People ignorantly assume bands like Slipknot is angry music for angry people. Total Opposite. We're letting the music be mad for us, its therapy. You feel like you got some shit out of your system when you're you're done listening, and you feel calmer.
as a listener and knowing every lyric to every Slipknot song I 100% agree with you but realistically in that time of 1999 it was angry music for angry people and can be seen that way very easily

Slipknot has bounce and the vocal performance always hits, it has a punk rebellious energy with respectable rap delivery. As an old-school rap head, they are one of the bands that really hit along with Korn. LP as well.
@@PonKabrutii remember the first time i discovered that after leaving the last track to play to restart the album but fell asleep. Then was awoken to chaos lol
It's really cool to see people experiencing this album for the first time as this album was the first album that really got me into music. I remember seeing the cover in a GradeAUnderA video and turning on Spit It Out. It really threw me for a loop and didn't really like it but, the morning after I decided to relisten and then that's when it clicked. That was early 6th grade and now I'm in my senior year of high school, crazy how time flies. I still absolutely love this album and you should totally check out their second project Iowa. It's hyper aggressive and a super impressive record, one of my all time favorites.
Pure facts bro. Endless blast beats and typical death metal screams/growls just dont compare to the raw emotion and realness here. And knowing about the dark history of many of the band members who really werent doing well mentally during this period confirms it.
@@dualistic6916 That’s why I always say that early 2000’s Metal just hit different. Anybody can write about war, demons, politics, gore, and satirical violence. These bands were talking about everyday bullshit we all go through. It was angry, honest, and relatable and a lot of the times had a positive message to it. It takes a lot of courage to put your heart on your sleeve like that. The New Wave of American Metal (this is what it was called when I was in highschool) is by far my favorite era.
@@claudegibson7650 To be fair, I think most people point to the later Slipknot albums to make that claim, I've never heard anyone saying the first 2 albums aren't "real metal"
@@Fairindejol lol you say that like I have no idea what death metal is. Name me one death metal band that wrote a song with the unhinged chaotic emotion like scissors, or prosthetics. I’ve seen Morbid Angel twice and Cannibal Corpse 3 times. Great shows and great bands but neither had the intensity of a Slipknot concert.
the producer said something about if Corey threw up a few times during recording, then you knew that it went well. Says a lot about the vocal style of Corey at this time
If you dig the mixing of electronic samples and heavy metal/hardcore definitely check out Vein - Errorzone. They're a more modern hardcore version of this style and they do it so well.
I know you considered scissors to be “trash” but, there’s an extremely dark story behind it if you do some research if you feel like it. it’s their darkest song imo. for example, the lyrics “biding my time until the time is right” is talking about the right time to take his own life- that being extremely dark. scissors overall has a dark but interesting message!
another thing to add is the vocalist’s (corey taylor) hysterical screams, which are just considered to be him releasing anger or trauma. that’s essentially what scissors is, a release of traumatic experiences. corey had a very dark past, as well as the other members of the band- and they perfectly incorporate it into their music. that’s what i love about them:)
For this reason, Scissors and Iowa (the song) are my favourites. If I ever really need to let out a lot of pent up anger I'll throw one of them on and scream along.
The fact you recognise Tattered and Torn amongst the incredible quality of the entire album, gives you an upvote. Looking forward to your IOWA reaction next
Been a long time since I visited this album. So glad I did with someone listening for the first time that has an open ear! One thing to remember about metal is, songs about beef aren't always necessarily about a specific person but just the expression of those emotions and songs about criminal or horror matter are often just the telling of a tale. Artistic expression is a wide spectrum. Thanks for making my work night pass 😂 I am an old school metal head who enjoyed live, the birth of thrash and many other genres of metal over the years and as an old head, still enjoy many styles. I now enjoy watching younger folks dive in to the madness 😂
they are from the Nu metal genre, which is metal mixed with genres like hiphop, rap, grundge and industrial. I recommend bands like Korn, Limp Bizkit, Linkin park etc. Btw the Band Korn started it all.
@@gfunk9329they were defined as nu metal, nu metal is very different thru a lot of bands, so of course slipknot is very different from bands like limp bizkit or system cause they take a lot of elements from death metal with rap and groove
When I heard this album in 1999 I instantly went from being into euro dance music to being a metal head. I’m not too keen on Slipknots more recent albums but can’t stop listening to this, I still haven’t heard anything that matches this insane energy.
Me too ...1999 started year 7 .....I think the album means more to people who heard it as kids / teenagers now than people today just listening to another nu metal band from 2000s
I owe this album so fucking much, it openend a whole new world for me. Took me like about 10 listens to fully grasp it and im still exploring extreme music after all these years
Same the hardest I listened to was linkin park then one of my high school best friends showed me before I forget and it instantly clicked. Now my first tatoo was the s logo and I'm preparing a playlist for my daughter
Ah man, this one doesn’t have Purity on it. Purity is my all time favorite Slipknot song. He wrote it about a little girl who was kidnapped and buried alive. It was based on a true story until they found out just after putting the album out that it was made up. But even so, this type of thing happens and he wanted to bring awareness to it. If you ever get the chance… do a reaction to the song called Purity, you won’t be disappointed… you will be depressed, yes, but it’s a great song.
@1:04:45 it was very clear that you genuinely like this shit and Im here for it. Yes im an hour in non stop. This has been a great reaction bro! Finishing it up and hoping for Iowa cause got damnnnnn will you be blown away by that as we all were when it released long ago. Cheers man 🤘🏼
Idk if someone else said it already, but the "Can't see California without Marlon Brando's eyes" line that sounds weird but works bc it's so intense, was something Corey Taylor the singer heard a homeless guy yelling in LA. Just a cool little fun fact.
Eyeless is my second favourite slipknot song after disasterpiece wich is on the Iowa album and that break down in Eyeless goes hard the fact it goes slow then gets slower and heavier its just a masterpiece
Slipknot 1999 you can tell it came out in the 90s and it's a bit front loaded at times but still great 8/10 Iowa 2001 brutal all the way through more of a listen to when your pissed album 6/10 (imo) Vol 3 2004 i enjoy experimental music and vol 3 was diverse 10/10 Ahig 2008 I did not like ahig the only 3 songs I listen too off of ahig is sulfur till we die and psychosocial 3/10 .5 the gray chapter 2014 it was okay but is overshadowed by wanyk but had some bangers like the devil and I and custer 6/10 Wanyk 2019 loved it all the way through especially nero forte 10/10 Tesf 2022 it was pretty meh imo I only liked the dying song and yen it's not the worst but it's not great 5/10
Slipknot concerts are fucking insane bro. A song starts and the whole fucking crowd starts moshing instantly. And the crowd surfers start falling on your head and shit. It's awesome
44:05 he lost his good scream right at the end of making the 2nd album (Iowa.) he has the great scream, of all time in these first 2 albums. Then I’d probably go with Phil Anselmo from Pantera. Liberate is my 2nd favorite song on this album, but for some reason, Purity isn’t on this version and is imo the best song on this album.
When I was 13 I saved every dollar I could from my lunch money and then walked 45 mins to the cd store to buy this cd. It was absolutely worth it, and it spoke to my soul ❤
Noooo 😢 on the original version of the first album we had the song “purity” which is an amazing gem of a song but it was replaced with “me inside” for some legal bullshit. Find the song if you wanna hear it 🎉
totally agree with you about TATTERED AND TORN, it's a heavily underrated song, it is one my favourites, if not my all time favourite. you should check out "Tattered & Torn/ Frail Limb Nursery/ Purity" for the FULL uncut version! masterpiece.
You have good taste btw. No maggot will judge you for saying eyeless is the best song. And liking tattered and torn? Very Nice. Wait and Bleed was the main single that got the radio airplay
25:07 It really does. If you can stand listening to it, the endorphins hit HARD. Edit: Since you mentioned Tony Hawk Pro Skater, please react to some Busdriver.
The deluxe 10 year anniversary edition of this album has a few extra cuts that are really good. Great reaction, by the way. Always fun seeing people get into an artist I've loved for a long time.
@@mediumvillainThe interlude was uploaded on Spotify by a good samaritan. It doesn't flow super well because you hear Purity's starting drums at the end - so you're going to hear them twice if you listen to Purity right after - but at least it's here
you need to listen to frail limb nursery/purity (it's just one song) which is one of the best on this album but is not available on official media (purity is on the self-titled 10th anniversary album) for copyright reasons etc... and please keep reacting to slipknot, their second album iowa is going to be more insane than the self-titled
You talk about wanting to see them live or in studio. Fun fact their singer Corey Taylor was naked and cutting himself while recording their album after this IOWA. Arguably their best and heaviest album. I think its the heaviest album ever.
The vocalist, Corey Taylor, is probably one of the best modern vocalists. Not only metal, but any genre. He can pretty much do anything. His voice range is huge and he can go fast or slow. He is the epitome of a genius vocalist.
Energetic music with passion like this is what they dont want to be mainstream so they stigmatize it. Thats why low energy depressed music is mainstream. You got A LOT of good metal to catchup on. Its endless.
I think Scissors was an artistic release for Corey. In an interview he said that he was sexually ab**ed as child so that could have something do with the strangeness of the song.
Listen on ur own time or on the next Slipknot reaction, but there's a song that got cut out from this album a while back called Purity and I'd say its one of the best songs in the album. U will love it 100%, u GOTTA hear it
I remember the first time I listened to scissors it lowkey scared the shit outta me lmao like it felt unsettling but in a very intriguing way. that psychotic second half of the song for sure threw me off the first couple times but now its one of my favorites and is definitely one of slipknots more special tracks imo.
