Stephen King and Ser Harry Dresden have been my favorite palette cleansers this year. 34 books read and finishing it off with First Law. The single greatest year of reading I've ever had. And glad to have found booktube!

Yikes that's a lot of reading. I've only read 7(compared to 2 the year before)but had a bit of burnout and my epilepsy makes me struggle harder with concentration.🙂 I do read graphic novels too though👍

@stephentheshywarrior2759 oof that's a hard one, as 15 of my 34 books were King, and all of his best as well, but I wouldn't be able to decide between 11/22/63, The Shining, and Revival. Revival took me by surprise and had me riveted and the ending was pure madness

Thank you for this video, Mike! I can't say I've ever experienced a reading slump (knock on wood), but I think part of the reason might be the variety of reading that I do -- mixing up the genres, allowing in a quick and entertaining palette cleanser, including lots of non-fiction -- so I agree with your advice. Also, I don't chew bubble gum, let alone eat it. 😁

I tend to go toward Louis L'Amour because you know how the book turns out but sometimes there are some nuggets of great wordsmithing that makes you think. Then Sci-fi / thriller I turn toward Alien universe books or Ron Ripley.

Wow, I think this might actually be the very first time I’ve ever seen someone mention Louis L’Amour in the multiple years I’ve spent on booktube. My dad’s favorite growing up was Last of the Breed, and I remember he got me to read it as a teenager and I absolutely loved it. Really good stuff.

One of the ways I cope with it is to re-read an old favorite. I'm doing that now with Robert McCammon's "Swan Song." It's just as good as I remembered. "Ender's Game" is another I re-read every few years. I never get tired of it.

I find Discworld to be the perfect palate cleanser for the following reasons . 1) the genre is unique - generally one of its kind - light hearted nature of the books are greatly appreciated 2) continuity is not important in Discworld - all but two of the stories are self contained and can be read in any order meaning you can read discworld books In long lapses from one to the next.

I know you're a big fan of Star Wars eu, but I haven't seen anything about the Darth Bane trilogy on your channel. It surprises me a lot. It takes place in the Old Republic, but it's as close to a grimdark Star Wars series you can get. It is absolutely brutal, and the character development is wild.

I just hit a wall on reading. I kept picking up books (I’ve got a hundred TBR’s) and putting them down. Then I got the idea to grab the original Star Wars trilogy and it’s been perfect! I’m reading the Barnes and Noble leather bound book, a few chapters each night, and it’s a great winter read. All this to say your suggestions are spot on! I also think your top ten list all time is excellent. Thanks!

Currently reading WoT and you’re totally right. I’ve read five books in the last 18 months or so and I can’t imagine reading them all back to back. They’re good, but now old totally get burned out. Breaking it up with other books and other genres is key. Great video, thanks!! (And it’s kind funny that I think non D&D fans might enjoy the Drizzt books more. I always used Conan books as a slumpbuster, and not just the Robert E Howard stories, also the continuation of the series by L Sprague De Camp, Lin Carter, Robert Jordan to name a few. I must have over 30 Conan books. I really need to get some more I think. Discworld is also a great idea for standalone books that are a quick and highly enjoyable read. Comics are a great idea also and Mike if you like Garth Ennis then may I suggest you pick up his run on The Punisher, it is amazing, the best version of the character ever. Judge Dredd is also my current go to for comics. All his stories from 2000AD are collected in Casefiles that roughly have 300 pages each. There are many great epics from the Judge Dredd universe to be read. I do also read in many genres so don't often hit a slump.

Good thoughts! I'd recommend Sistah Samurai by Tatiana Obey (recommended by Nicholas Eames) as a palette cleanser. Nice short novella. Too short. The samurai stuff is great, the magic is fun and you'd love the family side. Agree on the YA. Redwall (21 books) is my lazy reading relief. Just pick one up every few months or whenever. Basically 21 standalones.

Glen Cook's Garrett Files books are great fun in fantasy. they read like Dresden as each can be read as a standalone, as each is a case but are more fun reading in order. Since I gave up on SF I've been reading a lot of older stuff, from Raymond Chandler to D E Stevenson. There's so much to read!
@lurchEbean

The Garrett PI series by Glen Cook is a good palette cleanser series. It’s a pulp detective story in a high fantasy setting (I think Cook even writes each book in the style of a different pulp detective author). It’s a lot of fun, and each book is basically a standalone (should still read them in order, but you don’t need to remember every last detail of the previous books).

Comedy is great for this. Discworld and Hitchiker's Guide are the obvious choices. As for going back and rereading something you love, one key point to realize is that you don't have to read the entire novel, but rather just a beloved section - as an example, I'm certain I've read the specific chapters of the way-back-ter'angreal in The Shadow Rising over 100 times, and the Moria section of Fellowship of the Ring close to that.

My method to avoid reading slumps is to switch between formats. I like to switch h from audio to digital to physical. I like to rotate through that and authors. I also read 2 or 3 at a time if I'm not feeling like jumping in that one I always have a backup book for rainy days. I 100% agree on the YA reading because I hated reading for a while but then I read Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson sequel series and simpler stories and it was exactly what helped me out ease back into reading something really simple and relaxing

Here's a peculiar way of breaking a reading slump. I mostly read in English, which is not my native langiage, so switching to a book or a few in my native language works for me really well.

I take a week or two off reading then I switch genre. If I read for example a long series I read (if applicable) the first trilogy or a few books in the series then I go to smaller or faster pace book. I do what you do fantasy paired with sci fi or horror and some historical books.

I would rather read 12 GREAT books a year than 50+ mediocre. Reading is supposed to be fun, not work. Less is more.

Manga for me has been like the best palette cleanser, it's so easy to fly through volumes and I feel like it just requires less brain power than reading a fantasy novel

Alsom there is nothing wrong in not reading for 2 or 3 months, do other things, and then get back to it! :)

I have burnout due to recent-ish fantasy disappointment. One after another after another.

The audio in this one has a constant buzzing (fairly certain it's not on my end), just thought you'd like to know.
