As someone who lives in Hong Kong this game was an ultimatum for us. We never had this big of a mainstream recognition and they pulled everything off from map, language to atmosphere immaculately
Technically speaking, The Watch Dogs games are sequels in a way. Edit: Sleeping Dogs has hacking mini games, therefore implying that there's a relationship with Watch Dogs themes.
I feel sorry for the people that didnt get to play it in its heyday. It still holds up great but at the time, it was immaculate. I think Charlie even briefly mentions it, but at the time these graphics were INSANE and it just elevated the whole experience so much more than can be described. This is one of the best open world games, up there with the big boys like GTA, Infamous, and Saints Row. Its too bad the marketing for it fell apart and left it as just a cult classic.
The art direction they took on for Hong Kong really moved it forward and made the city stand out. Definitely ahead of it's time and I would put this over any GTA honestly.
exactly, when i was younger i used to love watching my brother play video games which led to my love for them, sleeping dogs was one of the first video games that got me into playing games purely for it's graphics, it's story, it's characters etc. it will forever be the most nostalgic video game for me
@@TheItalianFun when you say , a game where you shoot criminals and fight gang members and drive cars recklessly and beat up people , what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Gta , then maybe saints row. Shit even watch dogs. It’s underrated , millions of copies doesn’t mean shit
@@triton1060 If I remember correctly the game was actually set to have a multiplayer sequel but it was never completed. Would've been really cool if it came out with the same love and care that Sleeping Dogs did.
For real. This game is one of my favorites of all time. The movement and combat is awesome. Kung fu gta is honestly the perfect way to put it too. Great game, also hope theres a sequel
The DLC is fucking peak I remember getting a car and unpacking a rifle from the trunk and just going to town in those respawning gang encounters it was awesome
@@TheCopyNinja733 It was developed by UFG which did go under but the game was published and also partly produced by Square Enix, technically the rights to the IP would go to them after United Front went bankrupt
I didnt understand why people didnt like this game, technically speaking sleeping dog is a GTA but it is directed by john woo, while the GTA is directed by michael bay
It is an underrated game The company lost millions of dollars because they didn't make a net profit from this game It failed to meet sales expectations. The game only sold 1.5 million copies, despite a positive reception from critics and gamers alike. Its poor sales caused Square Enix to lose millions of dollars and cancel any future sequels.
Actually I did saw a video on the subject and they tried to do a GTA online style game named Triad wars which was a F2P dumpster fire on the same map. Instead of making a sequel. Square thought to copy GTA yet again and it flopped hard and both were scrapped.
@@sdcrocks don’t know what this “shenmue” but it’s true , these companies just don’t care about making quality products any more , just getting the money first then maybe making it decent afterwards. Look at cyber punk , no man’s sky , halo infinite , gta online, assassins creed.
This game had the best environmental moves, they had cliffs, the ability to throw people into trunks of cars, etc. very fun sandbox game. Slow mo bullet time, most fun car pitting and overall the epitome of the golden age of gaming.
Ahh, back when buying from a AAA game-studio got you a fully fleshed-out game with a unique concept, and practically 0 glitches. Edit: Damn I just looked up other games released in 2012, and I forgot how great it was to be a gamer then. We got CS:GO, Borderlands 2, Hitman Absolution, Forza Horizon 1, Dishonored, The Walking Dead (which I didn't like but from what I saw most people loved it, so props where they're due), and a few other bangers.
@@vipture. 2012 was a golden year . imo. max payne 3, far cry 3, sleeping dogs, blops2 ,dishonored, borderlands 2,diablo 3, guild wars 2, ac3, hotline miami, xcom.... like I CANT FUCKING STOP COUNTING...
This is probably the most underrated open world game out there. The fighting feels so fucking smooth and rewarding. Great story aswell. Btw 12:33 ,this mechanic is also in State of Decay 1/2
This game is so underrated basically because "GTA clone" and while the open world isn't as fun to explore (budget must have been less than half of GTA so duh) it manages to tell a much more compelling story with characters that actually behave like human beings.
@@LORDdrPepper GTA is excellent entertainment with fun characters and dialogue, but in terms of plot and character development it's kind of ass. Which is totally fine by the way, GTA knows exactly what it wants to be. I'm just saying Sleeping Dogs offers something different, but was largely ignored because people mistook it for a cheap copy paste job.
@@punu3675 *npc. People like guy without a moustache and others are literally oblivion npc’s. They never add anything to the video, it’s just a race to be the first to comment.
Fun gameplay and intriguing story, really all you need for a great game. And of course, Pork Buns. A man who has never eaten a pork bun is never a whole man.
Thug: “What the fuck are you doing?” Charlie: “Wdym wtf am I doing we’re criminals” Thug: *Yeah no kidding* Kinda sus that he replied right after Charlie’s statement kinda sus indeed
I remember in this games’ hospital, you could throw civilians into the chairs and they would glitch and go flying and as a child, it sent me into tears lmao
Being thrown on the table and getting accused of being an undercover cop while wearing the SWAT outfit and still managing to talk your way out of it was a power move. This game is great.
This is one of the games that was seen as a GTA clone but they outperformed GTA in many aspects in reality. The game is incredible and deserved more, unfortunately we only got one game out of them, i still would love a sequel.
Another game that suffered from the GTA clone myth that NO one can be competitive to the open world crime genre is beyond the biggest gatekeeping in the history of gaming.
The Cantonese in game is great too. If you were an American Cantonese speaker this game was amazing. First ever actual game that you saw someone who looked like you and connected at an almost familial level since your parents and pretty much extended family could only speak Cantonese. Cultural master piece
@@orang1921 part of the immersion. It’s almost like in some alternate universe this could’ve happened to you, or someone close to you. @@orang1921Gotta have an uncultured hater ruining the vibe. It's kinda like when the Irish get cool characters or the Greek. I'm Indigenous and throughly enjoyed playing Gun and Red Dead Revolver, it's cool to see something familiar on the screen. Also gets people interested in different cultures.

One of my all time favorite videos from Charlie was his “Sleeping Dogs Error” video in which he couldn’t progress through the game after playing karaoke. Glad to see he resolved the error, only took him nine years to do so!
this game literally should’ve got a sequel. it was fucking amazing man, the storyline, everything about it felt perfect im not sure why it didn’t get a sequel though..
it was considered a commerical failure, it didn't meet sales expectations and United Front Games (the dev studio) went under a few years after Sleeping Dogs released. There actually were plans for a sequel at one point, but it was scrapped.
You know, being born in Hong Kong and growing up on HK cinema, this game has a place in my heart. It’s cool to see Charlie playing the game and giving it a bit of exposure after all these years.
This was the first game that made me feel connected with the characters to the point where after the wedding mission I was beating every bad guy and screaming “For Winston!”
@@MrJbfool I felt like Winston’s death was just as tragic as Penny’s, after playing the game again recently, I was more hurt by penny’s death because she knew who Winston was but was the most innocent out of everyone there. I was hoping they would remaster the game but from the looks of it, that may not ever happen 🥲
@@emiljones3007 Penny's car dialogue in the Bride shopping mission was so well acted and felt like she generally cared about Winston and Wei. It felt so organic and heart felt that when the wedding happens and you see them both dying it really goes to show how normal people get caught up in a life of crime. Such a great story and a shame we can't get a sequel.
I will never forget how I basically 100% this game and kept playing the club fights over and over. This game not having a sequel is such a disappointment
@@Tobbit yeah many good games stopped and were switched out by others, like dice forgot battlefront and went to battlefield 2042, transformers devastation unfortunately, many more
@@rileymachelle4088 i think it stopped being a true crime game the moment square enix got to publish the game without owning the true crime franchise. not sure what happened in-between that stopped activision from publishing it to releasing it as true crime hong kong
Bro wtf I did not expect this, no cap sleeping dogs is probably one of my favourite games of all time. Basically gta if it was in Hong Kong and a badass protagonist. Replayed this game so many times on ps3, wish square Enix would make a sequel or another game set in its universe.
I absolutely love the casting of this game as well. The main actor is an Asian American Actor who hardly speaks any Chinese if any, like how the character grew up in America most of his life, but every single other Chinese will have spoken it at some point. Really adds to how foreign Wei is in all of this even though he's returning home. Also the Legendary man himself James Hong is the classic dad/grandad type character in a special way, its awesome.
and ofc Tom Wilkinson played Pendrew. I knew the second I recognised his voice that he would turn out to be a bad person because I watched Rush Hour for the first time around the time I played this game LMFAO
@@AdnanMohammed-lt8qq And GTA takes place in America youre point? They're taking about Yakuza the game series , where instead of shooting people like GTA you fight like in sleeping dogs , so this game is like a combo of GTA with the Yakuza games
I remember the wedding. At that moment of the game i was genuinely invested, i really cared about everyone and I fought with all my heart... what a game.
The storytelling of this game is just one of the best. And yes, the writer WANTS you to care about the people at the wedding, so the mission will tear your heart out. And they did a fantastic job.
@@chucklenuts2294 Yeah and i kept jumping onto people's cars to make it feel like a CGI fest movie, but i hate the fact that the cops can get lost easily and ruin the vibe.
Back when developers were focusing on how great a game would be rather than a quick profit. We have gone backwards. Honestly the graphics weren’t that bad either I still play game like these
It came out in 2012 though. Practically the start of the current industry. Online only Diablo, Mass Effect 3, Prototype 2 and Resident Evil 6 just completely ignoring what people liked about what made people like the game. SFxT having ON DISC DAY ONE dlc. And such.
That’s weird. I had the sudden urge to play this game last week and I’m almost at the end. Feels like a lot of people have been revisiting this game recently, which is well deserved. This really is a great game that deserved a sequel
The cutscenes, voice acting, animations, and story are some of the best writing and acting that I have ever scene. It is beautiful and terrifying, as it should be.
This game has the best combat system ever. It’s so satisfying to beat people up rather than shoot them and unlike GTA that it’s compared to a lot, it doesn’t make you rely solely on guns, it’s very much possible to do a good majority of the main story without needing a gun from the start. Plus the story was so good, I hear a lot that it’s like the true crime games but when I had that game I was too young for it to leave a lasting impression on me. I do remember that we had True Crime New York though, I see the case all the time. I really want to play it now and make comparisons
This is the crossover I never thought i’d see. But damn its a blessing. Nothing more i’ve wanted in this world than a Sleeping Dogs sequel. Hopefully Square Enix sell the rights to it for more shit coings that lose value the moment it touches their hands 😂
Me and my friend still always saying "go to bed wei" cause there was a point where I was doing side missions for so long the main mission was "go to bed" for like 3 days lmfao
i beat sleeping dogs so many times and never got tired of it. even when there was nothing to do, i would just drive around the cities, fight the cops, replay missions, find collectibles, purchase everything in the game, i'd always find something to do. definitely one of my top five games and probably the game i've played the most. it's very special and close to my heart.
I beat this when it came out on PC. I'd love to play the definitive edition on ps5, but its 1080 30fps.. pretty bad. Needs a 4k60 patch or at least 60fps.
@@majora919 have you ever played a console before? Console ports are lucky if they get an enhanced frame rate option, some developers still don’t understand this.
This game was amazing from start to finish. Playing both sides, the drama, action, twists, action, characters, content, DRIP, aesthetic. Such an amazing game. Absolutely deserves more love and attention from those who don't know about it
"Texas has no internet apparently" *Literally one of the first places with Google Fiber* Charlie's foray into the real world beyond his Floridian suburb is always a whirl
I can't tell you how many time I have begged my friends to give this game a chance only for it to be repeatedly wrote it off as "just GTA in China." Glad to see this game is at least getting a well-deserved cult following years later if a sequel is out of the cards.

This game is criminally underrated it should have won game of the year when it dropped, full transparency idk what it launched agaisnt, its crazy how well this gake holds up. Has one of the best stories in all of gaming in my opinion, the visuals are amazing for its time and still hopd up pretty well, characters are unique and rememberable, the voice acting is amazing, combat is a masterpiece, the driving can be hit or miss but its i find kyself enjoying it quite a bit, the free running is underused but very fluid and nice, the platinum is a challenge but not overbearing, and the city is absolutely amazing the city truly feels alive most open world gamed fapl flat on that and the open world feels like a hub between missions a good example of this is the mafia games thos worlds never felt alive to me hut hong kong feels alive and its absolutely beautiful. This gake will forever be in my top ten games of all time.
dude. the story in Sleeping Dogs is so unbelievably good. like i remember playing this game and being so engrossed in the characters that at some points i got emotional. this game is an instant classic
This game is my favourite of all time, the combat is so fun and the story is funny. Also I scare my brother with the scene where the guy gets turned to food. It deserves a sequel.
This has aged like fine wine with the game having a great story, aesthetically pleasing world, animations, VA, gameplay, and music. It definitely needs a sequel to finish off the story.
I legit think that this game is perfect. Not in the sense that it’s flawless and functions without error, but in that it combines the shooting, driving, and story of a great crime genre game, while also being a kickass action brawler. I have bought this game 4 times, and played each time to completion, along with the DLCs. I am very sad that we haven’t gotten a sequel to this.
Its almost as if back in the day developers wanted to create a fully in tact content rich game. Shame now says most are wither devoid of content or stuffed with mindless gruel
This game is indeed thoroughly recommended. The atmosphere is great and the place really feels alive, the graphics still hold up and the story is great. Away from the main missions its a bit meh, but whatever
I played this game in the first grade and I’m 16 years old with every edition of the game, a platinum trophy, and still replay it a couple times of year. A true classic. My favorite game. I cried the first time I saw Jackie you know what, and I do every time still.
Guess it finally took Charlie years to progress past the legendary Sleeping Dogs Error video on the Xbox 360. Good on him, I really liked this game too!
getting a basics of combat tutorial in the mid-early game is really fitting when its your first visit back to a dojo you gotta refresh yourself on the basics and make sure your fundamentals are intact they probably didnt think that deeply on it but I like to pretend they did
the only "bad" thing about it was the tacked on "romance" or love interests also a lack of things to do in the open world. but it was generally excellent. they really should have made a sequel
I believe that the romance aspect is intentional because it shows that Wei wasn't able to commit in a relationship going after all of the messed up stuff he's gone through
I played Sleeping Dogs recently and fucking loved, I can’t believe I slept on it’s initial release because these open world sandbox games are one of my favourite genre
@A J Same. I feel that it could have more story, side stories and other random activities, to have even more life to the map. But instead, we had a full ton of DLCs (some quite substantial and other were simple things)
i remember playing this when i was super young because my dad mistakenly bought it for me thinking it was "watch dogs" and I still played the fuck out of it, got stuck on the sumo steam room boss for 2 days but then finally completed it.
This was one of my favorite open world games ever. When I realized you could defeat the gang members by just getting in a car and mowing them down in the parking lot I laughed for like 10 minutes straight.
Since I was in high school, every year, I make time to play through this game front to back. I absolutely adore this game. Top 3 fav games of all time.
I revisited this game recently and the funniest glitch i experienced is i jumped super high in the air and it kept spawning oranges. Glitches aside this game is awesome and when i first played it my mom made me return it cuz i was relatively young but i still remember great memories.
This game brings back so many memories for me in a good way. Besides the main missions, The amount of side missions you could do in this game blew my mind. I couldn't finish the game because my computer's hard drive doesn't work anymore but it still has quite a lot of missions.
I've been waiting for people to realize how good of a GTA clone this ACTUALLY turned out to be. And the DLC on the island is some of the best I've ever seen in a game franchise no cap.
