Slovakia #13 Jews in Slovakia

One of my favorite topics, Jewish history - and Slovakia has a lot of it and complicated, both the old and the new; orthodoxy, assimilation or something in-between? Plus, the unavoidable issue - Second World War and the Holocaust. So, there are going to be villains, but mostly heroes; there is going to be a camp, but also beautiful synagogues; there is going to be death, but mostly we will talk about life! And... there are going to be rabbis, but mostly... athletes!!

Thank you very much for making this very informative video . I only recently discovered my Great-grandfather was born in a town only 2mi from Trnava in 1851. It was fascinating to see sights that he may have seen. This video was very well put together and extremely interesting.

I love it when my little creation rings a personal bell in somebody else's family tree😉

the history of Jews isn`t taught at all in Slovak schools. I did`t know most of the info in this video and my own grandmother was Jewish. I only know that she, a teenager during the war, ran away and got separated from her parents somewhere in central Slovakia and she was hiding in a forest from soldiers. I don`t know if she identified as Jewish but in retrospect I think she really didn`t want to advertise it, so my father and his brother were raised without any jewish traditions. Also sometimes when we would go to a town my mother would say `this whole street used to belong to the Jews`. Like in Lucenec, where I went to high school, half the town were Jews, but after they `didn`t come back` people hapilly took over the `abandoned` houses. Later the communist tore them all down and build panel apartment buildings in their place. My parents say that a lot of Slovaks want to pretend that they didn`t have anything to do with what happened to the Jews, but at the very least they silently stood by and waited for their own neightbour to be deported so they could grab their property.

What can I say... a very common issue all around Central-Eastern Europe. And still so controversial... I kinda assume automatically that people who watch my videos, even if they disagree with something, will comment in a civilized way; but, with this topic... I am sensing a storm soon. I hope You have thick skin, so to speak, as things may get ugly:) In advance, especially anybody who feels like saying that Jews were getting rich on others, blabla - watch "Obchod na Korze", I think it portrays a number of issues very well. Also, in advance - if everything goes well, I will visit other countries in the future and open their closets to look for their hidden skeletons, to put it metaphorically. I don't pick on any particular group. I am not racist - I hate people equally;)

Glad to hear he escaped! I've visited a number of camps already, but it doesn't get any less horrific...

apropo sinagogues. I lived in Lucenec for some time and there is a big beautiful sinagogue that was in ruins for a very long time until they found investors to renovate it maybe 10 years ago. I think they use it for concerts and such

Slovakia was "part" of the Great Moravia. It did not have that much importance compared to the Czech Part.

Exquisite Synagogue, I hope there is an active one nearby?

Very few synagogues are active, the modern Jewish community lives mostly in Bratislava and Kosice, as far as I know...

in Trnava, there is no active synagogue. There are two synagogue buildings still standing in Trnava and you've seen both of them in the video. The Orthodox one is turned into a caffee you can see 5:28 and the Status Quo Ante one is an art gallery of Jan Koniarek you can see 9:57. Trnava is the administrative centre (capital) of the county also named Trnava and meanwhile there are multiple synagogue buildings still standing in the minor towns of Trnava county outside of the city of Trnava, none of them are being actively used for religious purposes. In total, there are 5 synagogues in Slovakia, that are still being used for Jewish religious purposes. One is in the capial Bratislava, an orthodox one, at the same time, its the only synagogue building still standing in the city. The other one is in the second largest city Košice, also an orthodox one, although apparently used only sporadically for religious purposes - it's also a gallery at the same time; there are 4 synagogue buildings still standing in the city, the other three are used as a cultural center, laboratory and cinema. The other ones are in the minor towns and not in major cities. For example in Bardejov (a town in the county of Prešov) is a Hevra Bikur synagogue; there are 3 synagogue bulildings still in the town, the other two are used as cultural center and a high school. The other one is in Nové Zámky (a town in the county of Nitra), it's an orthodox one, and also the only synagogue building still standing in the town. That's four all together and the fifth one I dont know whether it counts as an active one, is in Žilina, the capital of it's own county, an orthodox one that served religious purposes and I'm not sure if it still does but it serves as a Jewish cultural center. In Žilina, there is also another synagogue building serving other purpose
