Mike you really have a good eye for working dirt with your machines. That side hill you cut in with the mini-ex and skid steer turned out just awesome. Keep the great content coming. We appreciate the hard work that must be involved making all these videos.

Archie is SUCH a smart dog that he’s helping you clear the orange line by biting off the residual stuff. What a GOOD doggie you have. I wish I could have them again but I just don’t have the time to train them.

Good morning all! Your woodyard is taking shape! Hey, on my 10-acre honey locust and Osage orange clearing project - I may have found the optimum solution! There’s a local manufacturing company that makes a skid steer attachment tree saw with 36” blade, 3/4” thick with carbide teeth. It can cut trees off just below ground level, solving the root grinding issue too. And the best part? Just about our nearest neighbor has one with a track skid steer! He got it to clear fence rows on his place. We’ll take a look at the equipment and the project when I go to the farm in July and see if he can say how much a couple of days of work would cost me. He said it burns fuel at about the same rate as a similar-size tractor - only 5-6 gph, so I’d hope it’s not too pricey. Doing it way for a couple of days (especially if I can line up another track skid steer with grapple to move downed trees out of the way) would be the equivalent of several weeks of manual cutting and I’d still have to deal with stumps if I went that way. Does anyone in the OWTM world have experience with this kind of tool?
@ecutler6261
@ecutler6261 2 года назад
The Honey Locusts are bad about regrowing if you don't remove the roots. I used my mini excavator to remove them. Don't have any experience with the Osage Orange here in Tennessee. Hope this helps, good luck on your project.
@dustinlantow7138
@dustinlantow7138 2 года назад
You still have to put tordon on the stumps then come back and foliar spray regrowth every 2 or 3 years or it will come back worse than ever here in eastern Kansas. The only tree we have that you can cut and kill without chemical is Eastern red cedar.

This project is pure gold in my opinion. We never miss an episode of Outdoors with the Morgans. Especially like to watch you play in the dirt . . . growing up in the 40's, the most fun you could have was sliding down the wet dirt on the river bank or digging in the sand gully between the house and the railroad tracks.. We agree, you are goooood!!! Best Wishes from California. My husband turned 83 last week.

It did not turn out right. He said he would fix it. Because the depth of the soil increases, the length of the slope must also increase, to maintain the same angle. I think he would admit to a miscalculation. A straight line at the bottom would be best along with a curved line at the top. Do you recognize the situation that I recognize?
@jakebredthauer5100
@jakebredthauer5100 2 года назад
At 22:05 she said the dog recognized what he recognized, that an adjustment was needed. Sometimes it is easier to make an adjustment than it is to have engineered the project to start with.

Mike, I recall you talking to a stone delivery driver, over at neighbour Cliff's place. He said his brand new truck could haul 23 tons at a time. It occurs to me that when the time comes for the stone on this new roadway, a bulk buying surely must work out cheaper and easier, now that you have the skid loader fully operational.....Cheers Robin....

Idk about where he’s at but where I am 80% of rock prices is the delivery charge, so I guess it would depend on how far he has to go wether it would be cheaper/worth having the larger loads delivered.

Nice work on the SLOPE, Team. Its always good to see earth moving efforts measured out. Too many people just shoot from the hip, make it up with their dozer blade or excavator bucket as they go along. Excellent results. Curiously enough, the more slope work you do, the better you will get at it.

Greg from northern Michigan. Mike, I see a heavy equipment outdoor wash rack with concrete pad in your near future. Dig one shared trench under the gravel road from the pole barn to the lower wood yard area for electrical power for outdoor lights / air compressor / recharging porrtable tools, a water line and outdoor hydrant for washing equipment and fire control, and a low voltage underground cable in oversized plastic conduit for phone / security cameras. Some food for thought.

A great example where weight is partly the key to the usefulness of of your equipment. The skid steer is both mini bulldozer and steam roller combined in one. I think where a lot of people fail at running grade is they give up too soon. 1st time doing and teaching oneself isn't easy and in Chris's words from Letsdig18 " Ya got to work it till its its done" you wont wear out the ground, the machine will wear out 1st. I've seen him work in a tract long after I would have stopped. So ya Mike, you're looking really good there, time to haul in a few loads of topsoil before you wind up removing the entire hill-top.

Last week the winds were howling. 50 MPH. there was a fire 2 miles NW of our house and of course the winds were out of the NW. It was on the N side of US16 and fire crews were able to keep it from crossing the highway. 111 acres burned and it is a fairly populated area. Yet not. a single structure was involved thanks to the efforts of our outstanding woodland fire crews. Fire is our biggest concern as this is Semi Arid and we are in a drought. We do what we can to minimize risk by keeping the fuel load down around the house and limbing up trees to eliminate "Ladder Fuel" that would let a ground fire climb into the trees and start a "Crown" fire. We were prepared to evacuate if needed but it was never an issue for us.
