I started learning linux in 1999 with an old copy of Slackware 1. something. I spent hours and hours and hours running upstairs and downstairs to ask for help on IRC chat on one computer... then take files and whatnot back on a floppy disk to experiment/tinker. It was fun! I would "rice" window maker, enlightenment, fluxbox/openbox, and eventually xfce. I'm having fun watching this!

lol... it was pretty fun at the time. Man... I forgot about the dependency rabbit hole... with floppy disks across two computers (one with the internet, one without)... on dial up... ugh.

Thank you both dt and serge for this education. I live in linux (starting with debian ending on arch) for about 22 years now but never in slack. I am too lazy nowadays to go through the painless install of slack just to get rid of a ton of software that i don't need and doing time to search/download/check dependencies/compile/build/install... for what i want. +1 Package management definitely seems a bit more cumbersome on Slackware than just using yaourt or something. On the other hand, Slackware's solutions makes a lot of sense. Or like Serge said: "On Slackware your the king of dependencies". I understand the logic and possible advantages of it but don't know if I always want to be that king :D
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello tubelarasa! If people are really interested in package management and troubleshooting on Slackware Derek might decide in the future to do a video about sbotools, sbopkg, slackpkg+, how to create your own Slackware package. The troubleshooting would mainly concern how you fix some issues when you get an error message in the terminal. Cheers

That would be nice Serge. As I remember correctly Slackware was the first Linux distro I installed about 20 years ago. I got it to work, tried it out a bit and decided at that time it was not for me. But I could not resist to try it once in a while (say 2-3 times a year), along with Debian. Took me some years to decide I wanted to get rid of MS Windows and step into the 'Linux world'. Although I chose the Debian branch (mainly because I knew some people who were using Debian and the Internet was not what it is now) I always kept a soft spot for Slackware. As you know I'm a big Arch fan, but I have to say I'm pretty curious how Slackware has evolved. Especially because at some points it hasn't evolved very much ;) Besides that, I admire Volkerding's vision and devotion. So yes, I'm interested in a more advanced look at Slackware. Nice to see you collaborate with Derek by the way. I always imagined you as a 6 year old kid torturing 12 keyboards at a time so that was a little disappointing :D But I hope the two of you will make more interesting content together. Cheers!

Slackbuilds.org lists the dependencies if any exist and links those slackbuilds. I've never taken more than an hour on even the most complex new package install. Commonly it's mere minutes and I NEVER spend a single second with a broken system. Maintenance is security updates only. DONE!
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello enorbet! Well try to install inkscape from Slackbuilds.org So you need lxml and numpy. For lxml, you need BeautifulSoup4 and html5lib. For html5lib, you need six and python-webencodings. But for numpy you have to read the notes carefully because you'll need libraries implementing LAPACK and BLAS. I can assure you this will take time and you'll get a few issues. To solve them will take time. Cheers

Nice video! There was one major thing i missed: sbopkg This tool will help make the use of slackbuilds.org and building dependencies unbelievably easy. There is a little trick involved in getting it working with slackware-current, but nothing that a little research could not help with. 1, download and install sbogpk from github: github.com/sbopkg/sbopkg 2, switch the repository to the SBo-git repository (that works well with current) 3, bind the directory to version 15 (this is only required for current and only to build the queue files for dependency resolution) mount -o /var/lib/sbopkg/SBo-git /var/lib/sbopkg/SBo/15.0 4, run "sqg -q -j8" this will build the queue files on 8 threads 5, run sbopkg and check the Queue > Load and pick the program you like. Also you could have shown how to configure slackpkg+ and add additional binary package repositories to install software like: - KDE5 - vlc - Handbrake - etc...

Unofficial managers: 1:12:05 For those new to Slackware, or even more "lazy"... or wants it done now.... sbopkg.org/ Just a reminder to add the packages to the installation list in the order you need the dependencies... but make sure you don't already have the programs. There's a program that acts like Debians package manager. Worse case, the absolute last option, you could convert RPM to TGZ.
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello Adam! sbotools solves the dependencies and their order as well. So this is the most appropriate tool for the lazy ones! :P rpm2targz or rpm2tgz works perfectly; another option being src2pkg Cheers
@adamvansteenburg4449
@adamvansteenburg4449 6 лет назад
Serge -- I've been using Slackware since 8.0, it doesn't bother me to manually compile and package. I typically try to get all the (stable) configuration switches enabled. I'll typically use rpm2tgz only for larger packages not typically made for Slackware (like opeoffice before someone slack-packaged it). If I need to get a system set up faster I'll keep sbotools in mind, thank you. The last package manager i tried with dependacy tracking was slapt-get... but according to Wikipedia their last version was released in 2016.

It's important to realize that part of the Slackware philosophy of "being so big" (I'd suggest a partition size of 20GB or so for a "real" (not VM) install) is to insure everything works well together and far more important to most people, that most important dependencies are already in it making new packages easy with very little time spent manually resolving dependencies. It just works.

My first Linux install in 1996 was Slackware on a 486. I was never able to startx. Moving on, Slackware was my unquestionable go to distro well into the late 2000's. It took me a long to time to warm up to new fangled "easy software install" distros. Now I am running MX and will be moving to Solus at some point. I will always have a soft spot for Slackware. While I can see using it on a server, in many respects it fell behind, namely in package management.
@Doing_Time
@Doing_Time 3 года назад
Yeah, same time frame, 386 for me...the problem with X or doing useful things like going online was that it was pretty much impossible to get drivers for all your hardware back then, especially if you had a 'software' modem or an uncommon proprietary board or chip, or your manufacturer hadn't listed the refresh rate for your monitor... I played around with a few others like mandrake because redhat was and is my server distro of choice, but none were as rock solid as a labor of love slackware install (which could take months to get every driver working right and all of the dependencies compiled just right...). I left slackware because I didn't understand their weird new package management and kde 3.5 died, with no decent replacement ever taking it's place (openbox/lxde are next best, but not that close).

Hey Distrohuggers, I have been living in Fedora Rawhide about 50 man-hours now on hardware over the last 6 weeks, or so. ( Not really keeping track ). Today, I updated my install, to the 4.18.0.rc6 kernel along with some Mesa, gstreamer, grub, updates, and lots of dependencies. I am pretty scared to reboot. I really should have made a clone. I will update this post after rebooting ( hopefully not using my Android phone ). Okay, all was well with the update. I think it is safe to say that once Fedora releases an iso of Rawhide with the 4.18 stable kernel that all will be functional. So F29 should be overall in great shape. I am still running lots of flatpaks, and all that seems to be going well. I just don't have enough spare time or Linux knowledge to offer any opinions on the details of things. 4.18.0.rc6 kernel seems to be functional. At this stage, I wonder if it would do any good to do a clean install, or just wait for the Beta release ? I only have 2 annoying bugs, that I know of and they have been consistent and persistent. No wi-fi and super slow login-manger before and after login. It looks like there was a big update to Rawhide today, July 30th, and from what I can tell, it has all the latest wayland stuff.
@CrustyAbsconder
@CrustyAbsconder 6 лет назад
I don't yet know enough about Rawhide to make a DistroTube style video. There are Rawhide videos on RU-vid, but none of them do it justice. My take is that it is like the Debian unstable branch. While it offers Gnome components that are less than a month old, there are several things it lags behind on either saving them for the branch-split to Fedora 30 Rawhide, or still working out the problems before those components automatically hit the Rawhide repo and become updateable. For example, Rawhide is still stuck on a DNF version from 2 months ago, and there is some issue related to that, or as they would call a "proposed release blocker" or "accepted release blocker." But Rawhide is lightening fast with the kernel update. Usually 48 hours behind Mr. Torvald's release candidate. I bet a lot of distros benefit from the weeks of testing of that on Fedora Rawhide before the kernel becomes stable, or on its way to 4.18.1.

Nice to see Slackware still kicking around. I'll give the project credit in that they know how to keep things consistent. Watching this is a flash down memory lane, certain things and processes I remember look almost exactly like it did back when I was using around 2000, and while some might find that to be archic, others might find it to be charming. That is the beauty in the freedom given with platforms like linux, if you are satisfied with how things work then you can stick to it for 25 years and remain relatively modern, without having to sweep into new trends. It just might take a bit of extra work, but if I remember Slack users right then they don't mind a bit of work. The only un-charming thing I saw here was KDE4, I would of stuck with my old favorite WindowMaker. :) I definitely do not miss the days of swatting dependencies like sprouting weeds, especially in those days when there wasn't always vast, well managed places to find all of them. That was by far the main reason I had swapped to Gentoo around 2002-2003 and inevitably into Arch a decade later.

18:25 - you don’t need bootable flag if you install lilo in MBR, do you?
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello mina86! It depends on the BIOS. Some of these are so bad they need to know which is the bootable one => in fdisk/cfdisk you use the option a to tell which partition will be bootable. Cheers
@sergbormant8404
@sergbormant8404 6 лет назад
> Some of these are so bad they need to know which is the bootable one This is too strange. BIOS checks the signature of first sector (last two bytes) and if it is corect passes execution control to start of the sector's data. LILO's bootcode doesn't use bootable flag (and doesn't use partitions at all). Modern UEFI +GPT uses another scheme and another partitions and flags, but this isn't the case -- video is about BIOS+MBR. Microsoft bootcode for ntldr or bootmgr uses bootable flag, but this isn't the case -- video is about Slackware.

You don't need to be on the internet to install / Also Slackware current is the development version of Slackware its Very stable but will break during its development its not meant for a daily driver even though Some people do use it for one. Also next time use adduser to add a new user much easier... pkgs.org isnt the way to add packages to current.. look into slackpkg+

Hello Daniel! The latest stable iso based on 14.2 dates from 2016. Slackware current is definitely not for a newbie. We discussed the two methods of adding a user and as adduser is interactive we went for the one line command. Derek asked me not to complicate matters. I know that the way to install a package from pkgs.org is not the way to do it in the current branch. So I followed the section "Installing Pre-built Binary Packages" from this article as I thought it was the easiest way to understand: docs.slackware.com/howtos:slackware_admin:how_to_use_slackware_installing_software We agreed for this video to avoid this kind of method: www.slackwiki.com/Building_A_Package And at the end of the video I mentioned sbotools, sbopkg and slackpkg+ Don't forget that even if it seems that I am looking at the screens Derek had we didn't share the screen so I did everything by heart. Cheers.

Serge .. All in all it was a.good demo . I could see how doing "install help" via Skype without seeing his screen could be a major PIA .. Also don't remember if it was mentioned a great place for someone to get help is the slackware forum on linuxquestions.org .

>We discussed the two methods of adding a user and as adduser is interactive we went for the one line command ... and big self-made trap now wait for you... adduser can guide you the right way ^) It asks you about additional groups for new user and you can use the default set when press UpArrow key (help text is on screen). You can apply list of groups as is or add/remove something. Removing some groups restricts user rights in some way.

@Serg We didn't add the -G option in the useradd command so that I could show the usermod command. I know for myself which groups I want to belong to. I prefer useradd www.garron.me/en/go2linux/useradd-vs-adduser-ubuntu-linux.html
@sergbormant8404

> I know for myself which groups I want to belong to. Yes, but most of curious viewers do not. Mention about adduser script is for those who wants to try this himself to prevent them from unexpected consequences due to lack of one or another group membership. May be adduser (Slackware specific) first and then useradd+usermod+passwd (cross-distribution method) to do the same task is more valueable to show interactive versus command line. But this is your show and your rules ^)

I just stopped by to say thank you to Serge and Derrick for this as I have been a fan of Slackware for decades, literally. I personally prefer a tried true and stable OS as opposed to a lot of the other distros out here with backdoor software built in to it or available in the repos. Specially if one is concerned about privacy on the web... Thanks guys!

Hello Randomizer! I'd love to do one but Derek has got a new job and he might not have as much free time as he used to! If he finds some time to spend then I would like to help him finish the Gentoo installation he started. As he hasn't updated that VM for a long time there is plenty to show: new profile, gcc upgrade, python upgrade Cheers PS: Next Wednesday (15/08) at 6 PM French time we (Adrien, English Bob and myself) will do a live stream installation of Gentoo on this channel: ru-vid.com/show-UCjLSKO00DqkEPHn6lr6tpFQ

No disrespect or downtakling... but: 1.2MB/s is fast in your book? it's slow for me :) (seems you also seems troubled with Linux commands, with all the typos and not knowing what to type, e.g. user creation) Still nice video, you two working together.

Am I right to assume that there is no way to upgrade your whole system with a single command like we are used to then when there is no automatic dependency resolution?
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello themroc! No, first as root slackpkg update followed by slackpkg upgrade-all and you'll get all the available updates for your system. Now if some programs don't function anymore you need to take the appropriate measures yourself: either donwgrading some libraries or recompiling some packages against the new libraries. You are the only master on board!

Thank you for the help, Serge. Sounds like a challenge. Ok, I'm installing it on this new-old laptop I just got this weekend.
@serge5046
@serge5046 6 лет назад
Hello themroc! I received a notification about a new comment concerning a failure after a kernel upgrade. You need to be root => su - is mandatory. If you type sudo slackpkg update you'll get bash sudo command unknown slackpkg. When there is a kernel upgrade you must always update the configuration file of the bootloader => as root /sbin/lilo if lilo is your bootloader otherwise grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg You must always pay attention to the existence of .new files. You need to choose P/p for prompt. Then depending on the file the right answer is overwrite or keep or remove or merge. In doubt open two other tabs and look at both files to see the difference or in one other tab you can use the diff command => diff -wn /etc/inittab /etc/inittab.new If you have missed the opportunity to compare the .new files you can always launch as root slackpkg new-config If you forgot to act accordingly it might happen that you can't reboot. Try to follow some advice from this article adjusting the commands to your specific case: linuxdocs.org/HOWTOs/LILO-crash-rescue-HOWTO-1.html Cheers

What are al the groups I should add my user to? At 38:58 you say the name of a group I didn't get right after "video". It is laptop so I want to be able to connect to random wi-fis, using usb drives, etc... Last time I think I put lp,floppy,audio,video,cdrom,plugdev,power,netdev,scanner, but I didn't get time to see if I was running into problems for missing something.
