Sliders of Ghost Town: Origins (2016)
In 1973 the Halloween industry would be changed forever When Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, CA, hosted their very first Halloween Haunt event. Many years later, employees of the park known as "Street Monsters" developed a new scare tactic that involved sliding great distances across concrete asphalt in order to surprise and scare the guests of the event. In this film you will hear the stories of the Street Monsters who invented or who refined this skill into what it is today and also see what it takes to be a Street Monster at this event.

I hope this video find its way into the RU-vid algorithm because it deserves the attention. I came across this documentary from a random Instagram reel of sliding. I thought it was another silly trend, but luckily I came across a comment that recommended this.

Oh, dear lord! I can't believe there is a picture of Todd in the steak costume with us at 50:50! I have never laughed so hard as I did that night- all of us chasing him through the crowd as his little feet stuck out the bottom of the costume, moving in a flash, as he ran from us screaming! That was a great night! Thank you for the pictures, the stories, and the memories. Camile

This makes me miss sliding so much. I loved making the gear and the slider practice made for some fun moments.

I helped a high school with a haunt, they wanted a few people to scare and entertain the people who would wait in line. This haunt had a surprising turn out. I had practiced sliding and such the year before(never works scary farm myself) and what Michael said about the 1000 squats is accurate. I had never been so sore in my life. The fronts of my thighs were on fire. The most pain from the type of soreness I've ever had. Even doing nothing, just sitting or laying in bed, I'd just get these twinges and sharp muscle pains(not cramps) and it was awful, and was like that for days. It's such hard work. And at that time, I was roller blading and skateboarding often, so I wasn't in bad shape. But that constant up and down, and bending the knees, leaning back, doing that squatting walk thing. You HAVE to do it often, or else, yeah, you won't be able to walk for a week.

Wow! I've been going to the Haunts since the very first one and I remember a lot of these guys (by their costumes I mean). They may not have realized it but they were "famous," in terms of their costumes, among the attendees from early on; back then the majority of their outfits still had the Western theme so we identified them by names like, Indian ghoul guy, Indian werewolf, big cowboy monster, and one of the most well known, the pig lady; and I remember that green goblin mask guy. It was far different back then - - the "monsters" were really into it and "interacted" with the guests more and virtually everyone that worked there was dressed up in some way; they would "stick" to victims longer, talk to them, pose with them, and generally do little impromptu things to entertain them more. It was still a ghost town theme park back then and all these roller-coaster rides didn't exist so it looked more like a haunted town. The "Haunted Shack" was still there and the calico train and log ride were the big attractions and were really made up (a far cry from now where they don't even do anything with them). They looked cool when you were in them but after developing the photos I took, you could see how cheap and cheesy the decorations actually were. They used a lot of green lights and black lights to make things look eerie and we would always look at the luminous hand-stamp they used to stamp our hands with when we entered. They also used to put a lot of creativity into making the Maps each year, including glow in the dark ones, I have kept them as souvenirs every year (although now they are so cheap they aren't really cool anymore). These early guys, in my opinion, were way more into entertaining the guests than the current crop and it's true that the Hanging pre-show was often as entertaining as the show itself; They use to split the crowd into two sides and pit them against each other in cheering competitions - - that was always fun. And a couple of times, in the middle of the street over by the big general store, I came upon some impromptu "slider competitions" - - the crowd gathered around as they did sliding stunts, like a break-dancing competition, in front of the cheering crowd, each one trying to outdo the other. I guess they didn't really have a lot of rules and regulations for the monsters back then because they could actually touch you, but I guess they quickly put a stop to that and also forbade guests from touching the monsters (I guess to prevent legal problems and possible assaults). I'm glad to see someone gave a spotlight to these unheralded pioneers of the Haunt who really helped shape the Haunt into what it became in its glory days as a "Halloween Haunt" and not just a "Scary Farm." They have taken a back seat now as the corporations have made the mazes the big draw but back then these guys were a main attraction.

Sliders and unique chainsaw actors (the GOOD ones) easily have the most physically exhausting, demanding and brutal jobs within the business. As someone who works at the biggest haunt in New England in a multi-role, and act 2 nights a week for only 2-4 hours in a custom role that is a mix of a chainsaw/marionette/semi-stunt actor... I believe that if you’re not innovating, flushing fear/doubt away and pushing yourself - you can’t be surprised when the day arrives that you’re replaced with an electronic prop. With myself, instead of sliding, I do dives (that are meant to look like I’m barreling into things, flipping over and continuing to per-sue guests - chainsaw still running. ) My area is probably the length of half a football field, and typically I need to control the entire area - and occasionally have support from one person. I take pride in pushing myself to my absolute limit each time. And each time, I’m usually absolutely toast for the remainder of the week. And I’m 5’11, 235lbs and certainly not young. Each night I’m covered in bruises, cuts, scrapes and more. I likely sprint the length of 50 football fields a night, crash into fences/bushes a dozen times, go over a railing hip first a dozen times and do a tripping/keep running gag a dozen times as well. Not to mention the screaming that needs to be heard over a loud chainsaw, and various voice pitch distortions - plus probably 200+ pulls on the chainsaw pull chord. But regardless of the toll it takes… Hearing/seeing the reactions from those who are terrified, to those who applaud I’m amazement… To those who have already experienced you and return to take a picture with you, or show their friends… It’s all worth it. Especially when haunts are losing their magic, raw innovation is passed into special effects and scares have been boiled down to nothing but jump scares/gore. People need to keep innovating. Keep reaching for new heights, and to never be afraid to try something new. Take old and overkilled roles, and breath new life into them. Fearlessness is the only thing that can create fear in others.

The 3rd guy on 1:16, when he was talking about his first time going to Knott's scary fest, I thought I heard him say he "I drugged all of my friends" but I listened one more time and I heard him "I dragged all my friends"

I think he said drug as the past tense of drag, although technically not grammatically correct.

I’ve been sliding for 4-5 years at local haunts & the 13th floor & people will always complement me to the staff & people will tell me that I am talented & should work at Knotts. It’s my DREAM!! I always talk to my parents about it & they laugh n tell me that I need to relax.
