In this video we keep testing the new Slate Digital VMR,
Virtual Mix Rack, specifically we tested the two compressors
on board the FG-116 and the FG-401 and we found them to be
quite amazing.

It's 2022 and I'm just remembering that I should be checking out Fg-401 more. Also, remembering the first time I used the FG-116 like...."ohhhhhhhhhhh". There it is.

plugin tweaking aside, I LOVE the bass sound on this track...it's so heavy and thick while completely lacking mud...nice and defined...one of the better bass sounds I've heard in a while

Thanks for the amazing video! Wow these sounded way better than I expected. That red one made the bass so punchy on circuit 1, oh nuggets now that´s something. In masterbus it brought up the rooms and reverbs/delays very nicely, absolutely beautiful. Really loved the revival too. gonna check out your mix rack equalizer video next. This Mix rack does look very promising indeed, have to talk to my wallet.. Thanks for doing these videos :}

Great presentation. New to Slate (purchased the FGx). Preparing to buy the VMR along w/ the VCC (when VCC is fixed) in Dec. along w/ the VTM. Do you think I should also buy the VBC (don't think I need the VBC if I buy the VMR). I'm a Presonus S1 user. Any opinions appreciated. Thanx

Hey!! You do some of the best reviews I've ever seen... no BS just the good stuff. Thanks for your contribution. Had a huge question for you or anyone else: slate's offering VMR + one slate plug for a deal... can't decide what other plug is the best? Do you have any plugins that just blow you away from the slate collection? (VTM, VCC, VBC)
@reacherstudio
@reacherstudio 9 лет назад
Great explanation! I definitely agree with you on that. So do you think using VMR as buss compression is no good? I do know slate is planning on releasing more inserts but I dunno if 'lunchbox' compression is a thing. I was thinking bout getting one of the kush audio plugs like Clariphonic instead.. But I suppose those "shimmer" type plugs are another version of that ambiguous EQ stuff that you can't control.. Tough choice. What's your #1 weapon VST wise right now?
@reacherstudio
@reacherstudio 9 лет назад
Word that's sweet I haven't heard of that. Have you tried that new eiosis air EQ?

I demoed the VBC and bought it after 2 days of experimenting with it. It is beyond brilliant! Next on my list is the VTM, and the the VCC 2.0 which seems like its coming out in a VMR module format & AAX! #SlateDigital for the win!

Great video. Question, is using the mix knob the same as doubling the track as far as parallel compression goes? Is there any advantages to doing the double?
@aholder4471
@aholder4471 5 лет назад
I know it's been a long time ago but, in case you haven't figured this out yet, the mixx knob is not doubling the signal as in playing the original full signal and adding a whole other signal on top of it. The mix knob is only subtracting signal. at 100% you are hearing 100% processed signal at 50% your hearing 50% process signal and 50% unprocessed signal. Hope this helps.

***** please forgive me if i sound like a nerd but please let us know about your gear. What mic/preamp and other outboard gear was used to track the vocal, your interface/converters (resolution i.e. 96k or 192k), and your monitors even. This recording sounds amazing. I'm constantly studying sound and gear and i have a few toys but man i wish i could get my stuff to sound close to this.
@bigdap100
@bigdap100 9 лет назад
***** cool and thanks man. I use RME (UFX), I have a Drawmer MX60 channel strip, Focusrite ISA One pre, and Warm Audio WA76 for vocal compression on the way in but i don't even come close to how this sounds. I use ADK mics also. Will you share with us your knowledge of microphones or at least what mic was used on the male vocal in this song... also what mic do you recommend for vocals, everything from affordable to boutique. Also what are good monitors for mixing, affordable and boutique. I really appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions bro, I will definitely share this channel with my friends b/c this is really opening my eyes to mixing.

***** Haha pretty insane gear! Cool to hear your thoughts about plugins as you seem to know how these analog stuff sound and feel. These ones had pretty obvious sound to them, not so with other modelling plugins I have.. Of course obvious effect is not necessarily a good thing, but on these tools it seemed like really appealing.

You trust the meters in SPL?? For sure its louder!! You have to level match it by ear otherwise your review is obsolete. I hate it every time when UAD is doing it.
@JamieClark
@JamieClark 9 лет назад
+MixbusTV those meters were not the same, definitely went up when engaged. Look at a larger meter or a metering plugin. Use peak, not rms or perceived, but look more closely, that was, indeed, a waste.

Great review! The plugs are "absolutely great sounding" indeed. I still prefer IK's T-Racks plugins, though. First, their SSL modules have not just the EQs, but the expanders and compressors as well. Second, they offer many more choices of modules, rather than just these for less money (with the current group buy ikmultimedia.com/trgb). The API modules in T-Racks, for example, are amazin. And, unlike Slate, they don't force you to use a dongle or their shell. And if you do choose to use their shell, you can use it to create parallel chains, which you can't do in Slate. So while Slate is much better at hype, IK actually has much better plugins.
@bereketbentiba7139
@bereketbentiba7139 9 лет назад
You are joking right? IK multimedia SSL British channel is the crappiest that I've ever heard. put fast attack on any kick drum. It will give you a click in every single hit of the drum.
@bereketbentiba7139
@bereketbentiba7139 9 лет назад
***** yes I agree I've tried Waves and I love them, however IK multimedia beside their British channel I've demoed some of their product and it is absolutely amazing. Their British channel is really crappy it feels like they didn't even demo before they released it. when you engage the fast attack of the compressor it gives you click sound on every hit. At least it was suppose to be a volume decrease but it doesn't do that.

Damn, I and I just decided to stop buying plugins for a while…ok after this!!
@rasi_rawss
@rasi_rawss 9 лет назад
Speaking as someone who owns a couple of these in rack form; save your money. These plugins are nothing new. It's all about the graphics and how many times they can say it's "analog". I promise you that you can achieve 100% identical results using your current plugins. The code and the processing is the same across the board.. It's about how you combine your EQs, compressors, and saturators precisely for the same exact effect. Major players use 80% pro tools stock plugins..Now, go buy yourself an instrument :)
@GARZA_ICMG
@GARZA_ICMG 9 лет назад
+RASI Rawss i doubt 80% would prefer stock PT to third party plug-ins though. Basic EQ's and delays make sense, I use the Lo-Fi almost every mix. As far as saturation and compression goes, the color itself is the selling point.
@larrytate1657
@larrytate1657 8 лет назад
No, there is a difference. Maybe if you go crazy you can get close to it but they are modeled differently and creates different results. Not much different than different hardware units modeled different.

I just don't know. Is it me or do these sound as good as any other compressor out there? I just don't hear anything special about them. They're good, yes, but not the end-all compressors.
@pablochavez7481
@pablochavez7481 8 лет назад
+Michael L. No offense but there is quite bit of difference between this plugins and the others out there, to be able to notice the difference you should have a trained ear and a good listening environment. They add very nice harmonics and tonal qualities to the tracks, you just have to pay a lot of attention to detail, because is within those little details that start adding up to make a huge difference!

I could hear the difference with the band but not the EDM music when everything was turned on. My hears aren't developed yet. :( lol
