respect? Yeah for 3 hours a week starting at midnight on saturdays. Then grunge came and then the metal was reduced to like 1.5hr because the same grunge videos played ALL DAY on MTV took up half the ball. For a minute they did the enter the pit which was all death metal stuff for a half hour after the ball. But it was always the bastard stepchild make no mistake
Yup..I saw them 4times. 1988. 1991. 1990 twice. Clash of titans 91 February 91 with testament October 1990 Sundance rock club December 1988 felt forum nyc
They did a video, because in 1988, Metallica broke down that door with ONE and other thrash bands followed suit, because at this time, Metallica were STILL a respected thrash band.
Dude, MegaDeth had several videos way before Metallica One... Wake up Dead, Peace Sells, Anarchy in the Usa, Holy Wars, Hangar 18. Metallica always refused to do any videos trying to prove some ego trip for some reason.
@@THRASHMETALFUNRIFFS I'm glad you brought up megadeth. Anthrax too had videos for their classics like "Madhouse" well before metallica's first video...
i also still have this recorded on a vhs from the night it aired! i used to spend the night at my grandparents' house every saturday night because they had cable and owned a vcr, just so i could record headbangers ball. good times! thanks
This was the moment I became a Slayer fan. I was freaked out about all of the satanic lyrics and imagery and wouldn't listen to them for years, but after seeing and hearing this premier vid for War Ensemble at the time it originally aired, I borrowed Seasons from a friend and became a fan for life.
I remember watching this on MTV. It was great to hear them in a normal setting. You never got that back then unless you went to a signing. It was before the internet and they didn't interview often. That Slayer tour was amazing, as they all have been. Riki Rachtman was a douchebag and probably still is. He got booed off stage at the Headbangers Ball concert.
The best show I ever went to was the "Clash of the Titans" ...Anthrax, Slayer, Megadeath, and a little known band named Alice in Chains opened the show. Epic and I still have the shirt... grayed and full of holes.
Man, Riki Rachtman was such a fucking tool. Headbangers Ball was killer when Adam Curry hosted it and was total glam ballad bullshit with Riki. My brother and I used to record it every Saturday night and watch it religiously when it was good.
+andotech The whole idea of the VJ makes me want to puke then shit my pants. One for depriving us of the music and one for the video. I always thought Martha Quinn was cute in a sort of low maintenance way.
andotech - Adam Curry was more of a tool than Riki...Programming was better the first time out...But during Riki's time, metal was starting to become watered down...Blame it on the program director
I’ve seen some monster pits in my day. I remember going to see Slayer open for Judas Priest back in the day. It was a swirling mass of 3 huge tornadoes of human bodies. I had to get in it. Seen some awesome pits in my day. I remember a Pantera gig where there was exposed pipes and plumbing hanging from the ceiling. Everyone would “monkey bar” across the ceiling and drop into the pit. Brutal stuff. I am 53 now and no longer pit-worthy. Now my old ass just sits in the stands and tries to at least headbang 😂
+Aarya Gaikwad Yeah, but I'm old. It was their best album, IMO. It has more political and social subject matter than any that came before. The whole devil thing is silly to me. And the song the album is named for is my all-time favorite by them. I lost interest in them soon after this point. As with most bands that last this long, it got too repetitive for me.
Andy Wallace is an incredible sound engineer...Reign/South/Seasons are probably the most sonically perfect thrash albums released during the genre's '80s/early '90s heyday. It's really sad that these bands sounded BETTER 20-30 years ago with LESS advanced technology. What the fuck happened? Albums like Death Magnetic and World Painted Blood, while solid musically, sound thin and compressed, and the drums sound like cardboard boxes.
Ah memories, Check my South of Heaven cover and SOD riffs I first heard before and after commercial breaks on HeadBanger's Ball..Dead Skin Mask and Season's covers coming soon!
Yeah! i was there too, [guess it was in the Felt Forum right?].Great show and the opening act was misplace thinking 'bout so many good choices back then [overkill, testament, exodus, vio-lence etc.]
he was a Fan OF Metal & had many Friends in Metal Bands. He cut his hair which shows the move the same way the crowd does, so did kerry king. and many Other Musicians. Riki just didn't play an instrument, I know many people that also didn't play But they were fans of Heavy Metal.
@crgeiger498909 That was Ricky Rachtman. He was heavily involved in the hard rock/metal scene before he even got the Headbangers ball gig. He owned the Cathouse which Gun's N Roses, and many other bands played before they got big. He wasn't manufactured. Many people didn't like him, but he was legit.
Man I miss Headbangers ball I don't know how many times I waited patiently at the Fagen Pharmacy in the locked case to get a new tape from some band that I heard on Headbangers ball and now you can't do that
