What they did in clearing out these so called slums caused irreversible damage to their occupants. Folk who lived here were part of a vast community of people who were left in some considerable trauma at the loss of their local friends and neighbours, and the sudden destruction of their local shops. All that remained were golden memories of play streets filled with children at play, local shops which people knew and cherished. No consultation and no sense of understanding. All that now remains are some RU-vid videos of their treasured past. I know, I was there.

Ohh those horrible walkways in the sky. The planners destroyed the city just as much as the luftwaffe. Scotland Road and up in to Everton destroyed.

I DON'T KNOW HOW PRACTICAL MY IDEA IS BUT-- I'VE OFTEN WONDERED WHY THE LOCAL POWER'S NEVER REBUILT ON THE EXISTING STREET PLANS WHERE POSSIBLE, OBVIOUSLY CREATING LARGER BUT FEWER HOUSES IF / WHERE NECESSARY. THE AREA WOULD BE MOSTLY FAMILIAR FOR LOCALS, ONLY WITH BETTER FACILITIES AND GREEN AREAS. IN OTHER WORDS ,A COMPROMISE, KEEPING THE BEST AND FAMILIAR FEATURES OF THE OLD AND WITH THE NEW.

In Sheffield they knocked down loads of areas, but didn't replace the houses there, so the shops and pubs ended up dying off. New ones are there now, but too late for most of the businesses. Crap planning.

Slums yes but homes and communities for families like mine, I was never happier than when I was living in these slums....the city has died a slow death from then on

This is happening in the city of Baltimore Maryland USA, whole areas abandoned row homes, who decided what is a slum or not: the queen??!

Some of that 19th century terrace housing was appalling. The back of many of those streets had no windows, they just looked like huge brick walls. Sadly the city lost a lot of grandiose buildings that would have been preserved today. My mums house is under the hospital. But skerries rd and handfield street are still there for memory-lane trips but with the gentrification going on around the area not sure how much longer.

Likewise, Boundary place where my nan grew up was demolished to make way for the Royal. Those houses weren't as bad as the terraces and tenements you mention, though.

i think they could ve renovated and updated the houses so that they would be livable again, joining 2 or 3 living units ro make 1, inserting windows, creating more alleys, greenery, parks with trees and playgrounds in between, insulating walls etc....

In fairness, he was right about the motorway, unfinished and a daily traffic jam.

The film must date from the mid-1970s with Peter Shore (Labour) in power. Also, the Dobson St estate on Breck Road is shown as complete and that did not happen until 1973-4.

I think they should have knocked them down but then built slightly larger terraced houses with gardens at the rear in their place with a period appearance. Some of the living conditions were horrific in those houses

They were not all slums. Modernisation would have helped. The built slums in the sky to replace them. How long did they last. Wholesale vandalism.

The stupid Shankland plan was to have people elevated and cars at ground level. Oh and an inner motorway. The only part built and is the road in front of the Albert Dock running up to Parliament St. It should, be removed.

Hiya mate, I'm trying to cite this show for a thesis. Do you know if it was a special news report or where I can get any more details on it? Thank you for sharing, but if you have any more info on this I would be grateful. Cheers.

she's not actually that bad. she is aware of the (Big) faults in the new housing estates. The people in charge, obviously, never rectified them.

This is surely from the mid- late 1970's not the 60's. This was when Peter Shore was Environment Secretary. Note also the colour of the buses, a mixture of Liverpool Corporation and the new M.P.T.E. liveries; this change over was also happening at that time.

She spoke much common sense---but as usual, there wasn't enough money to replace such a HUGE area of dereliction at one go.

Dear Lord. Clearly we have the benefit of hindsight but the woman speaking at the end of this very interesting film appears to be from the planning school that wanted to plan the minutiae of people´s lives in an urban context - utter drivel borne out by years of consequent suffering and blight.
