Hey Nick, first of all a shoutout from Germany. I like your videos very much. :-) A shame you love shaving so much. You look pretty handsome with a beard. ;-) I just switched from a multi cartridge Gilette to a Dovo Shavette and a Wilkinson Classic with brush and soap so I understand the addiction. Nonetheless I keep a contoured beard so there's still plenty to shave. Greetings Ben

Damnet! I have the Van Der Hagen, and when it comes to shaving anything longer than a days growth it only has 2 speeds. It either tugs like a mother to where I can not even begin to continue a stroke, or it glides on the safety bar and does nothing at all. Have tried multiple blades, different soaps / creams. I take it less aggressive razors just plain suck at removing actual growth? So damn frustrating. Advice is appreciated.

+Ryan Lee I would buy a better razor, the shave quality would be completely different if you were using a Merkur 34C or a slant like in this video, or any other razor from a quality company. I have been DE shaving for a couple years and I have the technique down nicely, but when I try to use one of those Van Der Hagen razors I cut myself very badly and get awful shaves. It's not that the Van Der Hagen is so mild that it can't cut, it's that it's such low quality that its shave isn't very good. The point I'm trying to make is that if you buy a quality razor you will have fantastic shaves, don't be discouraged you just need a little upgrade.

Once again, a great video. One question I want to ask you, the 3.75'' L (I guess means Length) so 9.5 cm is the full Length of the razor or just the handle of it? (if you know what I mean)

Nick: I can attest to the effectiveness of a good open comb razor. The ease with which it handles any job - large or small - is truly amazing. This is especially true if you have tried and are not impressed by the milder "conventional" double edge safety razors.

@SirOreo62
@SirOreo62 10 лет назад
Nice review. I think your observations are consistent with my experience. I'm not sure if slanted razors are truly designed to shave off beards with a long hair growth. Yes they will do the job also, but not as optimally as an open comb razor. I find that open comb razor will do a better job with long hair as the open comb is designed to allow long hair glide better through the razor head and thus the blade. I think that is the real purpose behind the design of an open comb razor. The slanted razor, I find, is better for those people who have thick stubbles (not necessarily long). The scythed cut of the slanted razor does a better job cutting through these. In my case, because I grow very thick hair fully all over my face and neck, I like using my slanted razor if I let my beard grow for 3 to 7 days, whereas I go to my open bar razors if I let my beard grow for 1 week or longer. I generally don't use open comb razors for anything less than 1 week of growth.

Hey Nick! Love the videos! I recently started shaving with a safety razor and I've really enjoyed it! I actually bought the "starter kit" that you recommended. I recently finished my tub of Razorock, so I had a question. What's your recommendation for a second soap and razor? I think it'd be a great to make a video about "best next level razors/ blades/ soaps." Like an intermediate set of shaving gear! I hope you consider it! Thanks for the content!

Hi Nick, I'm the italian guy and I like your videos very much!!! From 3 months I shave with the traditional method, and I bought the razors: Edwin Jagger 89, Feather Popular and Wilkinson Classic with whom I get along well, especially with edwin jagger. I have sensitive skin and beard hard enough, you advise me to buy the merkur 37c?In this video this razor seems to be really spectacular but I fear it is too aggressive for me. Thanks so much! Awesome video, as usual. Thanks! I've used a pre WWII German Open Comb razor in the past to remove literally a couple months of growth without having to dig out my old Bakelite WAHL or Oster hedge clippers first. It's amazing how such a simple design works so well, the Synergy Symmetry design is very close by looking at it in your hand. Your description/comparison of slice vs chop was spot-on. I've actually found holding my straight razor blade at a slight angle similar to the slant does feel a bit smoother, slicing rather than chopping, especially if the edge needs a little refreshing. Good comparisons! HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Be honest, after you were done shaving you went and did a little 'stache dance for your wife didn't you? Yeah you did. LOL! It's okay, we all do it. Really glad you showed how these two razors performed. I constantly have to deal with a week or two worth of growth and have to use my Wahl trimmers to mow down the growth before I can tackle it with my Fusion, but now since you have shown me the light with the safety razors I can't wait to try this. Goodbye cartridge razors!

I have incredibly thick facial hair, as well as densely packed in. I also shave my head, and head hair isn't as tough as facial hair for me as a white guy. I have yet to have any razor that I cannot get BBS aside from some clean up due to hairs growing a different way in two passes. I have to wonder how much is the razor, and how much is angle and technique.

so I really love your videos! But I have a question for you about this symmetry razor. I know that the slant bar got clogged up with hair but I guess I'm wondering is how you would feel about using it on an everyday shave? I don't have a beard to shave off but I am looking for a more aggressive razor for an everyday shave which one would you recommend for everyday saves if someone is looking for a more aggressive razor?

Merkur slant user here: Idk how much some of you folks are accepting of shimming your DE razors, but FWIW I added a 1 blade shim to my 39C. The slight change in blade position has made the razor the perfect amount of aggression IMO and I have been getting legit BBS in 2 passes without sacrificing the smoothness Nick alluded to in this video. (A daily shaver, A.o.S. Unscented Soap, Unscented Oil, Gillette Dark Platinums).

I have never aggressive, tried a safety razor but have aggressive been thinking about giving it a try, but after aggressive watching these videos it seems like aggressive to much work with a aggressive three or four step shave, presoap face aggressive, then you need a brush and soap aggressive, and blades etc....I just throw my razor away when its dull..one razor aggressive lasts me a week and I switch to a new one every aggressive Saturday so all that soap, aggressive, brushes, aggressive, pre soap aggressive replacing blades etc, aggressive is a lot of aggressive extra aggressive work I think aggressive

Uh, you want to run that by us again. Once you make the initial upfront investment, wet shaving with a DE razor is much cheaper than using cartridge razors. And it turns a rote experience into a joy. I now look forward to shaving and evaluating the performance of various razors, soaps and creams.

Well, I tried the symmetry open comb today, disappointed. about the only thing it took off my face was the shave soap, not much of the blade was extending from the comb, used a persona blade. I screwed the razor head onto the handle pretty snug. Thougths? suggestions? I had to use my Parker 98, a proven performer to get the shave done
@wross5961

if I could grow an actual beard,I would use the open comb for full growth beard just because it won't clog or snag but a safety bar is your daily driver after cutting beard since you can move faster in safety.Think you want a slant open comb razor to mow through a full beard in one pass or a rolls razor (straight razor on a stick).

Totally understand. When I cut my 4 day growth or the occasional full beard... it turns into a 45 minute fight with a Bic Disposable. Clog! Blast of Water. Clog! Blast of Water to Clear. Also it turns the Bic into a one use vice a 2 week Disposable. Safety Razors are the way to go. I have some Native American blood; my beard hair is really thick but it can be cut with something fairly blunt.

Great video Nick nice looking safety razor but I will stay with my shavette and straight razor. Found my dad's safety razor that he used a Gillette made in London England made in the 50s talk about aggressive this SR has NO safety bar what so ever. The SR is a 3 peace system that once assemble the blade is exposed just like a shavette blade is.

I love my OC symmetry razor! To me it's aggressive but a bit more smoother then the R41. It's doesn't have that aggressive "bite" to it. I pair mine with a GSB and use it daily with no irritation. BBS in 3 passes, DFS in 2. It's all about the touch and letting the weight of the razor work for you. But for a more efficient and less aggressive shave I like the PAA Bakelite razor. Very nice razor not nearly as aggressive but it mows down my thick facial hair fast. Only issue is I do get a bit of a pull in the bottom corners of my neck.

Hey Nick! I have a question about blades. How would you compare the personna lab blue blades to feather blades? For me, feather blades are too aggressive for me. It seems like the only good shaves I get from them are after a few shaves. For what it's worth, it seems like the Kai blades work the best for me (not as sharp as the feather). I know you love the personna blades and I'm very interested in trying them! Not sure if you have used Kai blades, but if you have, how do they compare to the personna? Nate

I start off by using a pre shave soap like the Musgo real lime glyce soap and follow with an exfoliating cleanser and then i use the merkur futur razor with a feather blade on setting 6 (it's highest setting) and use no pressure what so ever just let the weight of the razor and the sharpness of the blade do the work for you, first go with the grain and then against the grain and i promise you that you will get the closest non irritated shave of your life.

I've been using a 34c for quite some time now and due to my irregular shaving habits and needs, I just ordered the 37c. I'm excited to try it because white a straight bar can definitely do an immensely better job than any cartridge razor after a week's worth of growth, it still clogs up fast and doesn't 'get right down' like you say the 37c will. As for open comb...I don't really believe that they hand long growth any better I think they just handle clogging better if that makes any sense.

I've been using proraso blue tube for four months as it was my first shaving cream. When I apply it I get a mild burning uncomfortable feeling and it gets worse in the second pass. I realize that one gotta try lots of these products to find out what works the best. Would you save me time and recommend a nice slick shaving soap with not so many chemicals? I would order it and give it a try.

In Canada we have both the Nivea in the white box that you have plus the original in the blue box. It's a shame that you only seem to be able to get the white in the US as the blue is a bit better in my opinion.

@Terry13Shaw 10 лет назад
Really? I like the properties of the white but don't much like the smell left behind in brush... Any different with the regular one? (Im from Canada as well but have sensitive skin so naturally tried white first)

Terry13Shaw The blue tube smells a lot better. It's a fresh, spicy citrus type of smell that beats the white hands down. I'm not sure how well it works on sentitive skin but it seems very mild on my skin. You should give it a try and see.

Why don't you use a lathering bowl, you'd get a thinker lather, rather than runny...
@animal355
@animal355 9 лет назад
Yeah, its a choice thing, and for me I can get more lathered soap out of little used when using a bowl, because as well as shaving my face, I shave my head, for me its an economy drive. And the bonus is a cleaner smoother longer lasting shave.
@animal355
@animal355 9 лет назад
That's a great point, and one thing I need to experiment with, different brushes etc, I have lathered directly onto the face if in a rush and only have time for a quick shave, but for a more thorough shave I will favour the bowl, I get more from the soap and I can paint the soap on. But as a way of discovering new products, what brushes would you recommend?
@animal355
@animal355 9 лет назад
Boar Hair, interesting, thank you so much, 'every day is a school day', as they say, I will be on the look out for a boar hair brush. All the best Joesph.

I did have look at the brush he used before and I needed picking up from the floor, the Simpsons Chubby 2 is £125, which I thought was a lot...so boar may come out on price as a more affordable brush. For the price of the Simpsons, I would have to become a professional shaver, and start a business, so I could break even... nice chatting to you, again.

Juan Lujan Above The Tie US$185 S2 is a slant/opencomb razor on a choice of 3 handles, or head/cap separately for around US$150. Its SS and CMC machined, so very tight fit and tolerances. Only had 1 shave with it so far and ill give you the advice i was given and agree with, get the R41OC. I also loved the iKon101 too on my first shave, but im not a huge slant fan after trying the iKon102 slant, 37C slant or the S2. Might grow on me, might not... YMMV & blade choice is important on all agressive shavers, also the PhenixDOC is the best clean up shaver for BBS in my opinion so i do all my clean up with this razor and only use S2/41R/37C/102S for 2 passes as they are awesome but crap for BBS any of them as they will nick and burn for BBS.

ur 100% right on the cartridge razors on a beard, I had to shave my goatee and yes I had to use hair clippers to trim it down so my mach 3 wouldn't tear up my face lol, switching to a safety razor soon.

Main reason I went to a DE razor is that I only shave once or twice a week.
@sithinstructor
@sithinstructor 8 лет назад
+Chris Kelly84 That was a painful lesson that I learned early on. I grew it out for a bit and went full boar with a cartridge razor. Cut city. Ouch. After that I trimmed with a hair cutting electric firsd, then shaved. I am just now converting to DE.

what does that pencil do?
@nickshaves
@nickshaves 10 лет назад
It's a styptic pencil, it coagulates blood and stops bleeding
@martyaguilar6299
@martyaguilar6299 8 лет назад
+nick shaves I was wondering if you've ever tried using an alum bar instead. I watched another shaving video by another guy and he recommended one. I find they are more effective and less messy than a styptic pencil (no white residue after drying). Since it's a bar you rub over the entirety of your shaving area, I also find it helps you find your trouble areas, where you may be applying too much pressure (jawline, corners of the mouth).
@SGBass
@SGBass 8 лет назад
+Marty Aguilar Styptic pencils are a little "healthier" for your skin than alum bars, even though alum bars are generally more efficient.
