It's an air-force emergency sleeping bag packed on a military jet. It is probably intended for use by pilots who are never going to be the size of that Russian.

My grandpa had one of those when he was in the army. It was a Navy item so they could make use of the space on a ship. "His brother gave it to him." Later the air force used them in bombers as part of the survival kit. . You only open it half way so you can lite a fire in the tin. It keeps the fire low profile. they are rare as most of the surplus was opened and used for basic training in the 70's and 80's Pretty cool!!!
No research done, but my guess is they sealed them in those cans to make it easier to ship the equipment. It looks a lot better sitting in the warehouse too instead of tri-walls filled with current bags.

Pretty handy to stash for a survival setup, and you now also have a shallow pan for boiling water/cooking, and the top for frying or use as sheet metal
I've had one of those bags for 33 years. I paid $80.00 for it from a surplus store. It wasn't in the can still but it was in the plastic when I bought it. It's still together and holding up.
Sharon Elam , back then the military put everything in cans. Food, ammo, clothing, medicine, those cans were watertight and could survive being dropped out of a helicopter or plane. Also the cans kept everything in neat squares for easy storage and stacking.
That's very interesting, would like to see other things that where put in cans back then and opened to see if it stayed useable today like the sleeping bag. Although it looks like the can was starting to rust. Thanks
