I have been attempting to play guitar for a few years now without any lessons (I am 52) In these years I have been learning I have devoured all the info I can off various web sites including RU-vid. The one thing that baffles me is the negative comments towards certain guitar players. i.e. Slash, Santana, Cobain and others. I just don't understand the negativity. To me playing guitar is an almost spiritual thing, with our fellow guitarists being our brethren. How can you in good faith insult one of your own. Please if you do not like someone's playing or style DO NOT LISTEN, simple.
While I don't believe that people should hate them, they aren't necessarily the best guitarists, not bad, in fact in the case of Santana and Slash, and many others, pretty great, but then there are the power chord junkies, and it's almost baffling how they get famous for all of powerchord's ease.
Oh, enjoyment is most certainly the goal, and draw, and I respect their passion. I also don't necessarily hate them for their use of power chords, or think they are necessarily unworthy of fame, but rather, less worthy than some others. That said, I do enjoy bands like Green Day (one of my favorites) and Nirvana, who are both power chord heavy, but there are people who would go as far to say that their guitarists have more talent than guitarists like Jimmy Page, and Don Felder, and the likes, and my point is that, they aren't as talented. As douchie as that sounds, it's a fact, whether you (and I don't mean YOU in particular, but you as in people in general who have the described mindset) particularly like the legends or not, it would be wrong to remove credit from them and give it to less worthy people. It is also equally wrong to completely rag on the power chord heavy bands, which is not my intention (my dearest apologies if it seams as though I am by the way). Of course enjoyment is what should make you like a band, and their guitarist, but it does not mean somebody should fanboy and hate on better guitarists just because theyre better than the band they love (once again, not referring to you, I actually respect your approach to defending power chord bands).
Thank you also for being among the proud (yet humble) few non trolls on the internet. For once I was able to enjoy an actual conversation, as opposed to a prick waving contest (pardon my french).
I never realized Slash was such a cool dude,posting this helpfull video.and also a well spoken , intelligent guy..always loved his guitar work but now I hold a new level of respect for him.
Can I just say; That Les Paul he is rocking in this video... I can’t imagine owning much more of a BEAUTIFUL guitar then that. That striped, butterscotch flamed maple top... Wow. I love it. That butterscotch color Les Paul, the aged Tobacco Burst, and the black & gold custom shop are my favorite colors for the Les Paul. Also really like the new, more modern aged Seafoam Green color on the Les Paul as well.
He's still got it. I really wasn't expecting anything I'd remember the next day but that is a really catchy song. The phrasing is really nice too, It's great seeing him play just as well as he ever has.
I love that when he records he just wings it around those basic key points of the melody he's come up with. That's how I learn a lot of his songs too, like November rain, I don't verbatim play the record on the fast bits.
I love him, I think he's one of most representative rock'n'roll guitar player. He the fusion of some genres of rock n roll I love the most! He made me fall in love w/ Les Paul guitar style!

This helped me a LOT in nailing down that bridge part. I'd gotten the rest down from listening to the record but those A minor voicings and variations in the bridge were an enigma. Good stuff!
i love that he share his music and teaches what he does. somebody need to call prince and tell him to eade up and stop being so tight before everyone forget his music!!
Some of you asked about Slash amp here. Well after I got it for fraction of second at 5.35, and after a quite some searching I have found some info about this amp--it is one of new slash signature 5watt tube amps ! he use it for practice and for recording ..type Marshall ADF 5W COMBO and you will find some info...
@JorgeVasques man i agree about everything you said, just one thing, dont ever say speed is not talent it help us project whats on our mind and it takes work
@jelledegitaarman The Electric is a Gibson Slash Signature Appetite for Destruction Les Paul. The Acoustic is a Gibson Hummingbird Pro. Hope that helps you out.
