Charlie ruthlessly shooting a man in the back of the head and then pestering his partner for witnessing something so awful and clamming up is so fucking funny
I'm actually really sick right now with a bruised collar bone and it aches in agony over how hard I'm laughing at that scene. I can't tell if the tears are from pain or laughter anymore.
11:54 The absolute comedy of watching Charlie get into a car under the banner reading, "Keep L.A. Safe. Drive Safely", casually cross off something in the notebook, and then immediately make a 90 degree turn directly into another car
This was hands down one of the best releases back in 2011, I remember I would go back and forth with Gears 3, MW3, Skyrim, Dark Souls and this game. Those were the days, nostalgia hittin me hard rn.
@@mrfootfxtish9430 depends on the videos you look at, there are way more overused and even worse comments than this one. like referencing to a part of a video and stating exactly what happened.
I love how Charlie tells Bekowsky that hes going to "show him a thing or two he learned at the LAPD" cos its a small attention to detail thing that Bekowsky is actually super salty / jealous that you were promoted suuuper fast while he took years, so it comes off like Cole is just rubbing it in, especially since this is Coles FIRST case as a detective lol
"Am I not supposed to shoot him in the back of the head?! Isn't that LAPD standard procedure?" 😂😂😂. I really appreciate Charlie's sense of humor and satire sometimes.
Comment section: “highly underrated game. Underrated game so good. So underrated glad it’s getting attention it deserves.” LA Noire: has always had highly rated, enthusiastic reviews, sold nearly 5 million copies. Everybody has at least heard of it and it’s rare to hear anything really bad about it. Highly underrated!
@@gleam6370 that doesn’t mean it’s underrated though right? selling 5 million copies definitely isn’t a flop even if it wasn’t how much the studio wanted it to sell
Bro Rockstar was on a roll back in the day they had a streak going on with RDR1, L.A. Noire and then GTA 5 right after. This game is still one of my favourites it needs a sequel.
I think that given its time, the face mo-caps are still impressive. Too bad we probably won't be getting a sequel or something with a similar style to this game from Rockstar or Team Bondi.
I'd actually like to see a similar game set in the same universe as red dead. Instead of playing an outlaw you play as a lawman tracking down the outlaws. Think it would be pretty cool
@@coreycasciano3255 I think GMTK actually made a great video on detective games and why it's so difficult to make them. I would definitely love to play some though. I think LA Noire is a great game, but I think the mechanics can still be improved on
LA noire was a game that didn't even need the sandbox it had along with it. It could have stood up on its own with the investigations and stories segments. Cole was written as a flawed, unlikable protagonist. I thought that was pretty fresh at the time
I think it's weird to call him unlikeable. Like yeah he was flawed, but he was absolutely the good guy for most of the story and especially at the end. It was a story of someone who was arrogant and messed up really bad, then spent the rest of his life trying to make up for it. He sabotaged himself along the way because he couldn't share his pain with his wife. I really do not think he was close to unlikeable.
@@Wveth ...especially at the end? Like, the part where you actually find out what he *was* responsible for in the war? Now personally as a civilian I have no right to judge him nor do I; but I'm willing to bet that if you ask 10 veterans about whether someone who behaved in the way that he did under fire is or ever could be "likeable," you will not likely get ten homogeneous answers. If anything he strikes me as less and less likeable throughout the storyline, although his redeeming quality is what appears to be a genuine and heartfelt dedication to some kind of atonement, which is something most people with any semblance of empathy generally respect on at least some level - at least, when it's actually acted on, which I think it's fair to say it certainly was in Cole's case (especially considering the other major thing which happens with him at the end, which I assume is what you're talking about, and does of course obviously make him more likeable) Although a lot of that has to do with the flashbacks/newspapers, so I suppose it's fair to say that Cole is really more and more likeable as time goes on *in the story,* but the player experiences someone who is at once becoming more likeable at the same time as he's becoming less likeable mostly (though not exclusively) for things that technically happened in *his* past.
Looks like the developers used the majority of their budgets on the facial mocap in this game. Still incredible to this day. Wish more devs would do this. Makes a huge difference in immersion
I imagine the mocap was what made the game size so massive and what made it take up 3 entire discs. Idk why but the multiple discs really emphasized how much work they put into it to me haha
@MetalHead4ever i believe mocap has became more cheaper these days than it was before, considering movies and AAA video games has been using this tech alot more than it used to.
Phelps is a very complex protagonist a walking contradiction like us, like an actual character with feelings and goals, hands down one of the best characters in gaming.
The reason the faces look "so good" is because they actually used facial tracking and 3D scanning of real people's faces to create the characters and facial animations... I remember looking at it before the game came out like "wow, that's so cool!" lol
I thought the random affair Cole has with that actress near the end was really outta place and then he just dies. I didn't find the ending to be worthwhile, kinda felt like I got to the end just for the sake of getting to the end
This was one of the only games my father played all the way through, and I remember it being one of the funnest experiences I’ve had with him. One time he bounced a guy off his hood because the game glitched.
This game is still legendary. I know Team Bondi had so much mismanagement of overworking its employees but my god, the final result. It still looks good 10 years later. The acting, the writing, the locations, the connection to real cases, the tech behind this game was sooo damn good. In fact, it was too good. And because the game just barely broke even, game studios never have been this ambitious since it was too much of a risk of going under. And it is an extreme shame
@@Theoss-sl1fk It might not just be Take 2. Unfortunately, Rockstar really doesn't even need to make games anymore :( Red dead online and Gta online must make so much money for them that they have no need to invest time and money into another game, which honestly fucking sucks
I think another thing I should note is that this came out on the PS3. What I'm saying is that it doesn't matter how much better the PS5 gets or what game consoles arrive in the future, if game studios aren't even willing to achieve goals like whatTeam Bondi did in 2011, what's the point of getting a PS5.
@@Maxmulham That's a very fair point. The number of truly great AAA games has decreased a lot in recent years. I think a reason for that is the corporatization of the video game industry, where developers are forced to speedrun making games and skip polishing it, causing terrible products like battlefield 2042. But there are a few studios that seem to consistently push the boundaries and make great games, like Arkane Studios and Rocksteady. However, it seems a lot of the most popular games in recent years were made by indie devs, and that's where the future of gaming lies at the moment.
First time i played this game when it was released. I was just blown away how realistic those facial animations are like it was definitely the first of its kind to use that kind of realism to games
I finished this game the other day and I’m literally in love with it. I really wish rockstar would make more releases for this series. There are not nearly enough
13:05 So I got curious about this. Tennessee vs Garner was decided in 1985. TN v Garner was the famous civil case where it was decided that a police officer cannot shoot a fleeing, unarmed suspect unless there is cause to believe the suspect would create a serious, immediate threat of injury or death to those around him. So Charlie was probably right that his actions were standard procedure in the 40s. If anyone has old standard regulations for LAPD in the 40's I'd love to see them.
If anyone watching this gameplay enjoyed it, you have to check-out OG Funhaus' "Idiot Detective" series. One of the funniest LA Noire gameplays I've ever seen.
Wow, I just started playing this game again last week and was thinking to myself how great it would be if Charlie were to play it on stream. I spent about an hour running over Roy with my car and laughing my head off lol
28:03 It’s not as prevalent as failing to keep eye contact, but a common tell that someone’s lying is that slight head shake. Like they’re hearing what they said and subconsciously going “wait, that’s not right.”
Fun fact! The Interrogation system's options were changed VERY late in Development, which is why Cole looks like he loses his mind out of nowhere during some interactions. They were originally "Coax/Force/Accuse" instead of "Truth/Lie/Doubt", which I feel more correctly reflects what Aaron Staton (his actor) is _actually_ doing and saying.
Just played la noire for the first time a few months ago. And while I never finished it, how far did get into the game makes me think that yes, LA noire is in fact, a masterpiece...
The facial animations are honestly better than 99% of the games now, they are pretty stunning still to this day. Thats…. Pretty bad, considering how old this game is.
I get where you’re coming from bc it still looks insanely good but you’re mistaken. It’s not “facial animations” per se. they fully scanned the actor’s heads. You can see behind the scenes footage demonstrating this tech. No game has ever used this tech before and probably never will. It’s highly expensive and time consuming. Don’t forget that this game was announced all the way back in 2004
Easily one of my most favorite video games ever. The story telling and the detective work was done so well. I really liked Cole’s controversy with us and the public in the game. The atmosphere was relaxing and nostalgic. 100/10
