Hi Catherine, I made your Sloppy Joes this evening and they came out fantastic. I had to laugh because my husband said, no more Sloppy Joes out of a can. Honestly, simple but very delicious.
That handy-dandy tool that you used to scoop up your diced pepper & onion is called a *bench scraper*. When I was a baker for Panera Bread, a bench scraper was used constantly to “scrape” raw dough from the butcher block “bench” table & to make slits in a lot of the pastries. I LOVE using one in my own kitchen!😊
I used to make sloppy joes with just hamburger relish onion ketchup and mustard. Was so tasty we ate that at least once a week. My husband taught me that recipe when we first got married.
Me, too Randy! Matter of fact, as a hangover from my Dr Atkins days (guess y'all know how old I am now) I eat them open face, twice the meat, twice the fun, at half the bun.
Hey Catherine, it stills cracks me up how similar our cooking styles and recipes are. I make my own sloppy joes but call them Momwiches. Your recipe sounds and looks delicious! Your homegrown pepper looks awesome! Yummmm👍🏽♥️katie
Thanks Katie. I love pulling peppers off my plants. Last year we hardly had any, this year we have lots. I love that we have similar recipe styles, that’s cool. I learned a lot as a kid from my mom. 😊💖
Grated carrots give it an awesome flavor, the sweetness enhances. My granny did that during the Depression to stretch food further. She also used barbeque sauce in hers!
I usually use Manwich Original with lean ground beef and doctor it up with chopped green pepper, onion, and diced fresh garlic cloves (about 3 medium cloves). My husband and I are not fans of ketchup and I don't like mustard of any kind. Sometimes I will use a McCormicks Sloppy Joe mix packet (this is very rare because of the sodium content of those mixes). I don't toast my buns. We love tater tots!!!!
Wow! I just made this for supper and was looking for a reminder of what I used back when I was 16! That was nearly 4 decades ago! I've made them since but wasnt sure if I was remembering everything! I DID!! Happy 4th!
I haven't had a sloppy joe in a long long time. I grew up having fresh garden veggies. My parents had a garden and a concord grape vine which Momma canned some jam and jelly and other family members had gardens and fruit trees, my brother had a black walnut tree so we ate good. Fresh is better than store bought anyday.
Brings back memories of years ago. Just how Mom made them. Yum! 😋 please take this as a compliment, but I love the way you say ya’ll. My son in law was born and raised in Texas, but he moved to Iowa when he and my daughter got married, so I hear ya’ll a lot and love it. Save me a sloppy joe!! 🍔
I lived in Mississippi during my school days and picked up “ya’ll” there. I’ve been in Texas now for over 20 years so I still say it. Haha. I don’t even realize I’m saying it. Hope you had a great weekend. 😊
Takes me back to my childhood too! My Dad especially loved these. LOL I use Dijon Mustard in mine, and a dash of vinegar and smokey paprika to give it a real BBQ sauce flavour. These looked great. I could smell your beautiful pepper from the garden
My sister still sends me hand picked apples from home and when my kids tasted them they were shocked how much better they tasted. Apples were not their favorite fruit until they tasted those. So thats great you grow your own vegies.👍😊
I like to add celery to my sloppy joes. For some reason I thought everybody did that. Then I had one at someone's house and it just tasted like something was missing... That was it. (I put it in late so it's still got just a tiny bit of crunch to it, yum. Sometimes the onion too, and I chop them both a little larger so you know when you're biting into them.)
I love Sloppy Joes.. I used to make them for the kids using PIta Pocket bread halves instead of buns so that it wouldnt drip quite so much on their shirts lol.. That's a practice we still do and yup... with Tater Tots! My son always sprinkled his Sloppy Joe with grated Parm.. Such great memories.. now my mouth is watering for these! Guess whats for dinner? haha. Thanks!
I do my Sloppy Joe like you Cathrine and toast the buns. My kids loved putting alittle mayo on bottom bun, then meat and one slice of Kraft cheese,Lol Homemade fries,Mmmmm mmmm😊
Hey Catherine!! Wow.. those Sloppy joes look divine!!! Love the angle you used when filming some of the video!! Like that side view!! We think Worcestershire sauce is always a nice added touch to meats.... We love to use it when making turkey burgers, or meatloafs!! Crisping up the bun is definitely key!!! Absolutely a flavorful and tasty looking recipe! Thank you for sharing and we hope you have a great weekend!! Lots of love to you!!
These look amazing, will make your version. When my kids were young, to stretch the meat I added a small can of pork and beans …drained. Now sometimes for just the two of us, After browning the meat I add BBQ sauce and a small can of drained pork and beans very simple! Or maybe just lazy! 😂
When my sloppy Joe's are thickened I put them on the bun , top w/a slice of cheese add the top of the bun & place in oven (350 degress) & toast for 5-7 minutes.
I love grilled buns for sloppy joes and burgers and most everything! I never butter the bun or bread though, I use a stick of butter on the hot griddle or skillet and rub it in circles for each piece of bun or bread(grilled cheese, yum) put the bun down and turn it a time or two and grill to the perfect golden brown! It’s lots easier to control the amount of butter used that way! Love your recipes! Made Taco Mac and cheese the other day and my family didn’t leave any leftovers! To clarify, I turn the bun in circles on the hot surface, not turn it over(unless I want to for a grilled sandwich) Adding, I bet those sloppy joes would be delicious to stuff a baked potato with. Now I don’t know which to do first! DECISIONS 😱
I like Sloppy Joes. I usually make mine with seasonings and simple but like onions and peppers. I've started toasting my buns to help not get soggy or break. Looks good. I like simple meals on the weekend.
Sometimes I make the Sloppy Joe mixture, pile it on half the bun, put them on a sheet pan, throw a piece of American cheese on each one and put them under the broiler for about 5 to 6 minutes and serve them opened faced.
Hi! It's Linda, I like jalapeños, onion, fresh garlic, bbq sauce and ketchup. Just enough of the two, so they are like yours not too much sauce. Try it, it's good!
We also like the manwich my son puts cheese in the bun as well Gonna make some this way Also made some bread pudding wow so impressed Thanks for sharing xxx
Now this is a sloppy joe recipe that appeals to me. Green peppers is one of my most favorite vegetables. So this is a must for me. Knowing myself, I never keep to a recipe, so I'll probably jazz it up a bit, like using some bacon, some hot pepper flakes and probably some cheese. I can't wait to try it out!
I peel the onion exactly like you do:) It is here soon lunch time and as I was watching your video I was already thinking if I had all the ingredients . Delicious they look your Slopy Joe's.Btw your hair looks great. Thank you for the video. Happy day everyone
We love sloppy Joes and those look great; I use bbq sauce instead of ketchup sometimes just for an extra little kick! Tatortots sound good rn too I gotta get some lunch ha
Hey Catherine, I was looking at your blog and it says to use 1tsp minced garlic. It doesn't mention garlic powder or the Worcestershire sauce. How much Worcestershire do you use and how much garlic powder? Your recipe looks sooo good. I can almost taste it now.
I got it from amazon, but the don't show any in stock. I just purchased another pan that is similar, here is the link if you would like to check it out. amzn.to/3gq7GbY The red pan was a Simply Ming Elite Hammered Ceramic Nonstick Stovetop Oven
