I just picked up the vmr plugins and your vid has helped me know how i need to approach these plugins. Slate makes some amazing plugins. I also loved the reverb you did on the first mix. Very nice and educational review. I normally use Fabfilter Pro-Q because it has been so easy to understand instead of analog boxes, but having also bought VMR in a bundle from Slate Digital I will definitely use FG-S because of the HF and LF qualities from now on when needing to boost those frequencies on individual tracks. Thank you once again.

i use real racked 1073s all the time at the studio i work out of and a little goes a long way especially in the top shelf band. Thats just how they react in my experience. thanks for the vid

Very nice review you did there, thanks a lot! :-) I'm a lot into the SSL EQ and have found the Duende to sound most like I would expect from a real SSL... Though I must admit it has been some time now, since I worked on an SSL board! ;-) I was wondering if you have heard the 4000K from Softtube and what your thoughts might be on it's sound? BTW: I agree about the top end in the FG-S. From the example you did it does sound really nice... Maybe even better than the Duende who knows. ;-) Thanks again,

Question: I own Slate VMR. I wanted to have the SSL sound. Do you think Slate VMR FG-S EQ is better sounding that Waves SSL EQ in? Waves SSL 4000 is on sale now. I am thinking if I need to buy the Waves SSL 4000 plugin since I already own Slate VMR. Please provide your suggestion,

When I did a demo of Waves SSL 4000 channel strip (EQ) & compared with Slate FG-S (SSL EQ), it sounded different. Which EQ sounds closer to SSL 4000 hardware? Waves SSL 4000 plugin is on sale for $180. I have not used the original SSL hardware. Also, Does Duendo SSL Channel strip sound better than Waves SSL 4000 plugin? Please suggest..

bgeorge03 The Waves was modeled on CLA's personal SSL desk. I'm sure his has been modded through the years.

I prefer Waves over vmr, I prefer Softube over any other SSL channel

FG-N is quite dirty. Good for bass, snare..things you want to drive I would think.

When I tested the vmr I found that if you dial in some gain, not in drive mode! on the fg n, it ads some sheen an sparkle like it is said to be from a real 1073. However I don't have a neve pre to compare. What are your thoughts about it.

Wow that was a quick response on an 8 month old post. Respect! Indeed I was referring to frequency response and distortion. Slate seems to be quite good with modeling input amplifiers as they did with the VCC that's why I thought. Thanks for your opinion!!

I see. I can certainly agree about the plugins being hyped, but more in a marketed way. I compared the FG-N with the VEQ3 and except for the number of functions I didn't hear that much of a difference. One big difference I've noticed is that the Slate plugins introduce a lot of aliasing artefacts at sample rate of 44.1 when doing a sine sweep test at different amplitudes. That's a request for a new video, a video on aliasing in plugins; your thoughts on it, solutions etc!

Odd, my experience with the fg-n was that the highs was pretty natural. Everytime I tried to use the fg-s I thought it sounded a bit boring, because it wasn't as colored as the fg-n. I don't know. I produce saturated/distorted techno and underground'ish deep house, so maybe that's why. I don't know haha.

I only use FG-N on toms and vocals, sometimes. It is a bit too strong on most things. I just think it's a terrible, terrible subtractive EQ. Its too extreme. Honestly, the Custom Series EQ is the best VMR EQ now.
