My wife died of cancer on June 21, 1993 (the longest day of the year in all senses), leaving me to raise our 5 year old son. This movie came out 4 days later. Needless to say, I didn't watch it in theaters, but did see it some time later. Our son turned out great. He's a chemical engineer and project manager working for Pfizer now, and I have 4 grandchildren.

While "You've Got Mail" is my favorite of the Nora Ephron-Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks collabs (and you need to see it!), I do very much enjoy this movie. All the music they pick, Hanks's subplot of moving on from the death of his wife, the rare featuring of Baltimore (where I went to college, so I've actually been to a couple of those shooting locations! ), the iconic lines. Just the discussion of falling in love in real life versus falling in love in a movie, while the movie itself gives us both is so smart, and I think Ephron really captures the way people talk. "God, I love that movie."
@kw7378a1

Why You've got mail? Hanks plays such a dick in that movie. Meg Ryan is charming always but can't believe they got together at the end after everything he did in that one.
@kateorgera5907

@@kw7378a1 I mean, fair. I guess the way I saw it, (SPOILERS) he acts that way in public because that's how he was raised - look at his father and grandfather! They were much bigger dicks than him! But you see in his emails with Shopgirl the more introspective side of him - he doesn't like when he becomes Mr. Nasty. And it takes falling in love with Shopgirl, and then Kathleen, to realize he doesn't want to be that person anymore. As for Kathleen's side of things, I think she was attracted to Joe before she found out he was Joe Fox. And I think she recognized the part she played in antagonizing Joe Fox and idealizing NY152 by the end, to come to a better balance and see Joe as he is - flawed, but ultimately good. Also, I just love the drama of the secret identities. I think the scene in the cafe, where he knows and she doesn't, is so well done. Like I could spend an essay picking apart the levels of that scene, and I LOVE it. And I just love the aesthetic - 90s New York, the golden retriever, the bookstores. It speaks to me on a personal level, but I get that it doesn't speak to everyone.

@@kw7378a1 I don't know. It's a tough one - I'm not entirely sure if I could do it myself! (SPOILERS) The closing of the store was heartbreaking! I cry every time. But for Kathleen - and I've thought about this long and hard - it seems like she had doubts about her life, before the shop was threatened. As much as she wanted to keep the shop alive for her mom's memory, I don't know if it was really her dream. In the same way that her relationship with her journalist boyfriend looked good on paper but wasn't really what she needed, it might be the same for the store, hard as that is for her to admit. You see at the end she's finding a new direction by writing children's books, keeping what she learned from her mother alive while also making her own mark. But it's certainly a downer on an otherwise fascinating relationship and movie. Yet it also gives some hope - even when the worst thing that you think can happen happens, it's possible to keep going and find a new life for yourself. The real irony is that the real store the Shop Around the Corner was based on is still in business! While a lot of indie bookstores were shut down by chains like Barnes & Noble in the 90s, Books of Wonder actually survived that whole time and has a website and second location. That gives me comfort, lol.

"An Affair to Remember" with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr, and "The Dirty Dozen" with Lee Marvin and ... a lot :) The first is a classic Romance, and the second a classic Action/War. An Affair to Remember was a remake of a movie called Love Affair (1939) with Charles Boyer and Irene Dunne, and it was remade again in 1994 with Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. The '94 Love Affair was a huge flop, and the only memorable thing about it was that Katherine Hepburn, playing a tiny role but getting star billing, said the "f" word. It was her final role before she died.

"I need to watch a movie, I don't have time for an emotional crisis." No joke, that line could be straight out of a classic rom-com from the era. People like to bag on Walter, and I can understand why but let's give him some credit. The woman he loves, wants to marry and spend the rest of his life with, breaks up with him AND tells him she's in love with another man who she must go to be with RIGHT NOW DURING DINNER. And what does he do? He doesn't make a fuss. He lets her go because when you love someone you want whats best for them. Maybe I'm a sap for losers but I thought Walter did a pretty amazing thing there.

That's true love right there. I think Walter will be OK. His type are almost always OK. A lot of people look down on them for it but they tend to end up being with good people in the end. Ashleigh. Two things: First, "Tiramisu" is an Italian dessert containing coffee and marsala-soaked sponge covered in mascarpone cream. It was extremely popular in the 80s among middle class diners. I watched them eating it with my nose pressed to the glass. Second, Sam's friend Jay is played by Rob Reiner, the son of Carl Reiner who directed The Jerk. Rob Reiner became a director in his own right and helmed classics that you've now seen, like Misery and When Harry Met Sally. Other Reiner-directed classic films totally worth your time are Stand By Me, The Princess Bride, A Few Good Men, and This is Spinal Tap. BTW, Sleepless in Seattle was directed by Nora Ephron who wrote the screenplay for When Harry Met Sally. Ephron directed Rob Reiner in a Christmas film called Mixed Nuts, which is completely berserk and lacks cohesion but I love it and recommend it for that time of the year. P.S. Kids can be so cruel. Great reaction video. Certain scenes break me up too. It’s fine, we can remember the past and people in our lives with just one simple cue. I just about lost it once when I was rummaging through antique door hardware in a store and suddenly came upon an old glass door knob. I suddenly had a flashback memory of reaching UP to grasp an identical glass doorknob on the bedroom door at my Grandma’s house. I was probably only 3 or 4 years old to be so short to reach up for that door knob. And, there I was, back at Grandma’s house, as a toddler. And, of course Grandma was right there with me… yeah, one little memory like that and it all comes flooding back. Trust me, we don’t forget them. It’s all in there.

The woman trying to explain An Affair to Remember is Rita Wilson, Tom Hanks actual wife. The war movie reaction was adlibbed which is why Rita looked confused. The kids playing the record backwards and saying" it says Paul is dead " comes from the myth that the Beatles Paul McCartney died in the mid 60s while the Beatles were at there peak and replaced with a" fake " Paul McCartney, fans would then look for proof he had died and look for clues in there music and album art . There are supposedly a bunch of clues the band had replaced Paul and were " trolling" the fans with clues , all which turned out to be debunked of course. Hope that explains the scene ....

This was the first of two films Hanks had in 1993. It came out in the summer and it was a huge hit. He then went on to have Philadelphia in the fall, which would win him his first of two consecutive Best Actor Oscars. The next year he would win for Forrest Gump. This was kind of Hanks' last film before he was known as a serious actor. Though he had been nominated for Big a few years before, that was sort of seen as a one-off fluke. He was pretty much considered a comedian with films like Splash, Bachelor Party, The Money Pit, Dragnet, The 'Burbs, Turner & Hooch, and Joe vs. The Volcano.

Supposedly John says “I bury Paul” during the fade at the end of “Strawberry Fields”. It was actually “cranberry sauce” which makes even less sense. The license plate on the Beetle on the Abbey Road album cover included “28IF” which supposedly meant he would be 28 if he had survived the crash. There were dozens of clues. Early '90s movie. My sister actually won tickets from the radio station KISN 97 (w/ Fisher & Todd) to the sneak preview and I got to go with. I actually caught a t-shirt w/ the movie title on it (white t-shirt w/ red lettering) that the radio station was tossing out to the audience. It hung nearly to my knees! Wore that shirt for yrs until it got too holey to wear, even just @ home. Lots of bigger names, incl Tom Hanks' real-life wife (Rita), Victor Garber (Titanic as the ship's engineer, I think it was; the popular TV series Alias; & the '99 or so Annie remake), Niles Crane was the character from Frasier, Bill Pulman (hope you watch Whille You Were Sleeping this month & Independence Day around the Fourth, 2 more of his movies), Noah's friend was in My Girl (w/ McCauley Calkin from Home Alone, although I don't think I've actually ever seen (all of) it). Don't know if you noticed it, but this movie clearly shows how it USED to be before 9-11 happened. While Airplane! biefly showed it (in a largely comedic way, & I can't remember which of your other reviews showed it, this movie is how I wish it still was. Sit down, watch the planes park, people disembarking, greeting people just after getting off the ramp, sometimes seeing them while still inside the ramp...watching planes take off. Hello Ashleigh Your hair (sincerely) is looking just as good as Meg Ryan's in this film. The repeated references to "An Affair to Remember" are to help put in to context the differences between how men and women viewed romance and relationships. It is also meant to establish that Annie (Meg) and Sam (Tom) are meant to be together, MFEO. It cutely shows how "magic" or "kismet" or the forces of the universe go about bringing them together. The white hair guy in the airport that you recognized is Victor Garber. He is well known for ALIAS with Jennifer Gardner and various movies among them: Titanic, Legally Blonde, and Argo. The woman he is married to is Rita Wilson (Tom Hanks real wife). The scene in the kitchen when Rita is giving a quick synopsis of "An Affair to Remember", it is the exposition to bot explain the plot of the film but also to establish shy women find it so emotionally moving. The response by the men (Tom and Victor) is meant to be both a little sarcastic, but also the diametric (opposing) view on what 'manly-men' find emotionally moving, the tragic death of soldiers.)))) If you have enough money, the Empire State Building can be made to light up as you choose. However, it normally will light up differently for different holidays or events in NYC or nationally, such as Breast Cancer Month. Again another great review. It is a repeated favorite to watch just before Valentines Day. It in capsulates the holidays from Thanksgiving to Val Day. Yes Bill Pullman (Walter) was the Sherriff in 'Lake Placid'. He is also the adorable lead in "While You were Sleeping" with Sandra Bullock. It is a MUST-SEE for next JingleBeans. He was also Lonestar in "Spaceballs" which you didn't like too much even if it was a Mel Brooks film.

Audrey Hepburn was in "Breakfast atTiffanies," and "Always." The movie they talk about in this movie, is "An Affair to Remember," with Carey Grant and Deborah Kerr. You won't have seen, "You've Got Mail," either.

I always say that as brilliant as Meg Ryan was with Billy Crystal in When Harry Met Sally, her true professional soul mate is Tom Hanks. These two are just perfection whenever they're onscreen and it's a massive shame they only did a few movies together although they remain close friends in real life. They were the Tracy and Hepburn of the 90s (but they never got together in real life, they aren't like that...and besides he's been married to Rita Wilson since 1988. She plays his character's sister in this). The movie they're watching is An Affair to Remember, which, no spoilers, plays into the finale of this film. Anyway, Happy Valentine's Day to you and Blake. I'd be willing to bet that it was that smile of yours that hooked him.

I hope you check out Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline in French Kiss. It would be a perfect Valentine's movie! Also Kate & Leopold with Meg Ryan and Hugh Jackman.

Absolutely! Both those movies are terrific and too often overlooked. And I'm a normal war/action/scifi movie guy. ...It's probably just because Meg Ryan is INSANELY adorable.

Bill Pullman, yeah he was in Lake Placid. He's also Lone Starr in Spaceballs. He's also in Newsies and Independence Day, which are both good movies themselves.

You absolutely have to see City of Angels. Meg Ryan is amazing and I know you will LOVE it. I don't want to spoil anything about the film but you keep mentioning things that are in that movie without knowing and every time you do it I scream at my screen "watch City of Angels!"

Met Meg Ryan while she was with Anthony Edwards while they were filming "Top Gun". They filmed some scenes on our ship. She was so sweet and friendly. I had no clue who she was at the time. Someone said she was in a soap opera. It was also before Tom Cruise went off the deep end. He was cool then. I helped the crew move things off the ship their last night filming. I was then invited to a party they threw on base. This is where I got to meet these people. They were all so nice and down to earth.

Old school Hanks was the best. Turner and Hooch, Philadelphia, The Money Pit, Big, The Burbs, and A League of Their Own were all gems. Also recommend that you watch them as well, if you haven't already!

So lovely that they don't even meet until the very last scene of the movie, and then it's up to the viewer to decide what happens next. (and it's 90's btw)

Sleepless in Seattle wasn’t an 80s movie, Ashley. Came out in 1993. The year before Tom Hanks made Forrest Gump.

Your last comment about there not really being any movies centered around a talk radio show made me think of one of my old favorites.1994's "Straight Talk" was a wonderful example of this plot device and stars Dolly Parton. It's a RomCom too.

Or the Oliver Stone movie, "Talk Radio" (1988) which is definitely not a romcom!

Totally different kind of movie, but The Fisher King (starring Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams) was another 90s movie involving talk radio. And David Hyde Pierce, who had a small role in Sleepless in Seattle, also had a small role in Fisher King.

"You're gonna have stalkers show up." Well, you're not wrong. If this was a different kind of movie, Meg's character would be pretty creepy.
