short time, they will be down by 60% on average in 48 hours. If you simply eat the same things with lower calories they decrease much less if they are elevated. And if you eat low carb but the same calories as a high carb diet then they will also be lower. This means you can get at the actual fat in fat cells to burn it, otherwise you are burning sugar and triglycerides from the liver or worse, lean tissue. Same idea with cortisol, cortisol is great when fasting and you can get at the fat to burn it, it's terrible when you are in a high insulin state and will lead to burning lean tissue. Same with thyroid hormone, which goes through the roof on a high carb diet. Sounds great and conditionally it can be great, but when it is high you are also burning lean tissue. You want your hormone levels to be contextually appropriate or else bad things happen, and with insulin most of all.

@@gregg6398 Sure I do, You could have looked it up in 5 seconds. Some of the many benefits of fasting on the immune system, blood pressure, blood sugar and anti-aging, all backed up by clinical data: Thymus stem cells are regenerated, which suppresses aging and renews the immune system. Fasting stimulates phagocytosis, the ingestion of bacteria and viruses by the immune system. Blood pressure is quickly and dramatically lowered, which is very important for a good outcome with the current pandemic. Fasting increases nitric oxide, which has manifold postive effects like reducing arterial plaque. Weight loss from fasting only loses10% lean tissue and 90% fat compared to the typical 25% lean tissue and 75% fat lost when calorically restricting for long periods. Blood clotting is reduced and blood clots and arterial plaque are reabsorbed into the body. Vitamin D plasma levels are increased, and vitamin D in turn increases autophagy! Blood sugar and insulin are lowered, allowing white blood cells to move more freely throughout the body and do their job. Ideal blood sugar is around 80. Some viruses activate glycolosis (the release of sugar in the body) and clinically it has been shown that decreasing glucose metabolism in the body weakens the influenza virus. It's absolutely fine for cortisol to be high while fasting, because it produces sugar from fat instead of lean tissue ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-giEDadzoErs.html The hormone Leptin is an immunomodulator that keeps the body from attacking itself and obesity causes leptin resistance. Fasting very quickly reduces leptin resistance and leptin levels and one day of fasting can cut your leptin levels in half and gets your immune system working properly again! When you move out of MTOR your body shuts down the building blocks of the cell which are used to produce organelles and proteins. This means the mechanisms needed by viruses to replicate are by and large unavailable when you are in a deeply fasted state. It stimulates the AMPK complex and activates autophagy. Autophagy (literally self eating) will cause cells to recycle foreign matter such as viruses and kill cancerous and senescent cells. AMPK does many helpful things in the body including activating the body's antioxidant defenses. Does fast burn muscle? In most cases no! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-teQIaU6wp2o.html Deep ketosis virtually eliminates chronic inflammation in the body. This can offset the life threatening symptoms of viral pneumonia which effectively kills you through inflammation. This also creates BHB ketones in your body, which also help your immune system and anti-oxidative system, especially in the brain. Ketones also provide an additional energy source during infection, which is critical when trying to fight off a bug. In fact you can have as much as three times the total energy available in your blood when you are in deep ketosis, or even more. It increases mitochondrial function and repairs mitichondrial DNA, leading to improved ATP production and oxygen efficiency and thereby making cells better able to fight off infection. Increased mitochondrial function also has the added benefit of increasing your metabolism and cancer prevention! Fasts from 36-96 h actually INCREASE metabolic rate! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BeC_gIR2Z14.html Your body releases interferon which is also triggered by the body during viral attacks to shut down the replication ability of the surrounding cells and stop infections. After 72 hours or more fasted, your body actually recycles large numbers of immune bodies and creates new ones, rejuvenating your entire system. When you fast, this stimulates apoptosis in senescent or genetically damaged cells. This kills these cells off completely. Senescent cells are responsible for the effects of aging and are the root cause of the development of cancer. If it were possible to destroy them all it would completely stop aging and cancer. That is not possible but fasting can help limit these effects by killing off many of the affected cells and limiting the future effects of aging. Fasting also releases BDNF and NGF in the blood which stimulates new nerve and brain cell growth, helping a great deal with diseases like MS, peripheral neuropathy and Alzheimers. In fact, the biochemical precursor to BDNF is beta-hydroxybutyrate, which is the same ketone the body produces to nourish the brain while fasting. Autophagy induced by fasting even helps hair regrow. What breaks a fast? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7aRLsCpxy3o.html Dieters losing weight through intermittent fasting show greater reduction in waist size and increase in insulin sensitivity for the same weight lost and alternate day fasters were shown to lose fat while gaining muscle at the same time over a six month period. Fasting has been shown to increase bone marrow volume by 10% and levels of carnosine in the body in as little as a few weeks. Fasting also increases telomere length, negating some of the effects of aging at a cellular level. Eating one meal a day can bring most of these benefits to a lesser degree, and adding a few entire days off from eating per week will have even more effect especially when starting to feel poorly. Exogenous ketones can aid with fasting, making it easier in healthy people and allowing some people with specific issues to fast in spite of them without worrying as much about hypoglycemia. Children, pregnant or nursing women should not fast for periods longer than 16 hours. People with pancreatic tumors or certain forms of hypoglycemia generally cannot fast at all. Type 1 diabetics can also fast but it is more complicated and should be approached with caution as it could lead to ketoacidosis. Those with Addison's disease may also be unable to fast without liberal use of exogenous ketones, depending on severity. If you experience extreme symptoms of some kind, especially dizziness then simply break the fast and seek advice. If you’re SO right then why can’t you help yo momma lose weight 🙄 Really though these people all incorrectly manipulated me when I was younger. Malicious or not, it’s a shame they’re passing on this information when there’s already enough confusion. Best way to sum up the insulin aspect is that when fasting he’s looking at it over a short time period. If you spanned it out and isolated the same exact meal in the same person, the same amount of insulin will be released- just at different paces. For fat loss this doesn’t matter. And therefore, what approach you take is really what works best for you. It’s a completely different argument for overall health- I’m still indecisive but still lean towards the side that fasting is beneficial overall.

From personal experience I still lose weight when I’m eating a lot of meat or higher fat diet but it just takes some days of high carbs diet to gain a lot weight. But at the same time I can’t just eat a keto diet for over two months, so now I just do keto most of the week but add high carbs foods in some days then fast. So from my personal experience it’s not just calories in and calories out, it’s about the type of food you eat also

Can you say if a calorie controlled juice fast with just a few cups of juice a day will result in fat loss, if consuming nothing else? I know fasting works but I feel more energetic mentally if I have some glucose from fruit juice....Will it simply stop my fat burning though by having something with sugar? The way dr fung and other fasting prqctioners have presented their research makes me think that even eating less will not work at all for fat loss, will a controlled juice fast yield fast loss or is sugar the enemy and thats it? You have a PhD so you have the right info to clarify

I think there is an age factor. When you are younger it is easier to cut calories and lose weight maybe because the calories out is more constant. Probably varies for different people, but from my mid-50's I noticed that my body seemed to be much quicker to play games with me. My heart rate would lower and be harder to push up and my body temperature dropped around 0.6 degrees C. I experimented a lot with my diet but found when I simply just started avoiding processed sugar those issues greatly diminished. I lost weight even eating more, mostly likely because my calories out wasn't dropping so much. I don't have a way to measure insulin so I can't claim anything there, but my blood glucose and H1AC measurements improved a lot. However, cutting adder sugar means a lot more whole foods, so there could be other factors. Still, while I can control calories in, I can't really control calories out so there very well could be some impacts from hormones that allow my calories out to remain higher than before. My diet though isn't low carb, just lower processed.

Great points and as I've said before, I like Dr Fung, but he tries to dumb the information down too much and it can be misleading in some instances. I have an insulin related question, if you've answered it before please point me to your video. This is more of a keto question than a fasting question. If you are on a keto diet and you only ate (say) 1kg of cheddar cheese a day (this would be easy to do for me as I love cheese), with an approximate calorie intake of 4,000 calories, and you only burned 2,000 calories a day, and you kept this up for a week, what happens to the excess calorie uptake? As the cheddar has minimal carbs, and not enough to require insulin to be produced, does the body have another hormone that controls the storage of fat into fat cells, or would the excess fat be excreted by the body (which seems a waste that the body would avoid if possible)? I know its an extreme example and we need to consider other nutrients, however just ignoring those for the moment what would happen? I've been trying to find out but there seems to be little research on the subject.

I kind of expected both of you to talk about glucagon in that context. Isn't actually the glucagon responsible for "signaling" cells to start releasing the energy stored? Low insulin is not the signal "to use fat", the pancreas must actually increase the glucagon for that to happen. I even think there are people who need to receive extra glucagon for treating hypoglycemia.
@Physionic
@Physionic 2 года назад
That's a great point - you're right, glucagon does play a factor. However, other hormones beyond glucagon do, as well.

Always ppl who yoyo diet, while they do lose weight and fat, it's not a healthy lifestyle. Low carb, low fat or low cal with exercise and the right nutrients is best for weigtloss. Intermittent fasting is a good way to lose weight, as the doc points out. It doesn't cause your body to go into starvation mode bc ppl have fat stores. Unfortunately, there're many of those ignorant prople whose metabolism is "broken" from yoyoing weight or any other crazy dieting.
@DebraRNAtl
@DebraRNAtl 2 года назад
I'm just wondering...what is your point? Calorie deficit is preferred over intermittent fasting? It seems to me you are looking at a tiny portion of the big picture in the treatment of insulin resistance. The "quality" of the calories is imperative in treating insulin resistance. The AHA finally succumbed to the VLCHF diet this month (March 2022) as a primary treatment to prevent heart disease in an individual with insulin resistance. Again, I listened to your video and was perplexed regarding the point, the conclusion, the gotcha. Dr. Fung's presentation is focused on the metabolism of insulin resistance. Metabolic syndrome, fatty liver, kidney disease associated with insulin resistance cannot be treated with calorie deficit.
@Physionic

There isn't necessarily a point save to explain the mechanisms more clearly. I'm not opposed to the VLCHF diet, but I cover that in other content, Debra. I will say, some of his explanations are incorrect, as well - another reason I wanted to add some context.
