The guys should've known to have the cameraman on the passenger side during the smoke show. Having him pan down to the tire that isn't spinning, was comical.

one wheel peel
@JW...-oj5iw
@JW...-oj5iw 4 года назад
Spinning wheels in place is just a stunt. Actually accelerating is the true test. My '56 Chevy 4dr sedan with a tired 327 and Borg Warner T-10 and DragFast shifter accounted for providing taillight views to quite a number of would-be street runners. Transmissions and rear gears have a lot to do with translating engine revs to forward thrust. After a while, I got tired of the oil burning and rocker arm issues and set the car aside for an engine refresh. Unfortunately, my budget wouldn't allow me to have the machine shop bring the old small block back to the beginning, so it sat for a few years and may have been fallow even longer if a creep and a drunk Mexican woman hadn't wrecked my '66 Riviera. I drove it for a while with a lot of the right front fender gone while I tried to come up with a way to get it fixed. I really wish I had the insight to know how much of a collector car it would become. Anyway, changing jobs brought me to the decision to revive the '56. Good body, but no engine or transmission. '66 Riviera wreck with a good engine and transmission. It was quite a chore to squeeze a 425 Buick nailhead engine and Turbo 400 transmission into a car that never heard of a big block engine. Admittedly, the workmanship was crude, but effective. During the Chevy's storage, a friend bought the wheels and tires from it, trading me his 14" factory wheels and tires from his Firebird. Once the car was running, the little tires were "toast". I created a number of volcanoes with them. It was spectacular, but meaningless. Small contact patches with massive torque applied instantaneously. I did that to them because they were scheduled to be replaced with as large of 14" tires as I could find. Since those cost money, I used a much more gentle application of throttle during acceleration. When I moved to a rural community, the '56 became an attraction. We had a few street racing outings and nothing could begin to compete. One guy had a potential car, but apparently it was all show. He would never participate, even though it was a '70 Chevelle SS 454 with a tunnel ram and dual Holleys. He never showed its performance, only slowly cruising the main road through town. Lots of guys tried to get him to run against my '56 jalopy, but he wouldn't take the bait. I guess he couldn't take the chance of losing to my turd. Anyway, I bought a truck up there and the '56 didn't get a lot of driving after that, but I lit it up now and then. One of the sons of the guy I worked for was old enough to drive and pretty responsible, so I asked him if he would drive the tub while I was away for vacation. He was more than happy to do so. I told him not to race it, knowing that he probably would anyway. When I got back, he brought the car to me at work. He had one of his friends with him and was trying to make the visit short. I took the key and looked him in the eye, asking, "you raced it, didn't you?" He kind of looked down and nodded. I grinned at him and told him I knew he would. When he realized he wasn't in trouble, I had him tell me about it. The challenger was a squirrel with a '65 El Camino running a stock 327 and, of all things, a 3 on the tree. I knew a car like that would be zero competition to my car. I asked how badly they beat the guy. The answer kind of upset me at first. He said they beat him by "over a car length". I was astounded that some goofball in a stocker with a column shift could stay in the same zip code, let alone stay close to the rear bumper. I told Charlie that the '56 should have done a lot better. That's when they revealed the rest of the story. In the beginning, they had him by "two football fields, so we stopped and waited for him to catch up." I still laugh when I think about it.

Years ago my grandfather had a '73 Buick Century. Loved the styling of that car and it sounded so awesome when running. Never got to legally drive it, too young, but just around the driveway. It had almost 200k miles when it was finally too rusted to pass inspection. You can never miss that pointed bumper. I wouldn't mind finding and fixing one up myself. Love your choice of color scheme. Wheels not keen on though.

The nice thing about those Oldsmobile console shifters, is how easily you can slide a used B&M Megashifter in place and not even be noticed if you put the stock round knob on. Another choice is a similar year Z-28 or Trans Am shifter...pull back to first, push the shifter over to the passenger, and its factory ratchet all thru 3 gears. As for the one-wheel peel, stick an air shock or bag in the rear coils and pump up the pressure to plant that tire. But I fully love a build like this--park it next to a row of red '69 Z/28's and '57 Chevies dripping in billet, and watch what car the real car guys cloud around. If you know your way around oddball cars and a junkyard, you can pull something together people haven't seen in a while, for about this price spread out over time.

Fellows, I often hear about people using soapy water and 4-ought steel wool to clean coatings off glass. That will work if you are very good. But a lot can be learned from doing dishes. Steel wool will cut glass cuz it's harder than glass. For cleaning baked on crud on Pyrex you should use a copper pad, like a ChoreBoy pad (they used to be called ChoreGirl pads until the fem movement objected). Copper never scratched my Pyrex but it still gets the crud off. Steel wool often will scratch it as evidenced by a duller surface.

color scheme looks like a 90s misfire, and the rims are 15 years ago....more rubber, solid, more subtle, mono color. It's a cool car, just my 2 pennies

15 years ago. Or around the time this build was done.

I would love that car in Candy Apple Blue Metallic/Silver color combo. With 18 in. Rims and tires. Nice build though.

On second thought, they have been heavily influenced by "two-tone Foose"!

On programs that feature performance cars like the stage 1 Buick shown here, have I ever seen one of the owners who knew how to powershift. And please don't tell me that they don't want to abuse their cars, because if that's their thinking, they should have just bought a picture of whatever they've bought!

I see the that the Stage 1 vs. Hemi shootout was featured here ~11:00. That race happened in Dec. '84 and was featured in the March 1985 Muscle Car Review . It was organized by MCR on the spur of the moment between two "little guy" enthusiasts. The Mopar guy had maligned and challenged the Buick GS in the Letters Column of the Nov. '84 issue of Muscle Car Review. The Buick GS Stage 1 was then driven to the track 125 mi. away and blew away TWO trailered Hemis that day. Just go to "Hot Rod Hemi Killer" to see the old video from 1984. That particular Stage 1 vs. Hemi race was the only one that really mattered. The other later ones were too orchestrated, "set up" and political in nature to be really relevant.
